Monday, 20th Jun 2022 12:13

Cambridge United and Northampton Town will be two of the Blues’ three opponents in Southern Group H of the Papa John’s Trophy during 2022/23, while they will be ball number 15 in the draw for the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The draws for both competitions take place on Thursday after the release of the League One fixtures.

In addition to the Blues, U’s and Cobblers, one of the invited category one academy U21 sides will join the Papa John’s Trophy group, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur or West Ham United.

Town will play two home fixtures, against one of the EFL sides and the U21 team, and one away.

The Carabao Cup draw will be regionalised on a north-south basis with first round ties in the week commencing August 8th.

Barrystedmunds. I get that fans aren't excited by this competition but why they have slag it off every single time it gets mentioned I just can not get at all. Why? If fans dont like it, and don't wanna go to the games, then fine. That's everyone's choice, absolutely. But I guarantee those same fans would want to go to wembley , should we get there. Or if we lose a game in the competition, will be on here slagging off the team or the manager.

What a load of old Cobblers the Papa St Joke Trophy is. Although if we got deep into the tournament then we might as well go for it as I still wouldn't say no to a day out to Wembley!

The PJT is a faff for the so called "bigger" teams in L1, but for the others, L2 and U21 it is a good cup. For us it's a good opitunity to try different players and formation in compettive games without any real consequencis. I for one don't go to the games, but who on here wouldn't rock up at the final if we got there? I know I would!

You guarantee wrong Blues1. I couldn't care less if we go to Wembley - I wouldn't be there. I'm damned if I'm going to bought off by the lure of one day out to see English football destroyed by the Premiersh*t and the big brand clubs. Boycott until those U21 clubs are kicked out!

Maybe the fans moaning about this meaningless competition ( which clubs by and large don't take seriously, so why should the fans ?) are the same fans that can see stupid injuries building from such games ( largely through players having to play 3-4 games in quick succession, with reduced time for recovery ) then missing more important league games that we have to win .

Promotion or “ day out at Wembley for Papa Johns ( who gives a shi t ) cup final? I know what I'd prefer !

blues1, just my opinion. I'm not slagging it off but does anyone ever remember who won the Papa Johns Trophy? Games against Brightons U21's! It's the penance we have to pay for being in this god awful division!😌😌

Papa Johns is no more than a more competitive set of games for the U23's and fringe/injury comeback first teamer's. I see it as useful for that but don't mind if we lose playing youngsters.
