Town Survey Fans on Tannoy
Monday, 9th Aug 2021 15:07

Town have asked for fans’ feedback on the Tannoy system at Portman Road with chairman Mike O’Leary having admitted that the club is going to have to almost start again with the PA system.

A number of TWTD posters have received an email canvassing their opinion on the Tannoy system, which has long been the subject of complaints.

“Thank you for attending the match against Morecambe at Portman Road on Saturday,” the email reads.

“We are aware of issues with the stadium sound system in certain areas and would appreciate your feedback on your matchday experience from the area that you were seated in.”

CEO Mark Ashton has previously said that bringing Portman Road up to scratch will take around 18 months with the list of tasks to be addressed numbering more than 500.

At last Monday’s PLC EGM, it was asked whether improving the Tannoy was on that list.

“Yes, yes and yes,” Ashton responded before the shareholder had finished asking his question.

Chairman Mike O’Leary added: “One point about the Tannoy system, we actually went round and tested it a couple of days ago and we discovered there were some areas where you get absolutely deafened and there were other areas where you can hear absolutely nothing at all.

“We thought the obvious thing was to turn off the bit that’s deafening everyone. It was impossible to turn off. We simply couldn’t. We’re going to have to almost start again with the Tannoy.”

Glad Ashton and O'Leary are actually addressing issues at PR. You can hear nowt in the North Stand!

Email seems a better format than surveying people via the tannoy

Its a long time since Cleggy painted the turnstiles. Are they on the list too?

Careful Phil, or some pedant will point out that Tannoy is a brand name...

No goal music today? by xrayspecs 7 Aug 2021 19:59
May have just been a duff tannoy, but I do not recall any of the canned music after we scored today.

Pleased they are asking fans for their opinion on the experience. The survey should have included a lot more. The service for food and drink at half time in Sir Bobby upper was awful, the queue was so long, so many people didn't get food or drink because they were queueing for over 15 minutes. I believe they only had 1 member of staff serving, but cant clarify as never got that close to the front of the queue to see.

Well aware, hence the treating it as a proper noun!

The tannoy wasn't the only thing to go flat under Evans! Glad to see the new owners are working hard to put the fizz back into ITFC!

Surely it would be better if there wasn't ANY feedback on the PA.....

I bought this subject up at the AGM last Monday. It is rubbish system and Mike O'Leary said they would replace the whole system.

I actually tweeted Brett johnson on saturday night about this issue. And he replied thanking me for bringing it to their attention and stated they would look into it. Seems theyve acted almost immediately to the issue. How refreshing to have owners who 1, respond to you, and 2, actually take action. (And no I'm not taking sole responsibility for reporting this, as I'm sure theyve received other complaints too).

Very witty Cavendish, but that might fall on deaf ears.

Also
The queuing in the lower north stand was too long and then they ran out of pies at half time.

"It's like people who say Tannoy when they mean "public address system". Tannoy is a brand name. Why are you all starring at me? I'm not having a go at anyone."

Maybe look at acoustics too, something to project sound out of SBR rather than have it absorbed by the thick concrete slab just above our heads?

Tan noy, is in Vietnam no wonder we could hear nothing Saturday in the North Stand.

Could not hear that the speakers in SBR lower or the concourse were working at all. I am almost certain that the tannoy system was merely extended in 2002 on the completion of South and North stands, meaning that it's about 40 years old.

I've no idea how much of these comments get read and/or have action taken but I guess we will find out. When morecombes goals were announced it didn't seem very loud...wen we scored I've no idea if they were announced or not as I couldn't hear above the noise anyway but normally I can just make it out. I realise the plan to get big screens at some point but those that don't hear the tannoy, the goalscorer are out on the score board but I didn't see anything & whilst to some it maybe pedantic some of us do use these things as a reference . Looking forward to seeing more centre backs through the doors. The rest of the team is taking shape nicely. On the stadium refresh.....I'm always happy to help out with paint jobs if extra is needed....

Good point xrayspecs. You'd think the moderators would hoover up any such mistakes.

Phew ! I honestly thought that in the 18 months I'd been away old age had really set in and my hearing had started its gradual decline !

In some ways, it is nice not hearing some of what is being broadcast, but sometimes it would be nice to hear actually what they are saying in SBR

I hope that when it is fixed they will replay the tribute to Paul Mariner given by Terry Butcher and John Wark and supposedly aired at half time..
The lack of sound and muffling made it impossible to hear a great tribute to a great legend.

Dear Mike,

The Tannoy system is sh*te.

Yours sincerely,

Every ITFC fan

It was loud enough in the SAR upper, but not very clear and the Paul Mariner tribute was, sadly, inaudible.

Anyone else not exactly buzzing about the new stadium announcer bloke either??…for me he sounded like he was commentating on a village fete, that's the vibe I got - no disrespect but he doesn't sound like the type to get people off their seats and almost falls too comfortable into the position of ‘Ipswich stadium announcer' people sitting on their hands, we need an energetic exciting and up to speed announcer to bring the youngsters on board IMO.

In the Sir Alf Upper it sounded just like Liverpool Street Station ie too much noise with little clarity.

And getting WIFI installed too is way overdue. If ITFC put a ‘captive portal' as the homepage they'd get everyone to register once by opting in. The system would automatically ‘capture' email addresses and welcome fans/visitors back when returning to PR. The club could ‘push' offers like deals on food/drinks/merchandise, generating revenue and could conduct surveys on match days etc. Oh and what's even better … 🥁… fans/visitors could even get on line which with no WIFI access currently and poor mobile signal, makes accessing the Internet nigh on impossible.
