Bonne: Unfinished Business at Town
Monday, 4th Jul 2022 09:19

Former Blues loanee Macauley Bonne believes he has “unfinished business” with Town, his hometown club who he supported as a boy.

Bonne, 26, spent 2021/22 at Portman Road on loan from QPR, scoring 12 goals, 11 of them by November 2nd.

“I feel I have got so much unfinished business with Ipswich Town,” he told the EADT in a lengthy interview about his time with the Blues.

“It could happen this summer, it could happen in January, it could happen next summer when I become a free agent.”

Bonne says he has had interest from other clubs who want to take him on a loan or a permanent basis this summer.

“They sound like really good football options, but it’s not all about the football side of things,” he reflected.

“I could move miles away from my family and be miserable. I’ve got lots of friends in football who have experienced that.

“It’s a short career, so I have to assess every single option. Those offers are still in play.

“I don’t think I have given QPR a good crack yet. It might still work there for me yet. There’s definitely a buzz about the place right now with [new manager] Michael Beale.

“I guess I’m in no man’s land right now. I’ve just got to be patient and see what happens.”

A Bonne return to Portman Road this summer would be a surprise with manager Kieran McKenna having already signed Freddie Ladapo following his Rotherham exit and with other players, including Leicester's George Hirst, on his list of potential targets.

Meanwhile, Derby County are reportedly weighing-up a move for ex-Blues striker David McGoldrick, 34, a free agent having left Sheffield United at the end of last season.

He could have been through the door already if he hadn't been so poor for the majority of the second half of the season.

I'm sure that we could have signed him by now if we had wanted to.

That we haven't suggests that either KMK doesn't rate him or QPR want too much.

Good player, ITFC fan, only reason we have not signed him (yet) is because we can`t unload Piggot and his contract

I'd more than welcome Bonne, but it is also understandable why we might not want to sign him. I imagine we are still going to be interested in possibly resigning him on loan as well as signing Celina, but both of those depend on who else is available and what those deals would involve.

Didn't have a single decent game for McKenna, i like the lad and would welcome him back, but I just dont see it....... If he struggled in L1 under KM's system, how does he possibly justify investment when we would want championship potential as a minimum for all incoming players?
Sorry I know thats not going to be a popular view but we've already taken 2 CF this summer and he would be behind both. We want quality to challenge Ledapo and JJ not another bench warmer just because he's local....

In December last year I think just about every ITFC fan was calling to sign him permanently in that January window. A change of Manager, System and form followed and he couldn't buy a goal. He did get into some great positions and had numerous chances to add to his tally. On other days he'd have scored them.
I think Bonne has the energy we look for and he certainly has the passion. I'd welcome him back as he gives us “something different” from our other strikers. And with 7 subs allowed during a game, we could do with the depth in our attacking options.

Scored some very good goals but my main memory is that plenty of his chances went unfinished - Cheltenham away !!!
He spent a lot of time offside.
Its a No from me I'm afraid

Sorry but just not consistent enough, which is why he has spent most of his career in the lower leagues.
We definitely still need another experienced striker,
Andre Gray,Shane Long and Vydra are all available, unlikely we could afford them though, even if they were prepared to drop into league one.

Really like Macaulay like a lot of fans but i don't think sentiment shouldn't come into it. Would we be clamouring to sign him if he hadn't got any Ipswich connections. People say he offers something different but don't explain what. McKenna seems to be sticking by Piggott which is bit of a surprise. I think we need to splash the cash on another striker if we are going to get automatic promotion but with Piggott still at the club this is not going to happen i feel.

Not for me...after a great start went AWOL for a good part of the season, had his chance to get back on track over the last few months and didn't do so.

We need another striker badly,as l cant see goals in what we have at the moment, but l dont think Bonne is the answer. He went missing too many months to be prolific. So far we only have Ladapo who can get into double figures. We look woefully short of goals.

Need a 20 goal a season striker to go up. Are they at the club already? Ladapo, Jackson, Piggott? I have serious doubts

Positive vibes. His form had gone before mckenna arrived. He did ehatt he does at pretty much every club he signs for. Starts well, then fades away. A bit like blackburn fans said about Rhodes, great ehen he's scoring goals. When he isnt, brings little else to the team. To be fair, he did work hard in the last few games of last season, but probably bcse he hoping to convince mckenna to bring him back.

Trnc Nothing to do with offloading piggott. He isn't good enough and proved that last season. 1 goal in 31 games doesn't suggest we should be signing him again.

Sorry but not consistent enough so don't want him but i wish him well

In the EADT article on this, him and his partner talk about their struggles having a child and suffering several miscarriages so this could explain his drastic dip in form in the second half of last season. Personal issues do affect work so we should be sympathetic.

Having said all that, I just don't think he would ever recreate that initial goal scoring form if he returned so think we should look elsewhere.

A thoroughly nice guy and I wish him and his missus well.

Some of these comments really are stupid, no MB didn't have a good final half to his loan spell here last season but all strikers go through baron spells and if I recall there was a game in which he did score and was ruled offside even though he was clearly on that could have been the start of another good scoring spell for him but as it was ruled out the poor guy must have been thinking he just can't catch a break and as we all know football is a confidence game and things like that inevitably affect the psyche. A bad patch does not make him a bad player but when luck is against you in any aspect of life its hard, I could indeed be letting my heart rule my head with MB being a Town fan and bringing to the club that something extra special that comes with it but he sure as sh1t isn't as bad as some have made out and as you have guessed I would welcome him playing for us again sooner rather than later, time will tell!!

Can't believe KM would want to sign him. Terrible second half of the season.

If we could unload Pigott I'd take him if the price was right but only as back up.

Don't think our main striker is in the building yet!

Got lucky at the start of the season. His local background helped him settle in, but from I saw of him never going to be the 20 goal a season striker. Piggot has been & despite all the negativity posted he was never given the run in the side Bonne was

Bluearmy71. Some of what u say may be right. But fact is, he does the same wherever he goes. Starts like a house on fire, then fades away. Orient maybe an exception. As for his offside goal. He was offside. I thought active he wasn't btw but after seeing it on video, he clearly was. And the trouble is, he was offside too often. Can get it when in the box trying to get to the cross but too often he was out wide where he could see right across the defensive line, and should never be offside in those situations. And sorry, 1 goal in 31 games isn't a bad patch. It's a drought. Obviously if he was to return I'd get fully behind him, but really hope we don't sign him.

Lots of good comment here.
1) Pigott not the answer and he was given plenty of opportunity. We would have to get him off the books though to sign MB permanently
2) I agree with MB being offside a lot, but surely this is just a technical thing that can be coached by KMc?
3) I hadn't heard about MB's off-field problems, but that must have been an awful time for them and would be bound to affect anyone's performance at work. Footballers are human beings after all, not robots
4) You could never fault MB's hard work and effort, especially being an Ipswich boy. A bit of luck in the 2nd half of the season and he would have been the 20-goal a season striker we need.

Conclusion: Get him in permanently if we can get Pigott off the books (maybe a loan) or on loan from QPR if not
