McKenna: Dom's a Great Addition to the Squad
Thursday, 2nd Jun 2022 00:32

Blues boss Kieran McKenna has praised new recruit Dom Ball’s experience, physical attributes, character and professionalism, the former QPR midfielder having signed a two-year deal at Portman Road on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old will become the second free agent to join this summer once his QPR contract is up at the end of the month, striker Freddie Ladapo’s recruitment following his release by Rotherham having been announced on Monday.

McKenna, who previously worked with Ball during his time in Tottenham’s academy, is pleased to have made two additions early in the summer with the squad due back at Playford Road for the start of pre-season training on Monday 20th June.

“Dom has a good level of experience and brings physical attributes to the squad,” McKenna told the club site.

“He has a fantastic character and he will bring a competitive mentality and professionalism to the group as well.

“As a versatile player he is a great addition to the squad. He is also at an age where he really wants to be part of a successful project and play his part.

“In terms of his playing style, he brings a real maturity and understanding to his performances.

“He is a strong player as well, which is particularly important in this division while also being able to win the ball back and distribute it well.

“It's great that we have already brought two players in and we want to prepare the squad early so we have a settled group for pre-season.”

McKenna is so interesting to listen to: every word matters. His emphasis on strength and toughness in both these two signings is telling. And right, quite frankly–we need to be tough to get out of this division.

I can't remember the last time a Town side had some physicality in it . It's going to make for some interesting games this coming season. Just need that end product now and I reckon it'll be party time in May next year - there, I've said it , promotion !

Reading the comments from QPR fans on Twitter was amazing. Not one bad word said about him.

Another player clearly lined up a while back, and seemingly a good player. I understand he can play RB too, seems like good cover for Wes, wonder if this means KVY will move on?

I've heard of him, but know almost nothing about him or how he plays. However, given the sort of player we are now hearing/reading about he is, that is unsurprising. Solid, steady, professional, no nonsense holding midfielders rarely seek or gain the limelight, but are invaluable components to successful teams.
This seems like an excellent signing; an established Championship player, who will bring much needed ball winning presence to an area we badly need to strengthen, who the manager knows & has already worked with, & who is coming in on a free transfer. Ticks many boxes.

We were noticeably smaller and less aggressive than a lot of teams last year and got bullied. Definitely good to have somebody like him either alongside morsy for those particular games or as a much needed replacement for morsy if he is ever out. It's also a very good sign than every qpr fan who has commented on here or the Instagram post seems sad to see him go

ArmieM. Spot on. We havent had the physicality required to get outcof this lge. Something mckenna has clearly realised and is doing something to rectify it. Also players over 6ft. We've been, for far too long, too small a side. Like you, really thinking next season could be the year we at last escape this division.

Pleased with this signing, we do need to be more physical .And KM seems to put a lot of thought into what he does

Another quality striker,a marauding left wing back and hopefully a box to box midfielder, capable of scoring 12 to 15 goals a season, which we haven't had for years and job done.

TimmyH Only time will tell... What exactly? He's 26 years old. How much more time is needed to 'tell'? Or do you suggest we only sign guys in their mid -thirties?

Oliver16, i think Timmys point is, time will tell if he works out! I cant get over excited about any signings anymore because you just dont know how things are going to work! take Will Keane for instance, something like a dozen goals in 9/10 years over a 100 games, then last season happens, how many wigan fans were excited about him when he joined, there is far too much negativity or over the top excitement, i am quietly confident that this is going to be a good season, as Timmy says, "only time will tell"

Spot on Dissboyitfc...I wonder what our 'success rate' has been of signing players over the last 10 years?...fairly poor I would imagine, last summer with all the signings and the hysteria on the site and we didn't find the play-offs. I would say Burns, Morsy, Walton, Edmundson - the rest hit and miss or poor hence why I'm always cautious about signings unless they have a track record of having quality particularly at a higher level.
