McKenna: Definitely Looking to Make Another Couple of Additions
Saturday, 25th Jun 2022 16:28

Town manager Kieran McKenna says the Blues will definitely be looking to make another couple of additions between now and the end of August and doesn’t rule out a return for former loanee Tyreeq Bakinson.

The Blues have already made four additions, permanent free signings Dom Ball, Freddie Ladapo and Greg Leigh as well as loanee Tyreece John-Jules.

McKenna is pleased to have made those additions relatively early in the window even if the Blues may have to wait for further signings.

“It’s not easy because a lot of clubs want more time to make decisions,” he said. “Especially with a full pre-season at certain clubs this year and tours and things going on, so you have to be patient with some.

“But we knew that we wanted to develop some areas of the squad, add some things to the squad and we are able to do that with the four players that we’ve brought in.

“Three of them coming in have got good league experience and bring a different presence to the squad and a really talented young player Tyreece, who we have been tracking for quite a long time.

“Happy to get those bits done early and it just gives us now a really strong squad already but also gives us the time and then flexibility to wait and take our time on our next few decisions on the next additions we make to the squad.”

Does that mean Town might have to wait a little while to add further recruits? “Timescales are always hard to say, but we’ll definitely be looking to make another couple of additions and there’ll be movement between now and the end of August certainly.

“Timescales aren’t always under our contract, the things that are in our control are trying to get certain players in early that are available, and that’s what we managed to do. After that now we’re less in control of the timescales but we’ve given ourselves plenty of time.”

Earlier, Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson said Town had decided against taking their option to sign loanee Bakinson on a permanent basis, but McKenna says that’s not the case as it stands.

“I think there’s still time on that option that we have, so we’ve not had discussions yet with Tyreeq or with Bristol City as I’m aware of,” he said.

“That’s a position between ourselves and Tyreeq and his representatives. That’s, as far as I know, not a formal position from our club yet. We’ll have those discussions up until the deadline that I believe is in place.”

Asked about any developments regarding keeper Vaclav Hladky’s proposed switch to Aberdeen, McKenna said: “Nothing to update on that. At the moment he’s an important part of the squad, part of a really good goalkeeping unit. Nothing else to update on that at the moment.”

The impression continues to grow of a Manager who has clear vision ,clear plans, and clarity in communication . No cloudy haze left in our mind, only the knowledge of much having been already thought through and now us needing ,and having, the time and window to exercise patience until more is actually possible !
Meanwhile , how good to read of a fruitful pre- season start ; let's hope we see more progress in this manner over the weeks ahead .

I really hope that we are ambitious for the ST and go for Jerry Yates.

Would be perfect for our system and would be our 20 goal a season L1 striker to send us up.
Good age too.

Depends how ambitious the club want to be.

20 goal striker still required ,I'm afraid none of our current lot will get anywhere near it ! Shame we didn't challenge Sheffield Wed for Smith from Rotherham, he would have been a good fit for us.

@Gforce, allegedly Smith is picking up 15k a week at Wednesday, if that's true you can see why he never signed a new contract at Rotherham

Not sure we need a 20 goal striker, we need 4 or 5 players who will each score 12 or so.
We scored nothing from corners, that will surely change.
Pigott made endless very good runs that no-one fed to and I think he might surprise people given the right service.

I think we are well covered for in defensive midfielders. Celina would be the ideal signing six goals and six assists the most creative player at the club not bad for someone who is supposedly not very consistent.

Would like to see a couple of proven, experienced street wise players. One more on the left side and the other a vital fox in the box. We will probably have to dig deep to get them but it must be the investment we must make to challenge at the top of an ever improving league One standard.
It's good we have four signings already but in all honesty I hadn't really heard of any of them before we signed them so do not now what to expect. I don't pay much attention to their stats at previous clubs as Ipswich is a new chapter for them.

We don't need a 20 goal a season striker ??? ….. what a stupid comment. sometimes the comments here beggar belief …. We create the chances but no one sticks the ball in the net … unbelievable !!

I have a feeling that other than being asked for opinion, McKenna has little to do with, or input, to any incoming players … !!!
He uses the words ‘as far as I know' quite often, which indicates not total awareness of what goes on behind the scenes … !!!

Basically I think we just need to sign Celina permanently & that will do us surely we have enough quality in the squad now to get us promoted. If Hladky moves on then we will have to replace him but the squad is looking the best of seen for many of years. Defence looks solid, same as midfield, if Pigott gets enough game time he could surprise a few people!! Think John Jules could ultimately be the man to fire us up this season⚽️⚽️⚽️

Linkboy13 I get what you're saying I'd have him back but I think you'll find Wes was our most creative player last year 12 goals and 6 assists mate

Blueboy1981 course he knows like most managers these days they give a list of players they need to the CEO or director of football to sort finances wages etc out within the budget we have. It annoys me with a minority on here who bash Ashton as the one picking his players no manager would have that as it's their job on the line so come on

I believe Celina is a costly luxury so not bothered if we don't sign him?

Beattie's back pocket Think you'll find Wes Burns is not a midfield man not when i played anyway.

Bakinson? I hope we look for other options, I watched him many of times glimpses of talent the rest was donkey like if he isn't setting the world alight trying to win a permanent contact what's he going to be like on a 2/3 year deal like the BCFC fans warned us!

Linkboy13 well he's not a forward/striker is he? He played in midfield or wing back last season the fact he created 6 goals shows that so not sure when you last saw him play? 👀

Linkboy13 and I quote ‘ Wesley James Burns is a Welsh professional footballer who plays as a winger for Ipswich Town and the Wales national team. He can also play as a wing-back or right-back.'

Desperately need attacking options. Can't see a 20 goal a season striker in that squad.

With all the talk of Celina on here would rather spend the money on a striker and have Chaplin play the no.10 behind 2 strikers

Bazza8564 added 08:30 - Jun 27
Having signed 2 strikers already to add to Pigott and Jackson, and typically playing only one main striker, I can't see us signing another one. I think Ladapo and John-Jule will share the main striker role Jackson and Chaplin will play off one of them and Aluko and Pigott will be back up. I'm told JJ is a really quick lad with great finishing ability so the comment above about him having the fire power to lead us up may well have merit.
Rather than muddle it with more numbers, I'd rather stick with that model until January and see how we go. If a deal is easy for Celina, I'd take him but let's see.
With contracts running off for players on Thursday and our ability to bring players seemingly from nowhere, I wouldn't be surprised that this week might yet see new movement.
And as for the comments about KM not knowing what's going on, I don't buy it, but using phrases like “as far as I know” is just a great way to kill a question stone dead if he doesn't want to get into certain things….

I am surprised and frustrated that we have not spent some money as we must have some with crowds last year and season ticket et sales--------I am sure it is all in hand but I am getting a lttle concerned as the season draws closer
