Reid Could Reprise Wigan Role at Town
Monday, 11th Oct 2021 14:36

Former England midfielder and Sunderland manager Peter Reid could take up a so-far unspecified position with the Blues, reprising a role from Paul Cook's time at Wigan Athletic.

Reid was at Saturday’s 2-1 home victory against Shrewsbury sitting alongside Blues chief operating officer Luke Werhun and chief executive Mark Ashton, having also been spotted at Town’s defeat at Accrington by the same scoreline the previous week.

Ipswich MP Tom Hunt tweeted that Reid had taken up an advisory position with the club, which is not currently the case.

However, while nothing is yet agreed, talks are ongoing which could see the 65-year-old involved with the Blues in a new role created for him, presumably much like the technical director’s position he was in at Wigan during Town manager Cook’s period in charge of the Latics.

In November 2017, Cook was linked with the Sunderland manager’s job but instead suggested Reid could make a return to Wearside where he enjoyed significant success and outlined how they two worked together.

“I’ve said before I think it’s an absolute crime someone like Peter wasn’t involved in and around a football club,” Cook told Wigan Today

“The experience, the enthusiasm, the knowledge… he was first in this morning, watching videos on Crawley.

“If someone like Sunderland did look to go down that road, I’d be very much for it and I think he’d be fantastic for Sunderland. We talk about football for hours.

“People wondered when Peter arrived what kind of a role he would have. But there was never any specific role. It was just about having Peter in the football club.

“I think the chairman and Peter kick each other in the directors' box when the game’s going on, it’s like that. It’s invaluable having someone like him to bounce off. Every day with Peter you’re learning something.

“I might have been tough on one of the lads, but then you’ll see Peter whispering in his ear later, offering something else. As a football person, I enjoy football people, and Peter is a real football person.”

Cook’s coaching staff is currently made up of first-team coaches Franny Jeffers and Gary Roberts, another coach Ian Craney and keeper-coach John Keeley.

Responding to fans’ suggestions he should appoint an assistant boss during the Blues’ slow start to the season, Cook said: “In football again you’ll always look at stuff and rightly or wrongly questions can be asked, there’s never a problem with that.

“If you look back on my time, previously, all the lads I’ve worked with are all at other clubs working well.

“So when Ipswich Town aren’t doing so well, that will be a natural process. Mark Ashton, our CEO, our board give me every encouragement, our chairman Michael O’Leary, to look at every aspect of what we’re doing and how can we make it better.

“So just for our supporters, we look at the club in the same light, and we think ‘Have we got enough?’.

“If you look back, for example, at Macauley Bonne’s miss at Cheltenham, and I can speak about Macauley. Was that due to my assistant manager not being in the dugout? I don’t really think so.

“If you look at Lee Evans standing on the ball against whoever it was at home and giving the goal away.

“And it’s right what people will do. We’ve got a great belief in making the club better. If we feel it’s something that should happen and experience should come in, I’d be all for it. I’d be all for anything that makes this football club better.

“In my world, the thing that will make this club better is more time, more games together on the pitch and starting winning. And once you do all of those things, people won’t be worried about coaching staff or anything else, and they’ll be enjoying what they see on a football pitch. And in my world, that day is coming.”

Reid has also managed Manchester City, the England U21s, Leeds, Coventry, Thailand, Plymouth and Mumbai City, while he was a player at Bolton, most famously Everton, QPR, Manchester City, Southampton, Notts County and Bury in addition to representing England at the World Cup in 1986.

Seems to be a common theme in football if it goes well the manager gets the credit. If the board gives him loads of money to spend and he wastes it they take the blame.

His initials fit P R = Portman Road. I dont think there is much chance of old legends getting a job here, PC does not seem to want them around the place, i may be wrong but thats how it appears.

I feel this is potentially a good move.

I would welcome this. Our underwhelming start to the season had many of us wondering if PC needed Liam Richardson to assist him. As Steve ITFC Sweden says, PC's inexperienced coaching team are unlikely to question his decisions and even if they do PC is unlikely to be swayed by their views, but Peter Reid has been their and done it and PC obviously respects him.
They could be a great partnership.

As i stated before, during George Burleys time i can remember when the club went through a couple of dodgy patches David Sheepshanks bought in Stewart Houston one season and then John Gorman, both very experienced coaches and things were turned round. The coaching staff at the moment does look a bit inexperienced so why not bring someone in.
As to whether Peter Reid is that man who knows.

Seems like a decent positive move.
If I'm as a technical director, does that role report into the CEO?
If so, can understand that Paul Cook would want the buy in from this appointment and great that he has an existing relationship with Peter Reid.
I'm a supporter of Paul Cook and want him to succeed, I love the attacking intent and entertainment but feel he may need a plan B and C sometimes…
PC has only had maybe 2-3 seasons of Championship football and it will be very handy to call on Peter Reid's Championship and Premier League experience. We can all improve and it's all part of building this successful long term project.
Also get the feeling that Cook is at a slight loss as to how our heads can dip after going a goal up… we need a bit more fight from the likes of Evans, Morsy, Burns and Fraser In my opinion.

PC needs all the help he can get and bounce his ideas off, so why not. Reid does have experience so crack on and lets get back to back league wins. That would be a start.

Brilliant player. I remember watching him when we were a top team and Everton took us apart. Then came the 'Peter Reid peels bananas with his feet' chant. Classic

Tom Hunt MP is a true Conservative, peddling false information.

this is great news ,because of all wigans european cup wins and first division titles/ fa cups etc we will gain a fountain of knowledge ,along with all the cup winning info we gained from the bristol city boys we might be mid table in the 3rd division soon.

Assuming there is some validity in the story, I really wouldn't know if Peter Reid is appropriate for a role that is yet to be specified. Can he deliver what Butcher or Burley seemingly cannot in the eyes of Cook ? I always thought Mick Mills would be good to have around the place with his experience. Perhaps his absence from Cook's thoughts is the reason for his less than complimentary post match analysis of Town's performances in recent games. We revere our past legends but has the game moved on to make their opinions less valid ? Whatever the answer is, Mick Mills would, in my opinion, be a better fit than Reid to whisper words of advice to Cook.

You do all realise that Cook hasn't commented on this right? His talking about Bonne and Evans was from about a month ago and nothing to do with Reid! For me Peter Reid is a top bloke, we talk about wanting football people in the club and you can't get much better.

Bert with respect, Butch is a great bloke, and a legend as a player, but i dont think he would be the man for the job, likewise Burley whom i also have great respect for, a great player and imo was a good manager. As for Mick Mills ,i know he is a town legend, but as a pundit/commentator he has all the talk ,but he is always wise AFTER the event, he is awful to listen to imo, he just is always saying '' he should have ,they should have, he thought ,he thinks , [an amazing power to be able to read a players mind ] He talks the talk but hasnt walked the walk as a manager , RESPECT as a player and captain, but not for me as an assistant to manager. We cant just try to hang on to the past, and players of the past out of loyalty, we have needed change for a long time. Reid may well be the right person, .

Why not?

Paul Cook knows the guy and Peter Read has a lot of football knowledge to tap into, so should be a no brainer if he wants to come on board.

I'm sure he would have Cook's respect and wouldn't be afraid to voice an opinion, just as most of us do watching Ipswich Town!!!

Maybe someone PC will listen to. I still think he needs an assistant more than anything.

At least he may be able to offer a Plan B and you never know Bonne and Lester up front----the dream team!!

Portman terrorist. . Why do some fans, everyone a job is available here, or they think the manager should go, come up with burley and Butcher? Why can't people see that their managerial record(bar burleys 1st 6 years here), have been a total failure. Yet fans still want them back here. And in burleys case some 11 years after his last job, so way out of touch with how the game has changed. Let's get real. Just as all managers do, he's bringing in people he's worked with before, bcse he trusts them. Why is it our fans seem to believe cook is the only manager who does things this way? Or do they just have to have something to moan about

Razor - seriously? Still with the two up front balls? We are just about the top scorers in English football with a poor defensive record to match and you think the answer is ‘bung another striker on!'

Fair comment ‘ dirty ‘. I'm more or less on the same page about past players and whether they can make a decent contribution to the modern game ie we love them to bits but they are probably past their best in reading the game as it is now. In truth I don't know whether Mills or Reid would work. However, with nobody on the coaching staff who has the clout to provide wise counsel to Cook, I do think that our manager needs someone to get in his ear and offer advice.

What on earth is wrong with some of the people on here regarding so called scousers? This is very similar to a form of racism and I for one think it is not the Ipswich Way. I don't support Liverpool, a club I admire and respect but that's it! Let's keep our minds on ITFC and the desire of all genuine supporters that it doesn't matter where our management or players come from because we all want success. Personally I think if PR comes to help PC it might give us an edge over our rivals and what's wrong with that? COYB

I would like to know who's idea this is? Is it Cooks or is it the board? I think Cook is too pally with the players, Reid I can tell you is not I spent time with him when he was at Sunderland, the players were all very respectful to him and referred to him as boss all the time. I don't really see this can do much harm but could do us some good.

i was really enjoying reading these and then i saw Mills' name mentioned as a preference to Peter Reid.

Sweet Jesus i thought i'd read some sh*te on here but that's got to be worst ever, thank God a few of you guys have put the Butcher mills and Burley comments to bed.

Cook needs to be able to talk to people he relates to not some one out of his he history book however well they represented us as players.

This is so depressing. What we don't want is someone who was openly seen as a dinosaur on here on the two occasions he was linked with the managers job. He is a relic of the “jobs for the boys” carousel. We need a good coach who is tactically and technically tuned in. Not someone who's philosophy is very late 80's. It's on though, he's a scouser and Cooks mate.
