Town Confirm Bakinson Loan Signing
Thursday, 20th Jan 2022 16:58

Town have completed the signing of Bristol City midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson on loan for the rest of the season with the Blues having the option to make the move permanent in the summer.

The 23-year-old, who will wear the number 12 shirt, is delighted to join Town having been impressed by the ambition at Portman Road.

He is the Blues' second signing of the January window after keeper Christian Walton, whose loan from Brighton was turned into a permanent switch yesterday.

“It’s a massive club which is going in the right direction, so I’m buzzing to be a part of it,” Bakinson told the club site. “Everyone at the club is very ambitious so it’s definitely something I’m very excited about.

“I’m a hard-working player who likes to get on the ball. I’m a box-to-box midfielder and hopefully I’ll get a goal or two. I want to play as many games as I can and help the team as much as possible.”

Manager Kieran McKenna added: “It was really important that we kept Christian Walton and Macauley Bonne at the club. Once we had done that, we knew that we would look at some areas in the squad to see where we may be able to strengthen or add depth.

“Tyreeq is a versatile midfielder who can play across the pitch and cover a number of positions. He offers us something different and is at an age where he has lots of years ahead to improve further.

“We really like Tyreeq as a player. He’s young, hungry, athletic and technical. He is fit and has played plenty of games already this season, so it won’t take him long to get up to speed.

“He needs to meet the group and settle, but it shouldn’t be long before we see him in action.”

Blackpool and Hull City are also understood to have shown interest in Bakinson but with the Robins preferring central midfielder to join a club outside the Championship.

London-born Bakinson came through the youth ranks at Luton before joining City - where Town CEO Mark Ashton was then in charge - in October 2017 having made four senior starts and two sub appearances for the Hatters.

Since then Bakinson has made 33 starts and 20 sub appearances, scoring five times, while also spending spells out on loan at Newport County in 2018/19 and Plymouth Argyle in the second half of the following campaign.

Towards the end of last year, the Robins activated an additional one-year option in his contract in order to protect their asset taking his deal to the summer of 2023.

Bakinson is Town’s fourth current loan player - alongside Bersant Celina from Dijon, Macauley Bonne from QPR and Hayden Coulson from Middlesbrough - with Walton having signed on a permanent basis and Louie Barry returning to Aston Villa earlier in the month.

Ipswichbusiness Celina has a season-long loan without a break clause as does Coulson, so it's not a priority to do anything with them.

We have him until the end of the season, so plenty of time for him to impress the manager and plenty of time for a long term decision to be made. What's not to like? What another manager says about him really doesn't matter, as he has a chance to show another club/manager that he is worth a place in the team.
Welcome Tyreeq, I hope this is the start of a new chapter of your career.

Not interested in a word Nigel Pearson has to say. Good opportunity for the player so hopefully it works out for player and Town!

The priority should be to bring in another centre half.
Ironically ex Bristol City's Aden Flint, now at Cardiff would be a good shout.Still only 32,sold to Middlesbrough for 77million in 2018 and he's out of contract in the summer.

Welcome Tyreeq. Let's see what you can do in a Town shirt before making any judgements.

Sounds like sour grapes from Pearson who is a bit grumpy sometimes. Obviously a clash and a fresh start is probably what was required.

Not played masses of football for his age, but hopefully will be a good addition.

Good luck to him.

Interesting that he describes himself as box-to-box. What does this mean for the other CMs?

Interesting, will be intrigued where this leaves us with the plethora of other players we have as midfield options.Good to see one or two moving out, squad is a bit lumpy still, need to thin it out more

‘Wants to play, on his own terms' ????
Much to prove Mr Bakinson.
If this doesn't work - we had been warned.
Some ‘hissy fits' again I notice - over a Player with much to prove, and not exactly a ‘track record holder' …… We'll see !!!!

Is Ashton choosing and doing the signing of Players, and General Recruitment ?? - if that's the case I cannot personally see McKenna being content with that fo too long.
Certain things do not bode well, as yet, at our Club.

I hope Harper Edwards have not been prematurely written off by the club. Harper struggled but he was playing in the early games where the whole team was a shambles. He seems to have taken a large share of the blame for that and Evans came through relatively unscathed even though he was a prime culprit in afew of the early awful results.

Anyway, welcome Ty

Anyone coming in starts with a clean slate and deserves a chance to impress. If he does the business on the pitch we will all love him.

Some people need to give their heads a little wobble, Why would Ashton bring in a rubbish player with attitude who KM didn't want???

Pearson sounds a bit like cook publicly condemning players!
I say give the guy a chance, after all, I along with most Itfc fans know nothing about this guy!

Has a decent goal scoring record for a defensive midfielder so describing himself as box to box might not be unreasonable. At the very least he may be a threat from set pieces.
I really like the 'loan with the option to sign' approach personally, best of both worlds.

It's clear to me that a few of Cooks signings are not good enough. But as shown by our failure to go on a decent run, it's a difficult league to get out of.
Celina & Edwards have talent but still remain luxury players.

Was expecting McKenna would be given licence to pluck 1 or 2 youth starlets from the Manchester United academy or elsewhere (given his knowledge, contacts and experience in that regard). While Barry didn't work out you'd expect a very talented 18-year old should be able to make an impact in league one if they have enough pedigree and potential. I'm not talking just any old academy players, I'm talking the sort that standout and are expected to have a bright future in the game. That said, Norwich had Harry Kane on loan and he barely got a game!

Let's give the lad a chance . This is an area where we need improvement but like others I'm surprised that Harper isn't being considered.
I echo what others have said regarding Ashton and his involvement in the transfer. If he used his influence to get a player who KMK wanted that's fine, however if he is choosing players then that is an issue. I have faith in the coaching staff and manager whereas under Cook I had no faith in their unprofessional approach. Three points Saturday
