Downes Completes Swans Move
Tuesday, 10th Aug 2021 10:08

Midfielder Flynn Downes has completed his move to Swansea City, signing a four-year deal.

The 22-year-old is understood to have moved for a fee in excess of £1 million with some reports putting the figure as high as £1.5 million potentially rising to £2 million.

Downes, had been training with Town’s U23s since the start of pre-season having made it known he wants to move on.

The Welshmen appointed former MK Dons boss Russell Martin as their new manager last week with Matt Gill as his assistant and it seems likely the ex-Town first-team coach has played a role in the decision to recruit Downes from the Blues.

As reported last week, AFC Bournemouth recently ended their significantly advanced interest in the former England U19 and U20 international, while Town turned down an offer from Peterborough earlier in the summer.

Last summer, Town rebuffed bids of £1.2 million and £1.6 million from Crystal Palace for Downes, who was effectively contracted to the Blues for two more years with his deal up next summer but with the club having an option for a further season.

Having joined the academy aged just seven, Brentwood-born Downes make precisely 100 appearances for the Blues - 75 starts and 25 sub appearances - scoring three goals.

The fee takes Town's incoming fees to around the £3 million mark this summer with Andre Dozzell having moved to QPR for £1 million, Norwich having paid £600,000 in compensation for Liam Gibbs and Lincoln having paid what we understand was £220,000 for Teddy Bishop.

Good luck Flynn. Arguably our best player at the club but has shown some immaturity in relation to a potential transfer. This type of behaviour isn't unusual with kids of his age. I'm sure with a good coach he'll thrive. Kane is another example. Players are big earners and want their own way. PC wants rid of all last years squad. If he doesn't play Dobra after his excellent preseason he'll be on his way.

So glad Flynn has finally found a new club and we can all move on. He will no doubt say that Swansea is a massive club, blah, blah, blah but if he'd shown more loyalty, worked hard and stayed, he could have still been at an even more successful club in 2-3 years time.

All the best coping with Martin's new play it out from the back system Flynnie.

I like Flynn as a player and expect him to push on from here, but he certainly needs to grow up a bit. If he put as much effort into his game since last summer as he did sulking that we didn't sell him to Palace, then he might have done better than Swansea City (no disrespect to them as a club).

Overall I think we've managed the situation as well as we could have done and still got decent money for him. You can guarantee we'll have a decent sell on clause, same as Dozzell.

Marinersnose…. Probably best player at the club!!!

Do some of you people actually go to games, a complete liability and good riddance I say. The dressing room will be much better off without him.

Good luck to him. Interesting to see how he gets on. Some say needs a good coach, wasn't Gill more or less in charge when there was a good run just before they appointed another manager called Paul. We all know how they've gone so far !

Liability on the pitch, bad tackles and gobbing off to the ref. It was like he wanted to be sent off, didn't want him to leave at the start but glad he's gone attitude stunk. Not like now it's even a wage issue he just didn't give a toss. Be good to see if he's as good as we/he thinks or will he just slip down the football league after a few seasons
