Bonne: An Honour to Put on the Blue Shirt
Wednesday, 4th May 2022 10:33

Striker Macauley Bonne has said his goodbyes as his loan spell with his hometown club from QPR comes to an end.

The 26-year-old returned to Town last summer, 12 years after being released as an academy schoolboy.

The former North Stand regular fulfilled a lifelong dream by representing the Blues and made a terrific start to the season, netting 11 goals by November 2nd.

However, the season became tougher from there and the former Chantry High School pupil netted only once more before the end of the campaign. In total, he made 33 starts and 14 sub appearances, scoring those 12 goals.

Writing on Instagram, Bonne said: “Firstly I’d like to thank everyone involved with Ipswich Town for making me feel so welcomed from start to finish.

“It has always been a dream of mine to play for my boyhood club the club I’ve supported my whole life and it was an absolute honour to put the blue shirt on every single time and play in front of the incredible fans at Portman Road.

“Who knows what the future may bring but for now this is where it ends for me 💙🤍 UPPA TOWN!”

Bonne has another year left on his QPR contract with the West Londoners having an option for a further season.

As reported, striker James Norwood has been told he will not be required for next season and it seems likely that manager Kieran McKenna will look to bring in a number fresh faces as he looks to revitalise his attack over the summer.

McKenna met with his players at the end of last week with Town close to making announcements on the outcome of those discussions.

In addition to Norwood, TWTD revealed last week that midfielder Tom Carroll is also being released.

Good lad and shame but inevitable that we want to aim higher with good budgets and a sloghtly smaller squad im expecting a higher profile than MB coming in this role

There must be a great player in there somewhere. Depending on what wages he would be on, he might be worth bringing in on the cheap.

Thankyou for that incredible start of season form ! And the efforts you put in after that ! If nothing else happens its nice that your dream to play for ipswich came true :) ( id get him in if the deal was cheap as hes played well recently and got some assists too)
Good luck in the future MB

I for one would welcome him back here on a permanent deal irrespective of his loss of form, its always a privilege and something so special to see one of our own putting on the shirt, someone whom has that 100% understanding of who we are and at 26 there is still so much room for improvement, Thank you Macca we could all see your love and passion as its truly the same as ours, hope to see you back next season!!

It's only MB and BC out of our loanees I would love us to sign, maybe if we had TB for longer he may have been a choice as he was getting better all the time! Can't help but start to get excited when thinking of when we will know whom KM is after for next season.

For "nostalgic" reasons I'd like him to stay in the hope his early season form returns, but purely on technical and current form I'd be sad if he didn't return but would understand if statistically a stronger striker with a higher and more consistent return was brought in.
Shame there has to be a choice but has to be done for the team if we want to move up the leagues.
Thanks for the many happy memories (and goals) MB and hope to see you back at PR in some capacity in the future.

Personally I'd love to see Bonne be offered a deal. There is lots of underestimated value in a players passion and desire to play for their home club, and for that value alone he's worth a contract in my opinion. We forget that Macca had (and still has probably) some personal issues off the pitch, which he disclosed a few months back. Those issues about difficulties in trying to start a family with long term partner, also go to show a level of maturity and stability that will also define a balanced individual going forward. For me, all these attributes combined (and with the talent he does have) are what you want in any employee - we don't want a team full of wildcards, spoiled kids and individuals, we need that balance and leadership mentality going forward, which is why I'd like to see him stay.

Also, maybe Macca should/could consider changing his role as a play (do people still do that?), maybe he'd be a better midfielder???

Either way, thanks Macca, I really hope to see you back!

If only those goals hadn't dried up!

Wish him well for whatever he goes on to do, but I don't think he is the one for us.

Absolutely gutted about this, I think we should absolutely keep him here.

He can score goals, that's for sure and I really hoped that he would be doing it in our colours.

Good luck Macaulay, thanks for some wonderful memories and let's hope you are back here later in your career!

A true blue!

Scoring goals or not, he always worked hard and did his best and it is obvious he has a real love for Town. His confidence went from hero to zero sadly and if we are to move forward we need a regular goalscorer. I would like to wish him well and thank him for some great memories, especially his role in Conor's goal against Sheffield Wednesday, sneaking up behind the goalkeeper, it had me smiling for weeks afterwards.

All the best mate.

Just a few more goals second half of the season and who knows.
Very unselfish player totally committed to ITFC, decent touch, pace and vision just the goals for some reason dried up

Have him back in a heartbeat, need someone with his enthusism around, even as a squad player.

There's truth in what you say & in an ideal world we would sign him, he'd overcome his problems, play the whole of next season like he started the one just gone, & bang in 25 goals for us. But the reality is that MB is unreliable and we can't afford to misfire again for large parts of next season; I don't say that to be mean or be dismissive of his undoubted qualities, but he has a history of blowing hot & cold even before he came to us and his inability to stay onside (which was even an issue when he was scoring early on) is frustrating beyond belief.
If we were to sign him now, and I accept that the fee & wages would be far less that we might have expected last October, it would mean that we won't then be signing someone else as a starting striker, and I feel that KMcK will have a couple of options at the ready, who would fit better into the side he wants to put out next season.
We play one up front, with runners coming from the #10 positions behind or deeper from midfield, and also Burns & whoever will be on the left, attacking from out wide. We know that Jackson will; be the pacey striker option, but we need to sign a strong, no nonsense goal scoring center forward type who will convert most of the chances that McKenna's team will provide him with. I would love it to be a town supporter like Bonne, but he doesn't fit the bill, for all his ability & love for the club. At best he would be our 3rd or possible 4th striker, and I don't think that would do him or the club any good.

I like MB… he's work-rate is an example to young players especially. Not sure why his shooting boots disappeared in second half of season, but I wish him well if he doesn't return to Town.

My head says he would cost more than others, simply because QPR are probably going to pull our pants down on any deal. My heart says go for it: he's worth less now his goals dried up, and maybe that's a blessing, or even the opportunity he needs to get here, feel stable and settled, and bang in the goals.
Can't help thinking something changed after he had that "outburst" about deciding on his future back in January.

No time for sentiments, we need consistent goalscorers if we are to get out of this league. 1 in every 3 to 4 games isn't good enough. You only have to see that a midfielder was our top goal scorer to see that.....GL though to MB.

Bonne is a confidence player as seen by his early season form. When he was in and out of the team his confidence and form plummeted. Get him back on a permanent so he knows he's an integral part of the team. Fee shouldn't be too outlandish and would be great to have the local lad back home. You know you'll get 100 percent from Bonne every week.

If a deal could be agreed he would be a great asset to the club.
Works very hard for the team and loves the club.

Macauley comes across as a genuinely nice character and I wish him all the luck in the world. Shame it's ultimately not quite worked out here (with his form dipping) but his form earlier in the season was fantastic and that's how I will remember him (i.e. firing in plenty of goals while his confidence was high). The fact he's an Ipswich fan will make the memories even sweeter for him and us. And I'll never forget this either, this was pure class and warmed the heart:

Striker Macauley Bonne has spoken about his celebration following his winner in yesterday’s 2-1 home victory over Shrewsbury at Portman Road and also why he picked the number 18 at Town. 25

Best wishes MB, thanks for the memories and thanks for giving it your all, which can't be said for some loan players we've had down the years!

@Len_Brennan

A very well constructed point of view, I can't really find myself disagreeing with it, the only thing I could say is it's not a strikers job just to score goals and the loss in form equalling a lower price would be a good thing if we were to go for MB.

It is exciting times to even think we can get even stronger players into the squad for next season.

Alas the fairytale didn't work out and our own Town boy hasn't solved our striker problem. I was never convinced by his positional awareness as he would often run into an offside position. He also missed too many sitters for a quality striker.

I wish him success at QPR or another club but regrettably it won't be at Town.

Good luck Macca

Sentiment shouldn't come into this one of our own and all that rubbish. Even taking into account for the goals drying up he didn't contribute much to the team. Lacks pace and an aerial threat which is one of our weaknesses how often do we look like scoring from headers. Im not saying we should sign him but the Charlton centre forward Stockley was very dangerous in the air their only threat mind you. Don't know what went wrong with Pigott he looked disinterested from day one failing to impress Cook, McKenna and Mcgreal.

I cannot see a decision being made on MB until the club has settled on its targets. I would not rule out him coming back unless the strikers we get in cannot accommodate MB's style of play. Having a player who absolutely loves the club and it's supporters is great but if we can do better then that's what we must do.

Monkey_Blue added 18:15 - May 4
Didn't do enough for us to break the bank for him in the last few months but maybe QPR might be happy to take a lot less and he's one of our 4 strikers? Not convinced but shown he can deliver if confident. Worth a small punt as back up.

RobsonWark added 19:18 - May 4
He needs to learn the basic stuff like the offside rule. He also missed so many easy chances when he was right in front of the goal.
