Town Draw Oldham at Home in FA Cup
Sunday, 17th Oct 2021 13:26

Town have drawn League Two Oldham Athletic at home in the first round of the FA Cup.

The clubs have drawn one another in the FA Cup twice previously, in 1953/54 and 1963/64, both in round three.

On the first occasion the teams drew 3-3 at Portman Road - Neil Myles, Billy Reed and Tom Garneys the scorers - before the Blues won 1-0 away in the replay via a Garneys goal.

And in 1964 Town won 6-3 at home - the scoreline having been 5-2 at half-time - with Gerry Baker hitting a hat-trick and Danny Hegan two after Joe Broadfoot had given the Blues an early lead.

The most recent meeting between the sides was a 4-0 Town victory in the second tier in April 1997 when Mick Stockwell, Geraint Williams, Neil Gregory and James Scowcroft were on the scoresheet.

The Latics are currently 21st in the fourth tier but beat Stevenage 3-0 at home yesterday.

The tie will see centre-halves George Edmundson and Cameron Burgess play against one of their former clubs, the latter having spent time on loan at Boundary Park while with Fulham.

The 40 first-round ties will be played over the weekend of Saturday 6th November.

Last year Town were beaten 3-2 by Portsmouth in the first round at Portman Road.

Two seasons ago the Blues defeated Lincoln City 1-0 in a first round replay, ending their 15-match winless run in the competition stretching back to January 2010, before losing 2-1 to Coventry in a second round replay at home having drawn 1-1 at St Andrew’s.

Elsewhere, AFC Sudbury drew Colchester United at home.

Another chance for Cuckoo to pick a reserve XI, go out feebly to lower league opposition & then say "the team I picked should have been good enough to win the game".

Could be worse: this is winnable, and lots of previous links, e.g. Ian Marshall, Joe Royle. COYB let's go on a run!!

Time to just concentrate on the Cup - ‘cos, let's face it, anything from the league is becoming a rapidly fading dream! Groundhog manager, groundhog team……. But recognise I should resist becoming over optimistic😜

As we've proven over recent years, it doesn't matter what league or league position our opponents are in, we can't take a win for granted so really hope Cook plays a very strong side so that Oldham don't become the next in a very long line of lower league teams to dump us out of the cup.

What a great draw for Oldham. PC will change all 11 players from our previous game, we will play with no cohesion and fail to match Oldham's desire resulting in yet another early cup exit.

I suspect the under 12s might get the nod for this one as the under 9s will be playing the following Tuesday against col who in the pizza cup which incidentally may get moved if Sudbury are on tv on the Sunday or Monday.

Perhaps AFC Sudbury can switch their tie with Colchester to Portman Road, and we can all go and see that match instead and support Sudbury, for a treat!!!!

Jesus the hysteria on this page gets worse.
Whatever 11 we pick will likely be stronger than Oldham.
Will we win? Let's wait and see.
Stop flouncing.

Another cup game where we throw the towel in . Won't bother with this one. I know Cook will pick a team that on paper looks good enough to win but the problem is it's another line up that probably hasn't played together before.

ive always liked the FA cup comp but for last decade or so the club just seems to have no interest in silverware , Cups have been treated as a nuisance because promotion is the aim . Well thats gone well hasnt it !. Idont see fans of other clubs moaning because they are having a good cup run ,I dont see the fans turning up at Wembley in tears because they have made a final !Come on ITFC, LETS HAVE A GO, we dont seem to have any real desire to do well despite the new owners , still no real passion , no grit, no balls. The fans deserve more than weve had over recent years, too long apathy has been the clubs strong [point .

Surely even our 2nd 11 should be good enough ?
Need a Cup run to maintain interest as no chance of promotion, and also to give more games to all the squad ?
But wait , I can hear it already , Town 2-0 up at half time , 2-2 draw as usual , and defeat away after scoring first . Sound familiar ?

Please Paul Cook play your BEST team for this match. No chopping and changing players to save them for the next league game. We didn't win the FA Cup and UEFA Cup by changing our team for the cup competitions. The team will only get better if the same best players play week in week out.

I'm gutted with that draw as I was really hoping we were going to pull one of the big boys out of the hat such as Pontefract Collieries, Corinthian Casuals, Folkestone Invicta or Bowers & Pitsea!

Won 6-3 with Gerry Baker scoring a hat trick

Not really bothered who we get can't get excited about town at the minute.
It will be a great game Sudbury vs Col U. Kind of a derby game, they are not far away from each other at all.

carlisleaway - wasn't the 6-3 game played in thick fog and from behind the goal you could only see as far as halfway? Fans are said to have had no idea of the score at the end!

What a miserable bunch you lot are on here, moan, drip, moan. I have supported Town for over 60 years, love watching games, love football, never supported anyone else. Life's not that bad guys, come on cheer up, enjoy your football and have a laugh or two and a beer after the games. You only come this way once and moaning helps nobody, least of all yourself.

Might as well put the Ladies team out for a game. They have more balls than the men we have signed and that includes the moron in charge. Cook out now!!!!!!!

The two most depressing clubs in the EFL. Guaranteed to be 0-0 in both the home game and inevitable replay.
