Morsy Red Card Appeal Rejected
Wednesday, 1st Sep 2021 18:27

New signing Samy Morsy’s appeal against his red card in his final game for Middlesbrough has been unsuccessful.

The Egyptian international, who joined the Blues from Boro ahead of yesterday’s transfer deadline, was dismissed in the 81st minute of the Teessiders’ 1-1 home draw with Blackburn at the weekend, a decision which looked harsh in the extreme.

However, the appeal has been rejected and the 29-year-old will now miss three League One matches.

Morsy will however be able to make his Blues debut in the Papa John’s Trophy tie against West Ham United’s U21s on Tuesday 14th September.

OK, I get that a ref might make a mistake in the heat of a match, especially when there's no VAR, and when he's probably influenced by a previous red for the opposition. Even refs are human. But what on earth is the review committee for?

There should be some kind of leeway, how about a one game ban? That way they don't have to admit that the ref made a bad decision, but they can also accept that it wasn't a bad red card challenge.

Not saying it´s a red, but I can´t say it´s nothing in it either, Morsys foot is raised, lots of force. Probably not a red, but I´ve seen far worse red cards.

Quite ludicrous. It could be argued just as easily that it was the Blackburn player that committed a foul by running into an outstretched leg. The people setting the standards really need to go back to watching recordings of football before they started re-interpreting the rules and created a none-contact sport.

The crux of the matter is "Intent" and did Morsy intend to injure the player. I think we can safely say NO. During my time of watching football players went in far harder years ago than they do now. Touch a player and he goes down because he knows in 9 out of 10 cases the Ref will give a free kick or a pen. Italians started this rolling about as if polaxed and it's spread World wide. If it had been stamped out years ago we wouldn't be in this situation.

Bound to have been giving Referee grief before tackle. Hope All our decent squad stay out of Refs book in future

What con fuses me is that the Blackburn was a yellow and Morsy was a straight red!

It's ridiculous, but he should never have appealed, the system is fixed, we all know it.
