Downes Fee More Than £1m
Monday, 9th Aug 2021 18:52

Town will receive a fee of more than £1 million for midfielder Flynn Downes, according to Welsh reports.

Downes is understood to have been at the Liberty Stadium today to undergo a medical and talks terms with BBC Sport Wales reporting that the fee will be more than £1 million with the deal close to completion.

That would take Town's incoming fees to around the £3 million mark this summer with Andre Dozzell having moved to QPR for £1 million, Norwich having paid £600,000 in compensation for Liam Gibbs and Lincoln having paid what we understand was £220,000 for Teddy Bishop.

Downes, 22, has been training with the U23s since the start of pre-season having made it known he wants to move on. However, he wasn’t involved in their 6-1 friendly defeat of Bury Town on Saturday morning.

The Welshmen appointed former MK Dons boss Russell Martin as their new manager last week with Matt Gill as his assistant and it seems likely the ex-Town first-team coach has played a role in the decision to recruit Downes from the Blues.

As reported last week, AFC Bournemouth recently ended their significantly advanced interest in the former England U19 and U20 international, while Town turned down an offer from Peterborough earlier in the summer.

Last summer, Town rebuffed bids of £1.2 million and £1.6 million from Crystal Palace for Downes, who was effectively contracted to the Blues for two more years with his deal up next summer but with the club having an option for a further season.

If correct, this is excellent business. We seem to be calling the shots on both sides of the transfer market currently: refreshing to say the least!

Top work by Ashton! Lovely to see the club reinvesting the money received from fees … something Evans rarely did. Top work.

Great deal. Hope there's some add ons too. Lincoln got a good deal for Bish at £220k but still useful funds for us. COYB!

Swansea have got themselves a bargain, but this had to happen.

I'm surprised, thought it was much lower than that. Ashton has done well.

I watched Swansea against Blackburn on EFL on Quest and they looked shambolic at the back so if Downes manages to force his way into the first team he will have to lift his game.

Good luck to him great business for both parties. As much as I liked his tenacity as a player his head was turned after the palace interest and Cook and Ashton understandably wants players who want to be here which he didn't.

You forgot the Hawkins fee.

I wonder what the Portsmouth fans are saying about Jacobs. Think that transfer was a lot further down the line than the downes one last year.

Over a million is more like it.

Teddy Bishop £220,000 - Janoi Danocien/ Ellis Harrison/ Gwion Edwards all £750,000. Something wrong there!

Interesting when you look back at the signings under Hurst -
Toto/ Nolan/ Jackson/ Danocien are all still here whilst we've rid ourselves of the youth players - Bishop/ Lankester/ Dozzell/ Downes/ Nydam

If it goes through it's good business, best for everyone I hope he goes onto have a good and successful career.

For those mourning the sale of our youth team players, let's remember this was not Beattie/Wark/Dyer etc, they have unfortunately been part of the worst town squad in living memory.

That's not me blaming them, I think in hindsight far too much was put on these young lads as the previous owner thought he could use the previous club model of bringing them through young.

There was a couple of issues with that IMO, there's was no Robson and perhaps, just perhaps, they weren't as good as we thought they were.

I wish all of them the very best and hope they prove me and the club wrong.

Mr Ashton. Take a bow son! I thought the incoming signings wee great, then we go up a gear with what we are signing! And get good money for want away players who are training with under 23s, other clubs know we want rid but we held out till the death for the max price. God we have needed this!

Ii think the business we have done is excellent. I wonder what the net figure is, sales against purchases is. We will receive substantial amounts from the sales plus a lot of high earners have gone so overall it's all good.
PC has managed to get in far better players & obviously the wages must be good but we are bound by the FFP rules. Mark Ashton deserves a medal.

leftie1972 It seems like the price was about right, Bishop is injury prone and he only had a year left on his deal after we took up the option.

Yes Europablue good point also 220,000 for a player who can only play 45 minutes at the most in a game seems good to me. Been checking how our cast offs got on over the weekend and only two done themselves justice Hawkins scored for Mansfield and Edwards also scored for Wigan and was also man of the match according to their website.

Good bit of business and good luck Flynn. The fee for Teddy was not too bad actually , for a player that spends most of his time injured.

is more than £1m the basic fee, or does it only apply if Downes fires the Swans to promotion?

I think he will find it difficult to play regularly in the championship it's such a massive step up. Didn't do enough in league one to convince me otherwise.
