Cook: Walton Adds Winning Mentality
Friday, 10th Sep 2021 11:16

Boss Paul Cook is delighted to have competition in goal having signed Christian Walton on loan from Brighton a couple of days before the deadline, having already added Vaclav Hladky from Salford earlier in the window and with Tomas Holy still at the club.

Walton, 25, previously played for Cook at Wigan and was part of his side which won the League One title in 2017/18 and spent another campaign on loan with the Latics as they successfully retained their place in the Championship the following year.

“In Christian, a lad who has been promoted at Wigan, went on to play for Blackburn in the Championship,” Cook said.

“He has had promotions, has been successful and brings that winning mentality to a new group and that’s something that we probably lacked in the early games, that real winning mentality, those leadership qualities that we need on a football pitch.”

Reflecting on the competition in goal, Cook added: “You know the goalkeeping situation has been with Vaz [Hladky] coming in, Tomas was in a situation where he couldn't have possibly left and maybe not left.

“Tomas has been terrific, absolutely outstanding and he trains every day like it's the last. His appetite for the game has been brilliant.

“Vaz has probably had more of a tough introduction, but again he's an outstanding goalkeeper and he proved that last year at Salford.

“In Christian, we took an opportunity to bring another goalkeeper I've worked with previously at Wigan Athletic and I know inside out.

“So we are now very strong in every area of the pitch, and that's what I love, I love that competition for places because as you know yourselves, I won't say I never will, but I don't really change winning teams.

“So if you get your shirt and we're winning, the reality is you're going to keep it for as long as we keep winning.”

Cook says there’s no out-and-out number one as such: “If you have number ones and twos in football, then you're categorising people. I don't believe in that.

“We've got competition for places all over the pitch. If you look at central midfield, Tom Carroll has had two outstanding training weeks now, Tom Carroll has been absolutely excellent. Jon Nolan is back training, Idris [El Mizouni] has been outstanding all pre-season.

“We've got players and training is lively, let me tell you, and that's what we want. We want this club to grow now.”

Cookie the Tractor Boyz

Ah, you should see Cookie on a tractor.
Gone the old look that yoked him to the soil,
He's a new man now, of the Tractor machine,
His nerves of metal and his blood oil.

The clutch curses, but the gears obey
His least bidding, and lo, Cookie's away
Out of the farmyard, scattering hens.
Riding to work now as a great man should,

He is the knight at arms breaking the fields'
Mirror of silence, emptying the wood
Of foxes and squirrels and bright jays.
The sun comes over the tall trees

Kindling all the hedges, but not for him
Who runs his engine on a different fuel.
And all the birds are singing, bills wide in vain,
As Cookie passes proudly up Portman lane.

If anyone thought that after making 19 signings things were just going to happen then i think expectations were too high.

I will say however that just based on pure luck with the squad we have assembled i would have though we would have won at least 1 game.

I do think what most are forgetting though is aside from signing 19 players we also have the human aspect of it were most have had to relocate themselves and any family they may have, they wont have a house from the off so are probably living out of hotels this all plays a part in bedding in football aside and i think they could be forgiven for taking a while to settle.

I dont think any one who is a fan of ITFC or knows anything about football / current players could complain about the squad we now have, save for maybe 1 or 2 more defensive minded players. Not only that but despite not having a win yet the football we are playing is far better to watch and i feel like we have scored more goals in these few games than we did all of last season.

My honest opinion for our issues in shipping two goals a game is due to Hladcky in my opinion, now i dont actually think he is a bad keeper, you dont have his record and win the golden gloves for nothing, however he has made two steps up, in front of probably the biggest crowd he has played in front of in regards to a team he plays for, and the weight of expectation to perform. I think Walton will prove to be a key loan for that reason and that also give Hladcky the time to settle and build his confidence back up, play a few blinders in the cup games we have left and he will be back in the team i am sure.

Also not to place the burden firmly at the keepers door it has to be said that some of the mistakes being made by those at the back or just in front are quite criminal but again most of these players have not played together and there is a lot expected of them, but on that they are pro footballers and in any team those mistakes should not happen, they should know better.

Woolfenden needs to be marshalled and led Burgess could be that guy, but i think it will be Burgess and Edmundson taking the cb spots and im looking forward to that because between Nsiala and Woolfenden it feels too panicky and they have a mistake a game in them which doers not breed confidence, and i should imagine has not helped Hladcky. And yes i know toto got injured early but i have seen enough of him since he joined us to have that opinion.

I have a good feeling about tomorrow, i hope i have not jinxed it, but this team excites me.

Last thing too i dont get why people get on Cooks back so fast, are people forgetting the mess and shambles that our beloved club had become under Evans, i think its plain to see how much rot had set in and it isnt just assembling the team, its backroom staff of which we actually seem to have now, and also the feel of the place. For example in my opinion how can you not have working card machines when buying something to eat or drink, the absolute minimum was spent by Evans and over time we rotted, well that ends now. Cook has a good cv and again he has brought these players in, well requested i am sure, Ashton has already proven his worth, but i think Cook deserves more than what he is getting at the minute considering what was inherited.

And to be clear i dont want to hear anything about last season, in my eyes it doesnt count, every player had multiple chances, it was all nicey nicey, that didnt work so they got aired out, that also did not work so bye bye. I dont feel like any of the departed cared about playing for us, i feel like they were just picking up their nice wages and just crusing knowing they have it easy. When you consider Bonne who is only on loan right no leaves everything on the pitch, is scoring and kissed the badge, thats what i want to see, passion and pride for playing for the brillinat club and the club we all love.

I totally agree with tractor clarke. Ive said before lets give cook at least to xmas for the side to gel etc. And as for last year chambo and co were crap and downed tools trying to get cook out. The club had stagnate d. I dont like norwich but i was jealous of their drive and vigor. I want that for my club ive supported for 50 plus yrs. I never lost my passion for the blues but i was fed up of watching my team give up not giving 100 per cent for each other like they do now. Team morale is worth anything. To die for your team mate literally. I see this in this bunch of guys and in manager cook. I get pissed off at loseing and draws but hell we will lose. Draw andWIN together as ateam of players .manager and fans. So come on you super blues forever 💙. You are a huge part of my life. To a man give it all uve got tomorrow for each other and as fans we will give ye all we've got. ....bill
