Cook: A Lot of Them Did Themselves the World of Good Tonight
Tuesday, 5th Oct 2021 22:14

Town boss Paul Cook was delighted as his much-changed side beat Gillingham 2-0 at the Priestfield Stadium in the Papa John’s Trophy, his first cup victory in charge of the Blues, and felt the players involved did themselves “the world of good” with their display.

Joe Pigott and Conor Chaplin scored in either half to see Town to their first win in a cup competition this season at the third attempt.

“I’m delighted,” Cook said. “I think when you look back to the Newport game and West Ham game probably we were really disappointed with the results because we’d expect the quality of the player we have within the club [to have won those matches].

“But lads haven’t got going at our club yet. I know we’re 10 league games in and a couple of cups but Pigott hasn’t got going, Chaplin hasn’t got going, the lads have been hampered with injuries, suspensions, Covid.

“And tonight we’ve seen glimpses of what they can do, which was great for our supporters who travelled across.

“We create chances, that’s a given. We were all disappointed when we left the stadium on Saturday. No one more so than myself, the staff, the players as well because we knew we let everyone down.

“But when we’re new and we’re learning about each other, we’ve got to go through a bit of pain to get to where we want to go.

“Tonight was an opportunity for players who haven’t played a lot of games and been subs and a lot of them did themselves the world of good tonight, and that’s great credit to them.”

Cook knows he will need those players as the season progresses: “One hundred per cent. I don’t know our best team, I’m sure our supporters at the minute don’t know our best team. Our best formation seems to be set in stone in a certain way.

“There are one or two positions we’ll alter in games, without a shadow of a doubt. But tonight was an opportunity and I thought the lads took that opportunity and I’m sure our fans have left the stadium quite happy.”
"Cook confirmed that Sone Aluko had been down to start: “Sone Aluko was ill this morning, our front four was supposed to be Aluko, Chaplin, Edwards and Pigott and that’s a very, very heavy front four in any division, it’s good.

“The quality is in the squad, in the club, the fitness levels are going up all the time. We all left Accrington on the floor because the previous three games had promised so much and we fell short.

“All I can promise our fans is that we’ll work so hard to make it right, that’s all we can promise them and if any day comes when we have given our best and it’s not enough then we’ll shake hands and do what we do. It’s football. But we’ve got such a long way to go this season and every game can build confidence quickly.

“Tonight I was very pleased for lads like Louie Barry, for example, who came on and looked electric and bright, which is great for confidence because confidence goes away quickly and it also comes back very quickly and we had a lot of good performances tonight.”

Regarding Myles Kenlock, who made his first appearance of the season having been without a squad number and training with the U23s since pre-season, Cook said: “You know in the summer we did what we did, there were a lot of players we wanted to leave.

“Myles Kenlock has done nothing but perform for this club with credit. There’ll be no disrespectful treatment of players like that. Myles hasn’t caused problems, Myles never left, he’s got a contract with the club, he’s been welcomed back into the squad now, and as you can see tonight he performed excellently and I’m delighted for the young man.”

Asked who else caught his eye, he added: “I only singled Louie out because it’s hard when you’ve come with such a reputation from Villa.

“Kayden Jackson, you can go right throughout players, Kane Vincent-Young. We played well tonight, it was a solid performance away from home.

“We looked a threat all the time and we looked solid at the back, and that’s the performances that we want.”

Tunisia international Idris El Mizouni again impressed in midfield. “Brilliant, excellent,” Cook enthused. “He’s doing the job required in those middle areas. Still got a lot of learning to do, but he’s an absolute credit of a young man and I love his attitude.”

Have those involved today given him something to think about? One hundred per cent, I thought [Toto] Nsiala and [Luke] Woolfenden were excellent. Tomas [Holy] had a little blip at home in the last one has come in tonight and has looked a commanding goalkeeper.

“Great credit to everyone, I’m thankful to our supporters for travelling, it’s getting to winter now, you’ve got your hats on.

“We’re still in the competition, we’ve got a game against Colchester next, that will always attract a little bit of interest, won’t it?”

Really glad to see a win tonight but again against a club punching above their weight but they gave us a good game. Still concerned PC hasn't been up against the top teams and won yet but I sincerely hope we start to do just that. We have been very lucky to have played most of our games against the low half of the table. Time will tell but we have to believe it will happen and hopefully sooner than later>COYB

Selective stats are pointless as are ITFC with nearly quarter of the season gone.
This season played 13 W3 D 4 L 6
Most other managers would not be in situ with these results especially with all the investment that has been made.
I'm sorry but he has to go.

@Sally

Agreed. Selective stats don't tell it all, like the ones you've just given.

Most other managers wouldn't have decimated an awful squad to gamble a rebuild on (paper) a much better prospective squad. Most managers wouldn't have attracted the calibre of players we now have for a league one squad. Most other managers wouldn't have been the preferred choice of a consortium willing to back that manager in that gamble with huge sums ready & on the table to do so.

Considering the context of the situation, other than blips, I'm far more confident we'll come out of this a much better squad than we ever would with what we had a year ago with players that still need the patience that some impatient "fans" don't seem to get.

The players we have attracted is mostly down to money, cooks record is still abysmal, he still seems destined to not get us in the auto promotion places as must. Have been our remit, worse than Hurst with a clueless backroom team, winning against Gillingham in the muckey mouse cup does not change that

Sally. Totally typical of a certain section of our fans who have no idea about the time it takes to get a whole new squad settled in. Criticise some1 for quoting stats, then quote ur own to suit ur own agenda.

@sally don't worry about other town fans suggesting you're thick and don't understand football or that you're not a true fan because you're unhappy with us winning do few games under Cooks leadership. These Cook fanboys are fully paid up members of the happy clappy brigade who have no ambition and are happy if we don't get promoted this season. Please keep putting your views forward Sally and if you get to like Cook don't be afraid to change your mind and say so. This is a debating forum and we're allowed our own ideas. It's not North Korea so ignore the bullying language

@blues1 help us out and tell us how long does it take to get a team to gel ? Even Cook ain't using that tired old line any more btw. Sally has quoted stats for the whole season so what is her error ? With your vast understanding of football won't don't you enlighten Sally as to what stats she should be looking at. His record is much worse than Lambert's with a much better squad so I'm looking forward to being educated on this.
@jewellinthetown so the defeats are all blips and the wins I guess are Cook the mastermind ? What section of fans are you in that you blindly applaud Cook who has played Piggot at 10 when he is a 9, Celina at 10 when he is a 7 or 11, Fraser at 7 and 11 when he is a 10, Harper at 6 and 8 when he is a 10, made subs against Cheltenham and others when it's too late for the subs to even kick a ball, put players in the U23s for no fault of theirs other than they didn't take a summer move away to boost the budget, and only played one formation home and away against all types of opposition. Sorry to bring us back to the facts but that's the reality

Didn't go to the match but listened on Radio Suffer . One player who has had a lot of criticism and abuse on here is Kayden Jackson. Im not one of those fans who has a favourite player who can't do anything wrong but always gives credit when it's due. The commentary on the match picked out Jackson for his high level of work rate and over all performance. I don't think Cook feels he has a future at the club but has to give him games to put him in the shop window. Piggot scored tonight but in general has been very disappointing and has not shown the required work rate and aggression in matches.

Paul Cook: "I don't know our best team."

Are you kidding me? Ten games in, with the squad you personally recruited and selected, and you don't know what your best team is?

Unbelievable.

So because I'm pro P.C does that make me a ‘happy clapper' Bossman?? or is it because I admire the way he broke up last years team, playing the formation to give us an entertaining brand of football and making match days a good experience long side his passion and energy.
If you look at the last 5 games it shows improvement and that at this moment in time is acceptable.
There are question marks against him which we are all aware of but in this moment I don't think a change of manager is necessary.

Excellent result away from home albeit against a weaker Gillingham team who rested many players. Cook also rested players but brought in some fringe players with Idris being the pick of the team with a mature performance. He has to be given the nod to start against Shrewsbury , he's earned the right to start. If he doesn't then there is little point in playing him in the Micky Mouse cup. Goals for Piggott and Chaplin will be good for confidence but I have to say both looked offside but there again we should've had a penalty.pleased that Nsiala and Woolfenden performed well and again they should be close to a return to the team.
I think the team has had sufficient time to gel. Yes we have many new players but quality players which many are adept very quickly. Wigan have adapted fairly quickly.
No more excuses we have to dig in and get results. Application has to be better.

A good win, some decent game time for some of the fringe players. No matter how far we go in this competition, it doesn't change our disappointing start to the league campaign and that we have no consistency so until this situation improves, Cook and our new squad still have much to prove.

Every club has to deal with injuries, suspensions and COVID. We have 28 first team players and he's moaning because he can't play ALL of them every week. Seriously, weak isn't the word for this BS. At 2-0 give Barry a game, don't leave it til it's pointless him coming on. Kenlock btw who hasn't played a competitive game all season lasted 90mins so that's his game minutes argument put in context.
