Aluko Triggers One-Year Option
Tuesday, 26th Apr 2022 13:20

TWTD understands forward Sone Aluko has made enough appearances to trigger the one-year option on his Town contract.

The 33-year-old joined the Blues last summer on a free transfer after leaving Reading and signed a one-year contract which included an option for a further season if he made a set number of league appearances.

We understand that he has now hit that target, automatically triggering the additional year on his deal.

Former Nigerian international Aluko has enjoyed an impressive first season with the Blues, making 22 starts (18 in the league) and 14 sub appearances, scoring three times.

"Speaking to TWTD in February prior to reaching his appearance milestone, Aluko said he hoped to remain with Town having enjoyed his first season at Portman Road.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here, I’ve enjoyed my performances here,” he said. “So I’d be happy to stay and we’ll see what happens on that front.”

Aluko looks set to miss Town’s end-of-season home game against Charlton Athletic on Saturday having suffered a knee injury at Rotherham recently.

Manager Kieran McKenna said last week he will meet with his players at the end of this week to discuss who is staying and who will be moving on or made available.

While it's known that striker Kayden Jackson is in talks regarding a new contract with his current terms ending in the summer, James Norwood and Tom Carroll are among those whose deals are also up in June with the club having a year’s option for Norwood.

Tomas Holy, Bailey Clements, Brett McGavin and Myles Kenlock, on loan at Port Vale, Stevenage, King's Lynn and Colchester respectively, are also out of contract and are set to move on.

As reported last week, Town have taken the one-year option on striker Ben Morris’s deal, while Tyreece Simpson has told the club he wants to depart with his deal ending this summer but with the club having a year's option.

Bersant Celina, Macauley Bonne, Tyreeq Bakinson and Dominic Thompson are all on loan.

Meanwhile, Town have sold nearly 24,000 tickets for the visit of the Addicks on Saturday.

Bert - No, it's Tuesday today, not Sunday.

If you're referring to the Charlton game, that will be on Saturday at 12.30pm.

Pleased about this. Sone may not have scored or made assists this season but he has provided some great moments with his close ball control and he has been unfortunate that a lot of his work has gone unrewarded due to striker failings. Obviously he won't play every game or indeed last many 90 mins but the time he does spend on the field will not be wasted. In addition our younger players can learn a lot from his vast experience and from what I've read about him, he is keen to pass this knowledge on.
24000 tickets already sold for what is basically an end of season kick about. Amazing supporters we have. Let's hope that whichever players are selected, they put on a good show for their fans and send us all home with a win and dare I say it, a few goals

An experienced professional and he's played reasonably well whenever called upon so I'm happy enough with this.

I'm happy with this; quality player, great professional, excellent senior player to have around for the younger players to watch & get advice from, and a thoroughly decent guy by all accounts.
The headline kind of makes it seem as though he has decided to take up a contractual option open to him; but in reality it is the Club that has triggered the additional year by 'allowing' the manager play him in the required number of games that made it automatic.
We saw last season, with Alan Judge, that decisions can be made to deny a player the opportunity to trigger the clause, so as to allow the contract run down, even though Judge had been in his best form of the season at the time he was told he wouldn't play for the club again.
He may not have scored that many this season, but he has always been a goal threat throughout his career & will continue to cause defences problems at this level. With the right center forward to link up with, he could be a very dangerous attacker next season.

He was one of the signings I wasn't too sure about initially but he's turned out better than several of the other ones I was hoping for more from!

Midas - exactly- I wasn't sure at the time but he has proven to be a skilful player and an important one too! Glad he is getting another year!

With his excellent passing ability I'm disappointed that McKenna didn't try playing him alongside Morsey in some of our home games especially but also in some of the away games against teams that sat deep against us.

Pleased to see Sonne having another year, at 33 he's never going to play every game but he is always so positive, never goes missing in a game and has been a real asset going forward

Good, he deserves it frankly !

He is an interesting one, rather keep him than Carroll.
But never got a run in the side & other than the Cambridge game away hasn't contributed much.
But brings experience

Played well, really well at times, but not trusted to keep his place. Glad he is staying but fully expect better and younger players to come in to the Club in his position, so back up and mentoring role for a really good pro next season.

Am I missing something here? The fans responses seem to assume he's staying but surely the automatic triggering of an extension does not mean that, does it? It seems likely he will stay but that is not yet inevitable - the club may want to his salary for someone else. See sentence above: 'Manager Kieran McKenna said last week he will meet with his players at the end of this week to discuss who is staying and who will be moving on or made available.'

Super, quality player. No-brainer to keep him for at least one more year. Top man Sone.

Olive R16. Of course it means he's staying. Unless of course another club was to make an offer for him that we decided to accept. Think that's unlikely tho.
Portman terrorist. No, its not that he wasnt trusted to have a run in the team. Simply, bcse of his age, he couldn't play every game. His game time had to be managed.
Good thing for us. Will no doubt be a good influence to have around, for the younger players, regardless of how much game time he gets

24K attendance for a dead rubber … wow! Impressive.

Pleased about Aluko. Adds options to the squad.

Well it seems everyone is expecting many comings and goings - so, yet another reset to Zero seems on the cards - and if we don't get ‘all these players' in early doors, I guess people will be saying, once again, they need ‘to Gell' …. come August !!!
Nothing much changes at Portman Road unfortunately in reality, other than many personnel … !!!
Let's hope that Negative trait changes THIS SUMMER into a Positive.

Aluko is a cultured player - a player who needs equally cultured players around him.
Older of course next season, but has enough experience and game knowledge to do a sound job still.
Certainly in Div 3 - but he is a level above that without doubt.

This gets a thumbs up from me. Brings experience, leadership and something a bit different to the other players in the squad.

He wants to be here as stated in his previous posts at 33 he is not going to start all games but with his experience and skill will be a great asset coming on for the last 20 mins or so,
i think he has been a good signing.

Very exciting player. It will be interesting to see how he gets on after a full pre-season. 33 is no age these days if you can avoid injuries.
