Swansea City are reported to be the new frontrunners for Blues midfielder Flynn Downes.

As reported on Wednesday, AFC Bournemouth recently ended their significantly advanced interest in the 22-year-old, while Town turned down an offer from Peterborough earlier in the summer.

Now, according to the EADT, the Swans have made an approach for the former England U19 international, who has been training with the U23s having made it known he wants to depart this summer.

The Welshmen appointed former MK Dons boss Russell Martin as their new manager earlier in the week with ex-Town first-team coach Matt Gill as his assistant.

Town are likely to want a seven-figure fee for Brentwood-born Downes, who was the subject of rebuffed bids of £1.2 million and £1.6 million from Crystal Palace last summer.

Talented , physically strong , he is too often over- committed and lacking the mature judgement and timing which his other attributes ought to make an easier task . KernewekBlue added 20:26 - Aug 6 If it's clear he doesn't want to play a part in our new revolution, cash in and move on! £1M or thereabouts seems like good business for someone who is surplus to requirements, just going through the motions in training to pick up his wages. While he is undoubtedly talented, his progress here has stagnated to the point where he is of no consequence to us going forward. I'd wish him all the best and cash the cheque!

TimmyH added 11:12 - Aug 7 I personally like Downes (if his mind is right and wants to be here, who knows?)...would have liked the new faces to be built around him as the holding midfielder, if he goes it's a total clear out in midfield, almost unheard of in modern day or even back in the day football.
