Downes Fee Agreed With Swans - Report
Saturday, 7th Aug 2021 14:41

Swansea City and Town are reported to have agreed a fee for midfielder Flynn Downes.

News of the Swans’ interest in Downes emerged last night and now, according to Football Insider, the Blues have accepted a bid.

The Welshmen appointed former MK Dons boss Russell Martin as their new manager earlier in the week with ex-Town first-team coach Matt Gill as his assistant.

Downes has been training with the U23s since the start of pre-season having made it known he wants to move on. However, he wasn’t involved in their 6-1 friendly defeat of Bury Town this morning.

As reported on Wednesday, AFC Bournemouth recently ended their significantly advanced interest in the 22-year-old, while Town turned down an offer from Peterborough earlier in the summer.

Last summer, Town rebuffed bids of £1.2 million and £1.6 million from Crystal Palace, however, they’re likely to have had to accept a lower offer.

I'm sure he'll go and get the money he wants but the grass isn't always greener and I still think a convincing year in League One with us would've seen his stock rise higher than probably being a sub at Swansea.

£550,000 according to the Swansea independent last night. If true then that's rather low..

Good luck to him - I'm just glad this saga might finally be over.

Treated poorly by us... We should have let him join Palace anyway... 1 6million was reasonable especially as his alternative was playing under lambert... Cook never dealt with him properly, how can Nolan be an automatic first team choice despite being a worse player than downes and having previously banished for poit attitude. If downes has a great career it will be a scourge on cooks record. The same way Rhodes is on Keanes

We probably want 1 Million and they wanted to pay 550,000.

Possibly settled on 750,000 with add on's and a sell on clause. He is also off the wage bill

Not the best result but not a terrible one.

Shame but if he doesn't want to be here then best for all...have to say £550k is very little, the dutch fans I sat next to up in the Cobbold all rated him in the games they saw.

Eddie, Nolan is not an automatic starter, where did you get that impression? Downes' attitude wasn't the best kadt season after Town decided to keep him. He was under contract after all. I'm sure he'll ge very happy on Swanseas bench.

Skip... Nolan was automatically included in the first team squad from the start of pre season whereas downes was in the u 23 apparently due to attitude and application.... Who's attitude and application could be worse than Nolan and that's before we get onto ability

Eddie1985 unfortunately that's not cooks fault his heat was turned that was before he got here and he's had to put up with Downes now wanting to be here since he joined so it's best for Downes and the club he moves it's absolutely nothing like Keane getting rid of Rhodes as Rhodes didn't want to leave?? You need to do more research or support the club then out may understand the difference 🙄

Eddie nothing remotely similar to the Rhodes transfer, you are short of many facts to make that assumption!

Eddie1985. Are you monkeyblue in disguise? Always spouting rubbish. How has cook treated him badly? He inherited a player who doesnt want to be here after having his head turned by palace. And u are criticising the club bcse they turned down a bid that was way below our valuation? Are you for real? Had we accepted it no doubt ud have slagged the club off for letting him go on the cheap as we had with players in the past. He put him to train with the u23s ashe didnt want a player withvthe 1st team squad who doesnt want to be here. Downes, like the others put there had the chance to get himself back into the 1st team squad. Only Dobra has shown the will to do so. So no, Downes has been treated totally fairly. It was his choice. If hed wanted to stay he had that chance.

Quite apart from anything else we need the cash to get some defenders in. Nsiala and Edmundsen injured and Woolf in a day dream again. This is a s the priority

Im not saying Nolan is a better player than Downes but he scores more goals and has more assists. You could say Downes is a defensive midfielder but his lack of discipline when it gets physical often let's him down. So i think around half of million is about right for a player that flatters to deceive.

I think we will get this fee in instalments, Wilder mentioned on the EFL game that Swansea have lost parachute payments this season and are struggling big time with cash and resourcing players.
