McKenna: Not Impossible For Simpson to Break Into the Squad
Friday, 18th Feb 2022 16:29

Blues boss Kieran McKenna says he had a chat young striker Tyreece Simpson this week and says it’s not impossible that the 20-year-old could break into the first team squad in the remaining months of the season.

Simpson was recalled from his loan at Swindon in January having scored 11 times for the Robins with discussions regarding a new Town contract understood to be ongoing with his current terms running to the summer but with the Blues having an option for a further season.

"Asked how the striker has been getting on in training since his return, McKenna said: “He’s trained with us in certain sessions, he’s also been playing some U23s games because we felt it was important for him to get some games when he came back from loan to keep his match fitness, so he’s been working between the two groups at the moment.

“I’ve had a chat with Tyreece this week because it’s not impossible for him to break into the squad. He has to do well in the U23 games and he has to stand out in the training sessions when he comes with us.

“I’ve obviously not had a chance to watch him live on too many occasions. I’ve not had a chance to watch him live on too many occasions, I’ve seen his clips from Swindon but he’s a player I’m still getting to know better on the pitch in terms of his qualities and also getting to know him off the pitch better.

“He’s like everyone else in the building, it’s up to him to go and put in performances. When he gets the chance to train with the first team to go and make an impression, and when he plays in U23s games to make an impression in those and stake a case and a claim to be deserving of more minutes in the first team.”

“Not impossible”; the double negative is meaningless.

@Ipswichbusiness No it's not meaningless at all. It means that it's possible.

Again, very clear and well thought comments from Mr McKenna. Putting the onus onto Tyreece to show his ambition and commitment like everyone else, just what we want to see.

Wickets; you mean “there”.

It has meaning and sits in a spectrum of chance:
impossible, unlikely, improbable, not impossible, probable, likely, guaranteed.

and not guaranteed of course, after not impossible.

I'd say his chance will only come this season if play offs become impossible. Not a time to take a chance otherwise.

Simple he will be given a chance when McKenna thinks he's ready and he's the best Judge.

So Mr Simpson, are you up to the challenge ?

Reading between the lines it sound like he needs to do a good deal more to impress the manager.

All I take from this is that everyone has a shot. Work hard, prove yourself and chances will come. Good management. End of

Just wait, Kieran puts him on the bench tomorrow after starting Jackson ....and KM will have a good reason to do so ....!!!...

What good reason would that be ?

From our current crop of out and out forwards, we currently have only Pigott contracted beyond June. Its simply good sense to think about that now as it helps shape your thinking on Bonne, Norwood and Jackson, all of whom offer something but none of them are 100% obviously going to be his first choices to stay next season. Simpson will no doubt get a deal, who we sign in the summer is something us fans will have no perception of yet, but I bet KM and MA have their targets, and they wont be L1 level journeymen either.
Big picture thinking for sure....

muhrensleftfoot: I somehow think you are right. Reading between the lines, does Simpson have a bit of an attitude problem? Is he unhappy to have been called back from Swindon? By the way, I accept this is speculation on my part, and I may be very far of the mark. I hope he does well and cements a place in the first team.

I find this a bit frustrating and we have seen it before------this guy was banging the goals in at Swindon which is why I guess we re-called him as it seemed to be the perfect example of the system working.

Why then freeze him out and at the very least not put him on the bench? I have heard rumours of contracts and agents-----is there more to this than meets the eye?

"So long as our strikers keep failing to score" being the reason why it's possible, I'd posit.

It's rather embarrassing that out of Bonne, Norwood, Pigott, and Jackson none of them have been able to really justify a starting spot as of late.

Muhrensleftfoot is right: you would normally expect to read ‘has done well in training', ‘has done well in the U23s' I hope he's not sulking. He had a massive chance coming back from Swindon as our four main strikers have failed to produce despite their efforts. A big lad like Tyreece would give us a different dimension and a target for the others to feed off.
