Lengthy Ban For Tractor Girls Defender Egan
Monday, 6th Jun 2022 18:29

Tractor Girls defender Lucy Egan has been handed a 162-day suspension having been charged with misconduct by Suffolk FA.

Egan, 21, was dismissed for confronting the referee after the final whistle following the Blues’ 1-0 defeat at Portsmouth in their last game of 2021/22 in May.

A statement from ITFC Women said the ban takes effect immediately effect following an “altercation with the referee” at Pompey.

“With the charge backdated to the date of the offence, Lucy will not be available for Joe Sheehan’s side until 10th October,” it continued. “The club will be making no further comment at this time.”

Shame they don't come down this hard in the men's professional game. Might help with the serious lack of discipline and respect for match officials.

Very harsh as for de'cannio he got a total of 11 game ban 3 for the red card and 8 games for pushing the Ref

If Norwood was moved on partly because he didn't represent the Club's values (as many suspect) it is hard to see what this player is still doing at the Club. This behaviour is way across a red line in football as the ban demonstrates.

Did she push the ref?

If you were at the game you would realise Egan has been stitched up by the referee's report and an over zealous decision by Suffolk FA.
Nothing untoward happened at the end of play other than the player feeling that the ref hadn't given any decisive decisions our way.
The situation is nothing like Norwood and only shows a naïve expression of passion on her behalf.
All true supporters will be behind her in this unjust decision.
As others here and elsewhere have pointed out De Canio and Suarez where treated far less harshly for more serious offences.
Where is the equality??

Thanks Ozzie for that as I was worried about such a lengthy ban and what she had actually done-----in view of what you have said and you were obviously there a statement of support from the club would be nice or are they scared of upsetting the FA?

tAKE CARE lUCY----TIME PASSES QUICKLY AND OCT 10TH WILL SOON BE HERE

This is a slightly odd way of doing things. Most of the suspension covers the close season, so in effect it is a ban for maybe 10 games at the start of next season. I assume it will not prevent her training with the team.

Do we know what she did?,
if she abused then nutted the ref then ban about right, otherwise if this is just for a bit of verbal's sems over the top.
Difficult to comment when not obvious what the offence was

To those saying the punishment is harsh? How do u know? U don't know what she said to the referee. Can only assume she was abusive. When I was refereeing in Sunday morning football I had a player , who I cautioned for dissent. So a £10 fine. Due to the abuse he gave me, I then sent him off, he still abused me. Due to circumstances that occurred over the next 10 mins, and more abuse, u ended up abandoning the match. So instead of a £10 fine, he ended up with a fine of £150 and was banned for a year. So I'd say if she abused the referee, particularly as it was after the final whistle that this ban is probably fair. Ixwould also imagine thr ban is so long bcse of us being in the close season, else it would have simply been a number of matches ban, rather than the spell of time it is. Totally agree that the same should be applied to the mens professional game, and indeed the higher echelons of women's football too.

People, most of the ban runs during the non-playing season! How many matches will she actually miss? Any more than de canio?

Let's get this right.
Are you saying you were at the game and the referee wasn't?
Or are you saying you were the real referee and it was nothing to with the apparent referee?
Or are you saying you just know best anyway because you're you?

Wow, talk about over the top. The authorities need to get a grip. What did she do? Get a hit man to sort the ref out? Utterly OTT whatever she did.

I know nothing of Lucy's offence and some on here seem much more informed. But I revert to Saxonblue's comments, where's this level of punishment in the men's game? Officials receive huge levels of abuse in the mens game and little to nothing gets done about it.

Looking at the Suffolk FA website, it looks like she was charged with misconduct. As regards altercations with the ref, the following are the sanctions, so her offence maybe falls within the second case, namely, physical contact with a referee.

Assault or attempted Assault on a Match Official — standard minimum of 5 years
(2 years minimum if the player is aged 14 or under) or 10 years where the assault causes
a serious injury to the Match Official.

Physical Contact or attempted Physical Contact on a Match Official — standard minimum
of 112 days & £75.

Threatening behaviour towards a Match Official — 56 days & £50.

Such strong sanctions are clearly an attempt to protect referees which is certainly an issue in grassroots football. I believe they also apply to the men's professional game, which perhaps explains why you don't see players these days touching the ref: the rules were obviously much more lax in De Canio's days.
