McKenna: Too Early to Be Thinking Too Far Ahead on Contracts
Thursday, 7th Apr 2022 15:10

Town manager Kieran McKenna says it’s too early to speak to out of contract or loan players about their futures.

Striker Kayden Jackson is in talks regarding a new contract with his current terms up in the summer, while youngster Tyreece Simpson - whose deal is also coming to an end but with the club having an option for another year - has turned down an offer made to him in January with discussions believed to be ongoing. But McKenna says no one else has so far been spoken to.

James Norwood, Sone Aluko and Tom Carroll are among those whose deals are up in June with the club having a year’s option for Norwood and Aluko, while Bersant Celina, Macauley Bonne, Tyreeq Bakinson and Dominic Thompson are all on loan.

Tomas Holy, Bailey Clements, Brett McGavin and Myles Kenlock, on loan at Port Vale, Stevenage, King's Lynn and Colchester respectively, are also out of contract and look set to move on in the summer.

“We haven’t communicated anything with the players next, those decisions and those discussions are still to take place in the future,” McKenna said.

“There are still five games left, to me that feels like a lot of points still on the table and it’s too early to be thinking too far ahead to next year.

“Obviously there’s a lot of work going on in the background, there’s a lot of discussions and we’re making plans and putting things in place for the summer but in terms of the immediate playing group and and immediate staff group, I think we owe it to the supporters more than anyone to try and finish off the season strongly to give them some good days and some good results and performances to enjoy.

“That’s certainly the immediate focus and the future and the summer and next season, that can wait for a few weeks down the line.”

Not too early to have decided who else is going. Bonne back, Norwood, Pigott sold,, Carroll, Got a feeling Bakinson will sign , especially with Evan's injuries. El Miz on loan. Edwards to train as Burns deputy so possibly Vincent-Young gone too.

Need at least three forwards unless Simpson suddenly appears, looks likely he will be sold too.

Yep definitely not too early to make these decisions and look forward to next season, because all our focus should be on next season now.

Measured, considered ,circumspect and wisely cautious at this stage is our man – with absolutely no need to upset any apple carts nor disturb the equilibrium amongst the playing group .
HIS own close team will undoubtedly be very aware of their plan for the close season and next season and we supporters have no need to worry on this score .

Talking about contracts....
Number 17 on the squad list is some one named Ed Sheeran and he hasn't yet played a game or even been on the bench. Surely he must be the list of players to depart the club as the savings of his salary will help the clubs finances.
He hasn't even played in the mickey mouse cups either.
Perhaps he's not showing enough in training? Who knows? But McKenna must see something in him otherwise he would have been let go.

Hopefully the contracts of these players will not be renewed:

Macauley Bonne, Tyreeq Bakinson and Dominic Thompson

I'm not sure that Ed Sheeran is available to play, apparently Neymar has accused him of copyright over his latest stepover?

I'm not sure that ALL out focus should be on next year. We could potentially finish with 79 points. If it turns out that 6th place is claimed with 78 points (Which is not likely but probably a 3 to 1 bet) then being on the beach now would be criminal. before the last game most people said we needed to win 5 of our last 6 to have a chance. We now need to win 5 out of 5 and even then it's a less than 50/50 chance but it's buying a ticket rather than giving up.

Jackson Bakinson Aluko Celina stay, Simpson option taken up, all the others will be gone
KM says it's too early to talk to players, he doesn't say he hasn't decided.
Markchips is pretty much spot on, LB CF recruitment is key, but there will be more out than in. Humphreys and Baggot deserve full time 1st team squad next season, but quality recruitment is key over quantity.
One of the interesting things will be Norwood, on 8k a week, that frees up a lot of financial capacity within the cap rules….
