Cook: We're Signing Players That Might Have Appeared Out of Reach
Thursday, 29th Jul 2021 13:05

Town boss Paul Cook says the Blues are signing players that might have appeared out of reach for a League One club having made 10 additions already this summer.

Conor Chaplin was the 10th man to arrive at Portman Road on Tuesday, dropping a division from Championship Barnsley, following George Edmundson, who signed from Rangers having previously been the subject of bids from Championship sides including Peterborough and Millwall.

Joe Pigott and Scott Fraser were also understood to have been eyed by Championship clubs.

Town’s first summer signing, Wes Burns, was set to join Coventry on a free transfer until his former club Fleetwood took up an option on his contract, something they hadn’t been expected to do as it raised his wage.

The requirement for a fee priced the Sky Blues out of the deal and Town eventually fought off competition from two more Championship sides, Millwall and Hull City, to land the wideman.

“I can’t thank the board and [CEO] Mark Ashton enough because we are signing players that some might have thought were out of our reach,” Cook told the club site.

“We’ve kept our recruitment standards high this summer and the last two signings, with George and Conor coming in, are further evidence of that.”

The Blues' recruitment drive is far from over with areas of the squad still in need ot strengthening.

Middlesbrough's Hayden Coulson is expected to join on loan, his move to the Blues having been delayed by the lack of left-sided options at Boro at present.

Another central midfielder and a fourth senior central defenders are priorities.

We understand the Blues were approached by representatives of former England man Phil Jagielka enquiring whether they had an interest in the 38-year-old.

However, the former Sheffield United and Everton man is not currently under consideration.

Jagielka has been training and playing for Derby in pre-season despite their transfer embargo with manager Wayne Rooney having said he is keen to sign him once he is able to do so.

Meanwhile, Ipswich Borough Council has given the go-ahead for a 100-bedroom Travelodge hotel close to the Blues’ Portman Road ground on the land currently used as a car park between Suffolk County Council’s Endeavour House and the now-closed Better Gym.

A fantastic recruitment campaign so far and great to hear that more are coming. Downside is I guess we're gonna have to get used to that "Chequebook fc" taunt this year.

Can't thank the new owner's enough for splashing the cash as they promised to do so. I'm sure Paul Cook will get us out of this Div, but lets be patient. The only bad comment coming out of the Colchester match was the lousy streaming, though they did refund us back £5. Tomas Holy stay between the sticks lol.

The irony of the chequebook FC taunt though is that after losing 30odd squad members and the stupid wages some were supposed to be on I wouldn't mind betting even after these 10 signings the books are better than last season!!!!

Buzbyblue, I suspect you are spot on. The wages of Judge, Sears exskuse & captain Calamity would add up to several thousand a week.

You're right.

We've spent £500k on Harper and unknown amounts on Burns, Fraser, Chaplin, Hladky and Edmundson. If we assumed an average fee of £500k we are in the ball park of £3M spent.

We've got £1M in from the sale of Dozzell and offloaded about 15 senior pros, so we are about 5 senior wages in credit at the current time.

This is canny recruitment and good use of money. So refreshing to see after watching the sqaundering of our Premiership cash, and the initial Evans investment by useless managers.

The thinking looks like it is joined up from the Manager to the CEO to the Chariman and the owners. A strategy that we can actually see. Amazing.

With any luck we'll be able to score a few goals and win some football matches too.

Way back in the day other clubs took the P*** about our farming heritage, we responded by renaming ourselves Tractor Boys. It soon stopped and the TB era was born.

If people want to talk about cheque-books, we should get out ahead of it and start singing it ourselves.

"Cooks got a huge chequebook, in his hands,
Hes got another cup of coffee, in his hands,
We got the best CEO sitting in the stands,

Someone finish that off ive lost the plot :)

Finish it off with...

We've got Promotion in our hands.

Or:

We've got League One in our hands.

Or:

We've got the whole League in our hands.

Or stick with the original and simply end with:

We've got the whole world in our hands.

Bazza, I remember exactly what you mean about the Tractor Boy comment. We were playing Chelsea at home about 20 years ago. They were singing Tractor songs to us. We then scored against them and then they had 30,000 Ipswich fans shouting 'one nil to the Tractor Boys'. Chelsea didn't like the irony of going down one nil to a 'provincial' side like us. We took the sting out of their tail and owned the song/chant ourselves. Great days. I also remember that Jim Magilton wasn't too keen on it originally, but he got used to it. Jim was brilliant then. When he played for us first off he was on loan to us. He played so well for us that whenever he got the ball the whole North Stand used to shout 'Sheepshanks, get your chequebook out' towards the Directors box. Sure enough we bought him shortly after.
