Burns: We Can Still Win the League
Thursday, 16th Sep 2021 10:26

Despite Town's miserable start to the new season new boy Wes Burns remains in confident mood and has even insisted: “We can still win the league.”

The Blues are sitting in 22nd place in League One without a win in any of their six league games this season and have also lost in both the Carabao Cup and EFL Trophy, making it eight outings without a victory.

Tuesday night’s 2-1 home defeat to West Ham’s U21 side was the latest setback for manager Paul Cook as he looks to find the winning formula that his much-changed side have been unable to find so far this term.

But ex-Fleetwood player Burns, 26, is confident that better times are ahead. He knows the longer Town have to wait to record their much-need first win of the season, the more likely fans are to air their frustration, as some did after Saturday’s 5-2 hammering by Bolton at Portman Road.

Burns said: “As a team we may be lacking a bit of confidence but with the calibre of player that we’ve brought in this summer we are still looking for our first win.

“I’ve said it myself in the dressing room and I’ve said it to the coaches as well — we just need a game where we might not play particularly well and it’s not a great game either, but we score a scruffy goal in the 90th minute and we go away with a 1-0 win.

“That’s the type of result that we need at the moment to kick-start our season. We have not won in eight games now, including the cup games, and Tuesday night was very disappointing.

“In terms of the confidence, we all know we have the quality of players to go on and win this league if we can sort out the problems that we do have.”

Cardiff-born Burns, a Welsh U21 international, was the first of Cook’s 19 signings in the summer transfer window, arriving in early June. He added: “I was the first one through the door and at the time the squad was very thin. When I first came into training there were only six, seven or eight of us in there and that was including players from last year.

“At the time, looking around, we were very thin on the ground. But the project that was described to me by the manager and Mark Ashton, when they got in touch with me over the summer, was really a no-brainer for me. I wanted to be a part of what they were building.

“It was a transfer window like no other for the club. Like I said, when I came in for the first couple of weeks there was only a handful of us and we couldn’t really put on proper football technical sessions because of the lack of numbers.

“We were drafting in younger players from the U23s to bolster the numbers so it was also a pre-season like no other as far as I was concerned.

“It was very strange because week by week we were adding new faces — one here, a couple there — and it was constant like that until the window closed at the end of last month.

“A new face would appear from time and it was like a breath of fresh air as we saw the squad taking shape. As the weeks went by the squad was going from strength to strength as each signing was made.

“It was literally a case of going from one day to the next virtually knowing another new player would be coming in. We were all in the same boat, not knowing the area and trying to find places to live, so that made it easier for the players to bed themselves in.

“We were all going out for food and coffees together, chatting away and comparing notes on how we were getting on with finding the best places to live in the area.

“The fact that we were all total strangers in unfamiliar surroundings seemed to make the settling-in process that bit easier.

“It’s still an ongoing process and each house that comes on the market is proving to be of interest to a lot of the lads. We can all see each other refreshing the estate agents’ websites to try to be first with the latest news on what’s available.

“We’ve even been to view some of the same houses. People are coming into the dressing room saying they went to view a house and the other guys are all asking where it was. When they hear its location there are lads saying ‘Yes, I went to see that one’ and stuff like that. It’s been a bit of fun at times.”

Agree entirely. When the wins start coming they'll keep coming. Regarding the patience of our owners, I'm sure they stated it may not happen this season?

No, realistically we can't! The very best we can hope for is a play-off place and that by that time we are performing well enough to get through by that route instead. But honestly, I'm not holding my breath. Anyway, COYB!

Cat - what are you talking about? Monkey is telling it as it is. Personally I am getting sick to death of half-wits spinning positivity where there is none at the moment. The table doesn't lie and nor do the results that have put us where we are. We may well go on a run soon that will take us higher up the league but from what has happened so far this season I can't see it. And the more we suffer poor results the more we will spiral, as is happening right before our eyes.

2 more pages of negative drivel with 40 games still to go. Man City lost 5-2 at home to leicester last september and were half way down the league in October yet won the league at a canter.

Why are some people only happy when things are going badly?

I think I while back Cook said that he wants his players to go out feeling invincible - that worried me at the time - I would want them to go out confident that if they work hard to the game plan they should win - but they still need to make it happen. Going onto the pitch feeling invincible has a wife of complacency...

Bazza think you are missing the point, People are NOT happy when things are badly , and they have been going badly for over a decade, , The hopes were raised when Cook took over, that went badly, the hopes were raised further by club being sold, and we are now in bottom 3 in LEAGUE 1. So i dont think fans that are p####d off with Cook at the moment need to be berated .

I like your positivity Wes but remember where we are in the table and the top teams are walking away at an alarming rate whilst we are hoping for a one nil win? Basically, our team if you can call it that yet, are naive and sloppy. We go off with a bang and then end up as a damp squib. There appears to be no resilience in the defence and I include the midfield because they don't get back quickly enough. Looking at the top clubs in the premiership you don't see the defence left alone. The backtracking by the forwards is amazing let alone the mid fielders. Looking in slow motion during the game on Youtube, the lack of team defence is criminal.
As to tactics in this league, having one up front is a joke. Why has Cook bought in so many forwards when he plays his current system where one player is isolated up top? I have a horrible feeling it will be another year before we can get anywhere near the playoffs playing as we are at the moment with the current system. I really hope I'm wrong but having been there in the good times beating Man U with ease makes me very sad dropping to the near bottom of the third tier in football! COYB things have to get better.....don't they!???

DaGremloid - There might be nothing to be positive about the results but there's plenty elsewhere.
BTW that post weren't addressed to you so butt out. As for your half wit comment (lol) that's brave of you ‘big man'

I really do get that, and nobody felt more disillusioned driving away from PR last Saturday than I did but we are 6 games in, we have 40 to go, 120 points to play for and our role, job, responsibility, call it what you want, is to get behind the team and help them fight their way out of this mess.

I get the decade of disappointment, for me its been 30 of the last 35 years after the Robson era, but being in the bottom three in league one with 6 games to go is a disaster, not after 6 with 40 to go. Cook was appointed by Evans but he was Gamechanger's man, they had Evans sack Lambert and had been talking to Evans for 12 months about the takeover. Brett Johnson admitted in the summer he knew that they would only keep 10% of the playing staff. Its not Cook's hatchet job its the whole board.

Im as impatient as anybody but our negativity doesnt help, and we have to try and see the bigger picture for a bit longer. And give everything to lift the team. The atmosphere at times in our four home games has been better than anything I saw in the halcyon days of Robson, light years ahead, and I was amongst it. Recreate that at every game home and away and It will help the boys. If we do our all to make that support undoubted and renowned as the best around we will have done our bit. But the comments on here don't give me any reassurance our supporters are that committed when the chips are down.

If we get thumped in our next three games and have nothing after 9 then I suspect the board will have conversations about their options, but trust them to do their job as we do what we can to give them a lift.
And when it's sh*t like it is at the moment we should keep a bit of understanding of what impact this negativity has on the team.

Im off to Lincoln Saturday with my resolve strengthened about the role i, and the 1800 with me can and will play to give my team that lift. I hope everyone else feels the same way.

When you're in the bottom 3 without a win after 6 games, having conceded at least 2 in every game and have not played any of the top sides, I don't think Wes or anybody at the club should be talking about still winning the league. Everyone should accept that we're a push over at the moment and focus on defending as a team, keeping a few clean sheets and winning some games to get away from the relegation places. When we've done that we can then look upwards but not before.

Two or more points from the next two games would be a good start. A clean sheet would be a good start. Having a good squad on paper is no guarantee of success. Look at Ipswich and Sunderland over the last couple of seasons. It takes heart. sweat and leadership on the pitch and off it. I think we're all fed up of our players thinking they're too good for this league. It's time to step up. BTW what are the odds on us winning the league?

Perhaps we should roll out one of our players to tell us our season is over 6 games in? I'm sure that would go down well!!

Lots of talk! Basically winning is done on the pitch not in interviews! Lets just be real and hope for a win really soon otherwise the maths will dictate our season is over before it gets going!

Cat - what has Monkeyblue said that is wrong?
As DaGremloid said, s/he is only telling it as it is. Plenty to be positive about you say! It's ONLY results that are not! That's hilarious, as we sit in the relegation places of 3rd tier football, with little sign yet of what our best team is, huge question marks over the formation, certain players being able to adapt, morale, the quality of the coaching staff, the manager's capacity for a plan b or making an effective in-game tactical switch. That'll do for starters.
Monkey, myself & a few others were taking serious flack for pointing out clear issues with Cook & his methods since the end of last season; things we've been proven right about, but you & others just lumped in without any engagement of substance to berate us for not being real supporters etc. At all times I have outlined the reasons behind any points or criticisms I have made & I think Monkey does that too, generally anyway; yet the responses always make it out as though we just throw out negativity for the sake of it, with no rationale. Ironically this tends to come from one dimensional posters who offer nothing in terms of debate or argument, just immature guff about being so-called fans or being negative.
And if you don't want other people to respond to the comments you made to Monkey, don't post on a message board, send your comments directly. Your engagement with him/her was unsolicited in the first place, so telling DaGremloid to "butt out" is a bit schoolyard rich.

Len - ‘with respect' monkeys post from 11.38 is what pished me off. Banging on about what ifs and maybes to add weight to his loathing of P.C.
The positives I refer to are the new owners, money to spend, good attendances, club reconnection, football being played on the front foot, quality players (although the results haven't done them justice yet) and of course Ed Sheehan lol!
I will debate football with anyone, I attend games and are generally respectful of ‘most posters' opinions. It's too early in the season for such negativity, it's sucks all the good energy out of you. Like the players and board have said, patience is key here, specially after a complete overhaul. Give it a few more games then see where we are at. If things don't improve then Cook should go.
BTW I don't do PM, if I call someone out then I'll direct my post at them and use their tag. Simple!

We have Lincoln away then Sheff Wed and Doncaster at home. If we can't muster at least one win out of those then Cook and his abysmal coaching staff can go take a hike!

I can honestly see us going the whole of August and September without a win.

Just get the team to keep possession and be more patient throughout the 90 minutes. Stop playing the "end to end" open game because at the moment when the other team gets the ball forward they easily score. Keep the ball more and be more patient to work the openings, the killer pass, the shot on goal and the precise cross. Keep the ball.

“We can still win the league”

Stop saying this sh#te....for two years we heard how we were really the best team in the league. Until we got a new manager who said we were crap. This year we haven't won a match. Show we're the best, stop saying it.
