Portman Road to Go Cashless
Monday, 27th Jun 2022 19:15

Town have announced that Portman Road will be going cashless in the 2022/23 season, starting with the pre-season friendly against West Ham on Tuesday 12 July.

The club say the new system “has been designed to ease queuing and waiting times, while also making the process of purchasing food and drink more hygienic for all involved”.

Payments in cash will still be accepted in Planet Blue and at programme kiosks but the FanZone bar and Beattie’s will be card payment only with a limit of £100.

Cash payments will still be accepted in Planet Blue and at the matchday programme kiosks dotted around the stadium, but the FanZone bar and Beattie’s will operate on card payments only.

Hospitality areas and concourse kiosks will also only accept card payments, but Planet Bluey in the Magnus Group West Stand and the Planet Blue retail unit in FanZone will continue to take cash payments.

“We’re working on a lot and we will have as much as we can in place for the first game of the season,” Stuart Cox, the club’s new director of venue, one of four members of staff recruited from Norwich City this summer, told the club website.

“Part of that includes increasing the number of tills available to supporters. In previous seasons we have had as many as 90 but for 2022/23 we are hoping to have 130 tills operating on a matchday at Portman Road.

“That enables more touch points for fans to access kiosks and again should improve the wait time for supporters.

“Overall, going cashless should make the experience much smoother and efficient for both the Club and, most importantly, the supporters.”

It’s planned that the entire retail operation, including Planet Blue, will be fully cashless from November.

It would still speed up service if only one till was still taking cash. It is crazy how so many people are just so unsympathetic to older people who might struggle with this change.
I personally don't much value in paying over the odds for whatever it is that they sell in the stadium.

I've never been stuck in a supermarket queue when someone's cash is not working, unlike with cards. No retail outlet should be allowed to refuse cash payments.

Sorry, I'm not on-board with this. While I rarely use cash myself, we should remember that Portman Road has a sizeable older demographic that may not be comfortable with this. There's also the wider implication of every business going cashless but that's a much larger issue not for this platform.

My elderly relatives are often unhappy about the prevalence of card only establishments, so I pointed out that they were happy enough to ditch cash when a free bus pass arrived. They don't mind tapping on the bus and spending the council's ££ with those. 🤣

Interesting how some of you are suddenly experts in special needs/mental health issues without even knowing the person's circumstances. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Makes sense for drinks and food, but will be a shame if Planet Blue goes cashless,: pocket money purchases by the little fans won't be the same. Still, times move on yet there is still a significant minority who's livelihoods depend on cash, so it won't go away entirely.

Good move forward, this will defitely speed things up!

I wonder if they'll offer a cash for tokens exchange. Colchester offer something similar for those that have cash. You buy tokens with cash at a kiosk then use that at the food/drink stands.

We need to keep cash. Otherwise we move further towards a digital currency, where the state decides what you can and can't spend your money on. Try not to be so short sighted about the 'benefits' of this decision.

A lot of paranoid people who think that someone is watching them. Spoiler Alert, no one cares about you.

^^^ No one does care. But if you think you are not being surveilled or controlled then you really are ignorant beyond belief

@Spiritofjohn, cashless should help as lots of big festivals are card only to speed up serving large numbers in limited space. Of course, need good staff behind the bar to run it correctly. Regarding the disposal process, not a fan of that but glad we don't have Irish owners, as they may then charge for that too.... 😆

You just knew thus would bring out the 'not too bright'. The reason for slow sewer vice is not enough staff. I have no wish to hand over my purchase history for the day to anyone. If you do, that's your choice, do not force it onto others. My brother-in-law walks as a joiner - pretty much as his work is cash, expected by the clients. 'Cards are for the little folk' he was told last year.

Is ‘little people' code for tax payers?

One of the reasons businesses want to go cashless is that it eradicates the problem of money disappearing. I'm sure the club weren't bothered when someone else was running the outlets but aren't they taking them over now?
However, we shouldn't be quite so dismissive of people's needs, as some are on here. There are still folk without bank accounts and they shouldn't be forgotten. How long will it be before the club say you can only buy a ticket which appears on your smartphone to gain entrance to the ground? That way they get your data. Try to go to Lord's to watch County Cricket and get in on the day with cash...you can't. Only with a digital ticket.
I bet we all know someone who would be left behind when these 'advances' come to pass.

Cash seems to be a dirty word these days. My post was removed from earlier when I suggested tradesmen may be disappointed with this move. Cash is not illegal, not declaring it as part of your income is a different matter entirely! I personally receive my salary directly and have bought into the whole digital era and yes, agree it is far more convenient. I was merely suggesting that those who still like Cash transactions should not be alienated.

I thought being inclusive was one of the values that all businesses should be promoting and embracing in this day and age but as with most things, it's only when it suits them.

And what happens when the ‘Card System' goes down …. ????
If you think it doesn't happen - then you need to start realising what is actually, and currently going on.
The more the ‘system' gets overloaded - the more problems there will be.
Won't be long before the people agreeing with it now, will be complaining !!
Just wait and watch it happen …. !!!

I'm 67 and I have to say I think the "cashless society" is one of the best things to have happened in my lifetime, and a few things have! Filthy germ ridden cash, good riddance. I appreciate not all will agree with those sentiments but time moves on, even for fossils like me!

It's become a Selfish and Controlled World, some Countries much more than others - Britain currently fits both categories extremely well - unfortunately !!
I spend much time in EU Countries, and for weeks now have used nothing but Cash, and always had that option to do so wherever I've been.

I do wonder how some of the moaners would have coped with decimalisation back in the seventies.

The world is going cashless, hastened by covid, it`s cleaner, more secure and convenient.

This move is not for the benefit of customers. Nor is is to be "in the 21st century". So often similar changes are always backed by the claim of giving the customer benefits when in fact they are a complete hindrance, such as card or app only parking. Smart meters are also presented as a customer benefit like self-checkouts at supermarkets but none benefit the consumer. It is about cost cutting for the benefit of the business owner, which is seldom passed on to customer. Whatever happened to "choice" that so many championed in recent years? Have they now changed their views?

Why do this and alienate the older fans? I'm sure most people do pay on card anyway but why not give people the choice? This seems like a silly decision to me
