Cook Confirms Reid Joining Coaching Team
Friday, 15th Oct 2021 15:05

Town boss Paul Cook has confirmed that former England international and ex-Sunderland manager Peter Reid is joining his coaching team on a consultancy basis.

Reid watched the Blues’ last two matches and at the Shrewsbury game was sitting alongside CEO Mark Ashton and chief operating officer Luke Werhun.

The 65-year-old previously worked alongside Cook at Wigan in a similar role under the title technical director.

“I worked with Peter for three years at Wigan,” Cook told iFollow. “He’s a great guy. In the footballing world, you’ll rarely find someone who is as respected as Peter Reid, not just as a footballer but also what he’s done as a manager.

“Peter coming in is great, not just for me, but the other coaching staff and the club itself. Having people with that amount of experience at a football club can only be good.”

Reid added: “Anywhere I can help I will, and hopefully my experience should bring something new to the set-up.

“If there's something I think will help then I'm never afraid to say it, and I've really enjoyed working with Paul in the past.

“This is a huge football club and I'm really looking forward to being involved, starting with a trip to Fratton Park next Tuesday as I'll be at that one.”

In November 2017, Cook was linked with the Sunderland manager’s job but instead suggested Reid could make a return to Wearside where he enjoyed significant success and outlined how the two were working together at Wigan.

“I’ve said before I think it’s an absolute crime someone like Peter wasn’t involved in and around a football club,” Cook told Wigan Today.

“The experience, the enthusiasm, the knowledge… he was first in this morning, watching videos on Crawley.

“If someone like Sunderland did look to go down that road, I’d be very much for it and I think he’d be fantastic for Sunderland. We talk about football for hours.

“People wondered when Peter arrived what kind of a role he would have. But there was never any specific role. It was just about having Peter in the football club.

“I think the chairman and Peter kick each other in the directors' box when the game’s going on, it’s like that. It’s invaluable having someone like him to bounce off. Every day with Peter you’re learning something.

“I might have been tough on one of the lads, but then you’ll see Peter whispering in his ear later, offering something else. As a football person, I enjoy football people, and Peter is a real football person.”

In addition to Sunderland, Reid has also managed Manchester City, the England U21s, Leeds, Coventry, Thailand, Plymouth and Mumbai City, while he was a player at Bolton, most famously Everton, QPR, Manchester City, Southampton, Notts County and Bury in addition to representing England at the World Cup in 1986.

Could be a great appointment to the club, the only thing that worries me is that he won't have any specific job title, am I reading that right?
Really hope it's not just a job for a mate.

Welcome aboard Peter and lets hope you can introduce that killer instinct into our game

Excellent appointment I trust. Just the kind of old hand that's needed to steady a fairly inexperienced coaching and support team.

Can't any of you remember how horrified we all were when he was in the running for the Town job? He was seen as a relic in football terms more than a decade ago. He's hardly going to be adding a progressive voice. His Sunderland side were attacking but very much welly welly. He's about as sophisticated in football terms as a penny farthing in the Tour de France. Cook needs an experienced voice but one who's not out of touch.

Oh, I forgot he's cooks mate and a scouser. All the qualifications you need to get a job here now.

Does nothing for me. What has he achieved as a manager? Not much! Time will tell.

As a consultant overlooking things he will see the way our coaches work(some of whom don't seem to instil confidence) and assess their input also on the park as well with his experience and knowledge his appointment is a no brainer and he will(after the magic Mr Ashton who i'm sure has made this possible) will be our best off field signing and before long assistant manager.

Couldn't we have got burley, butcher or osman in as the experienced head ?

I welcome Paul Reid's imput but as part of the coaching team Paul Cook must be his boss. I would rather he had a Director of Football role reporting directly to Mark Ashton.

Last time I looked this was Division 3. Its not rocket science.
Get the defence organised
Get Fitter
Get the ball moving forward quicker to our creative players, get players in the box
With that we will create chances and with the players we have we will win most games

No charge for my consultancy there.

Seems very sensible. The coaches below PC are obviously a little green on the coaching front, so Reid will be a good ear for PC to turn to from time to time. Welcome Peter. I hope you are part of our upcoming success story.

No, it has to be a scouser Stocktractor. You should know the management rules by now.

Better Peter Reid than Joey Jones. He may instill a mean streak in the team and he could be sinical in his day.

But what does this “consultancy” really mean ?
Is he Cooks right hand man , or Ashtons? Or O'Leary's ? Or is he more to do with the academy …. The Role just seems a bit vague . Is he a kind of Director of Football ?

I think the main skill set brought by Reid is he's a scouser. Yes he's an experienced football man but surely there are more current individuals out there. Jobs for mates. Butcher needs to work on speaking Scouse. Hopefully this will be a success but I'm slightly cynical

Don't see the need for any negativity here. He's here in a consultancy role, not the manager. He won't be dictating style of play, more enhancing the way PC wants us to play and surely nobody can argue that its not an entertaining style? Arnie, maybe he could have input in all of the areas you mention? Mickmillstash, we're doing those things already aren't we? Goals are not the issue. It may be "div 3" but its not Mickey Mouse, jumpers for goalposts stuff anymore. Many games were postponed recently due to internationals which indicates the upturn in the quality of this league over recent years. It's littered with a mix of wealthy clubs that have been on the slide over recent years (such as us) and small but very ambitious clubs that find themselves at the highest level in their history. For me, Reids experience and knowledge are most welcome.

I don't have a problem with Reid but I would like to have seen an experienced coach appointed that would be alongside Cook on the touchline. Feel he needs someone to advise him during matches when things are not going well.
Good to see another wise football head sitting on Reid's right (left as we look) in the form of Peter Over in the Director's Box.

How can anyone rate this as a progressive move by the Club? Reid has managed to complete just 1 full season (Plymouth Argyle 2010/2011) during the past 20 years.

He has clearly been unable to add anything of value during this time. If he had, he would obviously have been managing himself.

He's done nothing since his days at Sunderland. In fact I bet he will be going on and on about the success he had there. Come on. He is a dinosaur, and a mate of Cook.

You'd look for our own Legends to add value based on experience, but Peter Reid. Pointless appointment, which will add zero value.
