Former Town midfielder Flynn Downes is reportedly on the verge of a move from Swansea City to Crystal Palace.

Downes, 23, left the Blues for the Swans last summer for a fee of £1.4 million and had a hugely impressive campaign with the Welshmen.

Now, according to BBC Sport, the Essex-born schemer is close to joining Premier League Palace.

No fee is mentioned but earlier in the week reports in Wales put Swansea’s valuation at £11 million to £12 million but with the Championship side ultimately expected to have to accept a lower but still significant figure.

Town look set to receive a windfall from the deal with it appearing likely that a sell-on was included in last summer’s deal, probably around 10 per cent of the Swans’ profit, although the club won’t comment on whether such a clause was put in place.

Palace previously tried to sign Downes in the summer of 2020 when the Blues turned down two bids from the Eagles, the second of £1.6 million.

He made it clear to ipswich for well over a year that he wanted to move and when you have an unhappy player in the camp, you either risk that bad attitude rubbing off on others or move them on. terryf added 20:52 - Jul 2 I think the guy wanted to go even pre Cook.. Good player at times and would have worked well alongside Morsy. He did use to frustrate the hell out of me sometimes though. Takes a free kick on the half way line, decides to play back to Nsiala who then under pressure loses the ball. Downes was often too negative for me. Maybe in McKenna's Team we would have seen a more positive attitude.Anyway history now so good luck to the guy for his future career.

Perhaps they've cottoned on to the fact that Mr Downes is a barely above average player with a distinct attitude problem. The best thing is that he's no longer on our wage billl.

I wasn't bothered when he left, once a player develops the massive ego that he did when his head was turned you may as well give them away. 10% from a sell on clause is a decent result in my opinion. I'm confident that we wouldn't swap him for Dom Ball once we've seen a few games from him.

bringbacktheglory added 23:06 - Jul 2 Blimey, a lot of sour grapes in the comments. Downes was never going to be a world beater but he was too good for league one. Maybe he downed his tools, but he knew he was better as shown by his great season in the championship. He wore his heart in his sleeve, so it would have been difficult to keep those levels when his heart isn't in it. Bad attitude? I don't think so. Ambitious? Yes, however he could have handled it better. What 21 year olds don't make mistakes though? It is also not Cooks fault, we would have got 10 million for him if we weren't in league one!!

Bought him for around £500,000, sold him for £4.5m, despite him being injured half of his time here? And had add ons, so got more when he left Bristol. £1.5 m for downes with his contract running down was a more than fair price. And again, we'll now get more. How swansea rate him at that price I really dont know but good luck to them. Seen him playing for them a few times and frankly all he's done is make short passes sideways and backwards. But if Palace are willing to pay that kind of money for him, good luck with that.

The headless chicken routine was still very much to the fore, attempting and failing to stop far more gifted players from the opposition, and the game merely passing him by. No creativity, no threat, totally uninvolved.Dominic Thompson was evidence that league one players somehow exist in the Premier. Downes cements that belief. Viera....what are you thinking ?!!

Linkboy13 added 10:38 - Jul 3 Lots of sour grapes comments on here about his attitude. His attitude was obviously good at Swansea other wise he would not have got the move to Palace. The value of players is governed by the selling club we are not going to get big money for players playing in league one.
