Pillar Tribute to Legends
Thursday, 5th Aug 2021 17:06

The pillars in the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand’s lower concourse will bear tributes to 12 Blues legends for the first time at Saturday’s season opener against Morecambe.

In January 2000, almost 2,000 season ticket holders responded to the club’s request for votes on “icons, heroes, legends of the club [from] across the years” to be featured on the pillars.

John Wark topped the poll alongside Mick Mills, Terry Butcher, Kevin Beattie, Paul Mariner, George Burley, Frans Thijssen and Arnold Muhren from the FA and UEFA Cup-winning Sir Bobby Robson era, while Sir Alf Ramsey’s First and Second Division championship-winning team is represented by Ray Crawford with his strike partner Ted Phillips having finished just outside the top 12.

Matt Holland was second in the voting and Marcus Stewart and Jim Magilton, his colleagues in the team which was promoted in 1999/00 and then finished fifth in the Premier League the following season, are also in the 12.

Due to the pandemic the plans were put on hold but the 12 are now in place ahead of the opening fixture of the new season.

January 2020 not 2000.
Would have been a hell of a long wait! 😂
Great to see them doing this.

So glad l,m old enough to have watched all these great players. Will we ever see the likes of Wark, Mariner, Muhren, Beattie etc in the blue of this famous club ever again. Those really were the Days!!

Proper legends all of them to a man
And it would not be hard to find another dozen from those teams
Sadly none from the last 18 years
But hears hoping for some to arrive if and when we turn the illusive corner
There's certainly an opportunity for this new batch to make a name for themselves where the last lot couldn't
Onwards and upwards

As much as I think this is a great tribute to our greatest ever players I can't help thinking that those players are honored in so many different ways by the club and the supporters and that this was a missed opportunity to honor those who have given so much to the club over the year without the recognition that they deserve. Simon Milton, Pat Godbold, Trevor Kirton, Bryan Klug to name a few.... Such a shame on my eyes.

I know one thing for sure . This couldn't be replicated up the A140 - hence why we have the Three Stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ On our shirts …….and they don't !

COYBs let's get back to where we truly belong : in the top flight 👍
