Butcher: This Lot Need Sorting Out Big-Time
Thursday, 16th Dec 2021 08:51

Blues legend Terry Butcher says Town need to appoint a new permanent manager very quickly because “this lot need sorting out big-time”.

The former Blues and England skipper was at last night's dismal 2-0 FA Cup defeat working as a pundit for ITV4.

After the game a fuming Butcher said: “Well, [CEO] Mark Ashton has got to get a manager in very, very quickly because this lot need sorting out big-time.

“That's two games against Barrow, a League Two club, and no goals. Ipswich are conceding goals left, right and centre and they don't look like scoring any. So there is a lot of work to do.

“It's a long journey home for the players and then it's Sunderland on Saturday. Then it's Gillingham away, Wycombe at home and Lincoln at home. There are some big games coming up.

“It's their futures. They have got to know that a manager is looking at them and he may be making decisions on one or two based on that performance. That simply wasn't good enough.

Quizzed on what calibre of manager Town can attract, Butcher reflected: “It doesn't matter about them being the right calibre. We just need a guy to come in and rumble them up and just say 'Look, you are playing for your futures here, you may be on good money, you may be at a big club’.

“But we're not a big club anymore. We're a small club really when you think about how far we've sunk.

“You can talk about this and that in the past, but it's not the past that matters. It's the present. And the present at the moment isn't good enough.”

Looking ahead to Saturday and the unveiling of the statue of Butcher’s boyhood hero and then later friend and team-mate Kevin Beattie, he added: "It will be [a great occasion]. I don't know what The Beat would make of this, I'll tell you that now.

"He normally used to forecast a 3-1 win for Ipswich Town every game [on BBC Radio Suffolk's Life’s a Pitch], but we'd be lucky to concede just one at the minute and and we certainly wouldn't be scoring three playing like that. So yes, he wouldn't be happy.”

Money is the main reason the players came to ITFC
A decent manager can get more out of this lot than Cook or McGreal by organising the defence (where was Panny last night?) and making them work harder but whether that will be good enough I'm not sure.

If you look at the two Barrow goals, in each case the scorer was unmarked, in plenty of space.

In the second half KVY put two superb crosses into their box, but there were no Town players anywhere near to stick the ball in.

So we have a team that isn't interested in basic defending or goal scoring.

I accept that under ME and Paul Lambert we were in trouble and change was needed.

The nature of the project was flawed. Paul Cook did not have a pre-season with many of the players. Also, waving a cheque book around will bring in players, but if they are only here for the money, what then?

From the moment the lineup was announced last night it was going to be an embarrassing night. Play your strongest team and win the game. This is why the FA Cup has become a Mickey Mouse Competition. Very few club are really interested in winning it and treat it as a practice game for second string players.

Mark Ashton and his recruiting skills could be the real problem here?

I really don't know what to say. Lowest point in the club's history for me.
Next Manager has a b***** hard job on his hands. I'm torn currently between somebody like Pulis, Allardyce to somebody the players would probably be in awe of like Lampard or Terry. Can't see any big name being tempted to come and try and manage this lot. No matter the payday they would receive.

Packwoodblue; Allardyce is unlikely to come, especially after that performance! I used to live near Stoke and Stoke fans told me that Pulis a) wants total control of a club (which we are unlikely to give) and b) plays long ball football (at least we wouldn't need to sign midfielders!). Lampard probably thinks that he is too good for League One. Terry might be a viable option IF he comes with an experienced assistant.

Not a fan of him in the past, but in the current circumstances I'd consider hiring Warnock until the end of the season, see where that takes us and then plan to apt permanent long-term successor after that. There may be better selection of quality candidates available then than the names mentioned currently and Warnock would at least shake this shower up and not take any sh#t from them - give your all and sweat for the club or FO!!!

If we could tempt Warnock to come and sort this lot out (though I find him quite detestable), it might just be the best bit of business MA could do this season.

He certainly wouldn't take any crap from any prima donnas and would rule the players with an iron fist, demand respect and expect nothing short of 100% effort and application. He would also know which formation suits the players at his disposal at any given time... something we've lacked for a while now.

He's arrogant, abrasive, opinionated and as egotistical as Brian Clough was... perhaps just what we need!

I can't believe that of the players at the club we don't have a starting eleven with the right attitude and ability levels. Plenty welcomed this carpet bombing of the squad because apparently last seasons squad had the wrong attitude and weren't good enough….New
Manager, new coaches, new owners and new players and we are far worse than under Lambert.

I feel sorry for Paul Cook after last nights performance how many of you out there now think that all 19 players where picked by PC. To me a manager does not make 19 mistakes in one hit. Some of these players IMO were brought in over his head. I could be wrong after the sterling work our CEO has already put into the club, But that is the feeling I get. Our only standout players at the moment are: Walton, Burns, Chaplin.

Too many Limp Wrists and No Rollocks.
Barrow players would be lucky to be on a third of the Salaries these failures are on.
