Baggott Signs New Deal
Thursday, 16th Jun 2022 17:05

Blues centre-half Elkan Baggott has signed a new three-year deal at Portman Road, tying him to Town until the summer of 2025 with the club having an option for a further season.

The 19-year-old, pictured above with chief operating officer Luke Werhun and director of football operations Gary Probert, made his first two League One appearances towards the end of 2021/22, becoming the first Indonesian to play in the EFL.

Baggott has just returned from Kuwait, where he played all three group games as Indonesia reached the finals of the Asian Cup for the first time since 2007. He has now won 10 caps, scoring two goals, the second a cracker in Tuesday's 7-0 hammering of Nepal.

“I’m buzzing to have signed a new contract,” Baggott told the club site. “It’s been a great few days for me and I am delighted to have committed my future to the club.

“I want to thank the gaffer as he has really helped me improve as a player since coming in. I would also like to thank the people around me, and close to me, who always give me support.

“My aim for next season is to play as much football as possible, whether that’s here or if the right loan opportunity comes up.”

Blues boss Kieran McKenna plans to send Baggott out on loan to League Two to gain experience during 2022/23.

Meanwhile, Town are reported to be among the clubs interested in left-back Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill, 26, who is currently with Excelsior in the Netherlands but out of contract along with Reading and Burnley, however, it's understood he's not among those being looked at by the Blues.

That's great news, he deserves it. I is really good to see the town being so proactive in extending the players contracts. A far cry from the past shambles.

The McKenna and Ashton lookalikes leave a bit to be desired.

Excellent news well deserved after what I saw of him last season. Not sure where the ‘we don't give our kids a chance' brigade are? We've given some former youth players and youngsters a contract and now it's there turn to turn the promise and potential into quality. Love how the clubs being run two early signings and players contracts being done early far cry from the likes of leadbitter Norris etc letting their contracts run down for nothing

More good news, interested about the loan, it would mean we are down to one spare CH, Phil Jones from Man U is OOC and wouldn't be the worst place for him to start his badges ????

Great news for Town and Elkan. Talented young player with high potential and an excellent attitude, signed to the right club to progress. Brilliant.

Excellent. Won't be long before the vultures start circling so good to get a signature. Thought he looked perfectly comfortable in the first team.

I think the days of this Club being a pushover ( or having to sell) young players or any player for that matter are a thing of the past. This is the place to be for any player now….which is why we are not hav8ng any problems getting players in or players we want to keep, to sign contract extensions.

Well done Elkan. Re: Ashton and McKenna being absent. One can only assume they are scouting or negotiating elsewhere.

Best news of the day for me. What a cracking deal..! Like a new signing for the club. This guy showed in the couple of appearances at the end of the season that he is the REAL DEAL and can be an immediate first teaser this season. Get rid of Burgess - and our first choice cover CB to mop up in the absence of Wolf, Donacien and Edmundson. Cracking deal.

To everyone saying a loan would leave us with only one spare CB is forgetting Ndaba.

After a successful loan in league 2 he deserves to be above Baggott in terms of being given a chance in and around the squad.

From what I saw last season, Elkan Baggott looked comfortable on the ball and with his height and physique I will be surprised if he is not a regular first team player this coming season.

Brilliant news. Should he stay here or have a season away on loan? Personally I would keep him here so that he can continue his development under the watchful eye of KMcK. He may be young but if good enough then old enough and although his international career to date has been against many lower ranking nations his appearances are valuable experiences.
Regarding the headline photo - what a waste of £50 printing all these numbers on one of our new shirts, unless of course that is his squad number for next season or they have been stuck on with double sided tape

Great prospect. I'd be happy with him as a first-team regular already. But he's only going to get better.
