Cook: Will We Strengthen Before the Window Closes? I Don’t Know
Friday, 20th Aug 2021 09:55

Town boss Paul Cook isn’t ruling out further additions in the remaining days of the transfer window “if the right opportunity offers itself” but says he is happy with the squad he has assembled over the summer.

Quizzed on whether he will look to add to the 16 signings he has already made since the end of last season before the window closes at 11pm on Tuesday 31st August, he said: “I think one of the greatest challenges for us was probably in the summer when we’d gone a week or two without signing a player. People think we’re not active.

“I just think when you’re at good clubs, and we’re a good club, there’s no getting away from that. We’re a good club now and we’ve always been a good club, and always will be a good club.

“Good clubs are always active. We never stop. It doesn’t matter what the position is, you’re always looking to strengthen.

“Have we put a squad together at the minute that’s complete, that’s final? No, we haven’t. Does that mean we’ll strengthen before the window closes? I don’t know.

“I think if the right opportunity offers itself, I’m sure [CEO] Mark Ashton and our board would follow that through.

“If the right opportunity doesn’t present itself, then I am so happy with the squad it’s untrue, I’ve got to tell you that. But I’d just like to see everyone on the pitch and training for a bit.”

I think paul and co. Have assembled a good squad. Being pickey id like a better quality goalkeeper fo for competition for no. One.i agree with paul it would be nice to have everyone fit. I do think we need to see fraser at no. 10 to link play better. We also need a plan B. Id like plan B to be a 4.3.3 with piggott up top with a hihh press like liverpool. I think this would be a brilliant plan B as tempo would be high for last half hour. Just my thoughts. Paul and co will suceed in time. A no 2 with paul would be a good call as an extra pair of eyes and opinion would be helpful in the heat of battle. Super blues forever 💙

Squad looks good, certainly stronger than the last few seasons in my opinion. Results havent been good, but the club is changing massively on and off the pitch. Imagine a business having to completely reinvent itself after 14 years of mismanagement, it will always take time.

Maybe one more central defender for me. But with Edmundson and Coulson getting close to fitness our squad looks close to being complete. A defensive midfielder has also been mentioned, but maybe that is something to look at in January if it isn´t quite working with the current personnel.

A good start would be for the club to acknowledge and publish the true number of outgoings from the club numbering 32 players to date so putting perspective on the paltry 16 coming in.
Opposition managers will be using the 'Cheque book 'Ipswich to motivate and this needs to be quelled.

No business can turnover this quantity of professional people and just knit together within a week or so but I expect the quality to shine through provided Cook plays people in their correct positions. For example Chaplin out so Edwards in at left wing. Sorted.

With 2-3 injuries and an illness we are almost down to a "first eleven" again so I think 2-3 more are necessary. We are always going to pick up knocks and the odd suspension, we need a squad of 20 first teamers. We mustn't forget also there are likely to be loan departures before 31st too.
