Morsy: We Let Ourselves Down
Sunday, 3rd Oct 2021 10:58

Skipper Sam Morsy admitted that he and his team-mates let themselves down as they were beaten 2-1 at Accrington Stanley, whose “horrible” approach he compared to a non-league side.

Goals from Colby Bishop and Harry Pell saw Stanley come from behind at half-time to take the three points, Macauley Bonne having given the Blues the lead with his eighth goal of the season.

“You come to these places, it’s always going to be hard, but I think we let ourselves down today,” Morsy said.

What was the result down to? “They’re a horrible team, they play like a non-league team, and that’s no disrespect to them, that’s just the style and it works for them and we just couldn’t quite get to grips it in the second half.

“I thought the first half was OK, they’re horrible at what they do, they didn’t really create much, as we didn’t. Two goals, we could have done a lot better but it just wasn’t our day today.”

He added: “This is them, this how they play. But I think we’re delusional if we think we’re going to play like we did against Doncaster every week and hit teams for six. It’s a reality check, we’re going to have to work really hard this week and go again.”

Town travelled up to the North-West on Thursday and trained at Manchester United’s old Cliff training ground and the Egyptian international says everything was put in place before the game.

“Preparation was brilliant,” he said. “Everyone’s been on it, everyone knew their jobs, we couldn’t have been more prepared, everyone knew what was coming, but when you step over the white line, you have to do it.”

Were there a few home truths from manager Paul Cook afterwards? A few harsh words? “Listen, we’ve let ourselves down today, we’ve let the fans down today, they travelled in really good numbers, but we have to put it right next Saturday [when Shrewsbury visit Portman Road].”

The 846 fans on the open terrace didn’t have the easiest of afternoon with rain falling heavily both before and during the game.

“They’ve travelled in numbers and that’s brilliant and we’re going to need them this season,” the 29-year-old continued.

“They were unbelievable the other night and we’re looking forward to a full house on Saturday.”

Town had appeared to have built up something of a head of steam following the 6-0 defeat of Doncaster on Tuesday, their third game unbeaten.

“Each game’s individual, it doesn’t matter whether you have momentum, as you’ve seen today, as you’ve seen before,” the former Middlesbrough, Wigan and Chesterfield man reflected.

“The Doncaster game doesn’t matter, it’s back to basics, work really hard and be ready Saturday.”

Morsy admitted it was a painful defeat to take: “Yes, because the way they play is disgusting. I think one of the players just kicked the ball out of the stadium [in order to waste time], I’ve never seen that before in my career. But we lick our wounds and we go again.”

However, the Wolverhampton-born schemer says that despite the defeat there’s no need for panic.

“Not at all, we had a little spell, and this is a reality check and we go again,” he insisted. “We have to be better, we have to work harder, we have to be better at what we do and we go again.

“We know we let ourselves down, there are no excuses, there’s no pointing fingers, individually and collectively it wasn’t good enough today and we know that.

“We work hard, we assess the game and we go again. It’s a work in progress, we’re not going to win every game, but we go again Saturday.”

Town are still to win back-to-back games this season - or since boss Cook took charge in March - but Morsy says the players are just taking things a game at the time.

“It’s just about winning Saturday really, we’re not thinking about back-to-back wins,” he said.

“It’s going to be a slow process to get up the league, we know that because of the way we started, but it starts with Saturday.”

There has been much talk of the squad which was assembled over the summer needing time to gel, but after 10 games shouldn’t that talk be over? Shouldn’t the Blues, who are 19th, 12 points away from their target of the top two, be doing better than they are? “We know that.”

The Blues are next in action at Gillingham in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday evening when manager Cook is set to make wholesale changes.

Easy to say all this after the game. Why on earth weren't they fired up before it?

The "work hard and go again" statement is a recurring theme which could be used as the clubs strap line over the last decade or so.

So much of what is being said and done now is worryingly familiar.

WHY ? Why when you have just spanked a team do the team come out and play like s##t ?
WHY ? Was there no sign of confidence. WHY was there no sign of having gelled ? WHY ,Did the team fail to do the job when Cook had said ''these things wont happen once we have Moresy in'' .

Get used to teams playing like this, until you do you'll stay in this league. If you don't work as hard as the opposition you can have all the skill in the world but they will overcome you. As a team you need to have different capabilities to change tactics if certain ones are not working. Mr Cook if you always play to the same pattern as a team and have not got a plan A, B or C you are very easy to counteract as the opposition know exactly what to do and what you don't like. I have worked it out and I'm not a manager! Don't let us play out from the back, play a high pressure game and that makes us nervy in possession and makes us lump the ball up long to as isolated forward.

Can't say I'm impressed with him describing Accrington as “Horrible” “Non league” and “Disgusting”. That's not how I want my captain talking about a team with small resources who deservedly and perfectly fairly beat us. I love a glass of wine but those grapes are too sour.

Blaming the opposition for being more tactically astute, working harder and wanting to win more than we did, and comparing them to a non-league club, gives the answer to the question WHY!

Am seriously starting to question whether this ‘project' is a step too far for PC. Emotion apart, his record since being appointed is poor; for every pace forward, we almost inevitably take two back. No amount of words and cliches have been able to rectify what is a major fault line.

Strange how other teams manage to beat these “non-league” sides. Maybe your ego is part of the problem

"I think one of the players just kicked the ball out of the stadium [in order to waste time], I've never seen that before in my career."

Stadium?! That's being a bit generous, I've seen bigger sheds. 'Ground' I think is as kind as you can be about Wham!!

Question: knowing what they would face at Accrington, why did they train at the old ManU training ground? That can only encourage these players' sense of superiority and entitlement.

Normally, I wouldn't like to hear our captain talk about the other team being "horrible" and "disgusting," but it was pretty funny when one of their players deliberately hoofed the ball out of the ground to waste time when he had a teammate yelling for a simple through-ball.

So the reason we lost is because they imposed their style on the game and we didn't? No justification for slagging them off. This is league one and we are completely one dimensional. Perhaps we should ask teams to play how we'd like them to and maybe we'll win more games. What a ridiculous interview!

Unfortunately we did the same against Cheltenham (although had a better first half), & to an extent against Burton (having had a good first half). The same problems away from home…we don't seem to be learning. We need control the game more, with our ‘better' players, to get the results we need and for us not to have to watch Cheltenham, Accrington et al boss second halves and time waste continually. It was a tough, sobering watch.

You certainly did mate especially us the traveling fans who fought there way through a petrol crisis to watch that rubbish. You should all be totally ashamed of yourselves after last Tuesday's result.

So we've got a Football Snob for a Captain. There are many ways to play football, and always have been, and always will be. You make the best of what you've got and Morsy and the players who he is paid to lead, didn't yesterday.

well paid players complaining and insulting the opposition [as playing like non league] because despite them playing for a ''huge club'' and as said being rather well paid , THEY LOST and hadnt the desire effort OR skill to play well enough .SORRY Morsey thats not what fans want to hear.

Yes, it is. Very poor from a captain.

Should choose his words more carefully. I suspect he's just given some great motivation to AS when they visit Portman Road later in the season. Not that they appear to need it - it's us lot that need to find some fighting spirit….

It's refreshing to hear an honest interview for a change, none of this “I thought we were excellent” tosh that we have been used to. Stanley were spoilers (by all accounts) so why not say it as it is. Horrid or not it's a results business, so if we win all is good, if we lose then they are all pony.

No disrespect intended to MORSY, I suppose it was just his turn. However, we just keep getting the same excuses that we've had for the past how ever long? Somewhere along the line, somebody really does need to understand that actions speak so much louder than words !!!!

Don't they do there homework?? They must know how Stanley play ,had 2days up North ,what did they do in training ??.until we learn to counter these type of teams we are going nowhere.

As regards your comments cat, we need to get a grip on how to handle these sides quickly, anyone from other teams watching that shambles yesterday now has a clear idea how to nullify our players. Things will only get tougher going into Winter with poor pitches etc. We have a manager who seems clueless when his only plan isn't working and we really need an injection of ideas when we are up against it.

Dosent matter how you win Sam as long as you get the result. Sounds like some of the players think they are too good for this league. Paul Cook needs to win next week and win well. These wealthy owners of clubs don't give managers long to get success and will no doubt have somebody lined up in case things don't go to plan.

phillev231069 - things take time to evolve, we were on our knees under Evans, lambert, Chambers & co and we've been through the mother of all clear outs. Remember them dour games when a shot on target felt like a goal? Yesterdays game was the anti climax from Tuesdays superb performance, no need for panic YET! P.C stats ain't good though and that is beginning to become a concern.
Sill, im well up for next Saturday's game and then Cambridge away, and that is priceless!

There is a very good reason they play like a non league side.

With the exception of Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham schoolboys, every team we've played this season were non league not that long ago.

Still, at least it can't get any worse........

Before you enjoy playing in the Championship I'm afraid you have to play and deal with these kind of teams, Morsy. And if you don't deal with them you get what you deserve. Totally pathetic comment to make about a club doing the best they can with the limited resources they have and then beating Chequebook Town.
