Downes Set For West Ham Medical
Thursday, 7th Jul 2022 10:27

Flynn Downes is reportedly set to undergo a medical at West Ham today ahead of his move from Swansea, who he joined a year ago, with the Blues set to profit from the deal.

The 23-year-old had looked set to join Crystal Palace but the Hammers, who Brentwood-born Downes supported as a boy, swooped before the Eagles were able to agree a fee with the Swans.

According to reports this morning, Downes, who left the Blues for the Swans for £1.4 million last summer, will move for an initial £9 million with the deal potentially rising to £12 million.

TWTD revealed yesterday that Town included a sell-on clause in last summer’s £1.4 million switch, which may be higher than initially anticipated with the EADT reporting that the Blues will receive 20-25 per cent of the profit the Swans make on the move.

That would see around £1.9 million due to the Blues - although in the manner of most transfers in instalments - with further cash due later along the line when milestone clauses are hit.

Town already have a significant transfer war chest this summer following last year’s takeover and, as reported earlier in the week, have lodged a £1 million bid with Leeds for left-back Leif Davis.

We understand Leicester striker George Hirst, who we revealed in May was among the frontmen interesting the Blues, is now very much a firm target.

The Hammers have held a long-term interest in Downes with TWTD having reported in March 2020 that the East Londoners were keeping tabs on the former England U19 international.

Wow !!
Who knows what was going on at the club when we sold him but an 8 Million, 1 year increase in value is a big brown pat on Cook's slaphead.
Time to look forward, lets hope we can use the money wisely

I know free transfers (Ladapo, Ball etc) aren't free but can we spend some money on a LWB and a FW now please!!?

Excellent news for us and I wish Flynn all the best but I must admit I am astounded at his current value !

I'm delighted for him and shows he was right to leave for the sake of his career. I don't want our best players leaving, but you have to be able to stand back from being a fan and look at it from a players point of view. Also i was not a fan of Cook to put it mildly but he's not to blame for Downes wanting to leave or what fee we got. Downes's value has shot up because he was outstanding in a higher league. Had he stayed here he'd still be looking at another season in league one, not looking at playing in the premiership and Europe and probably earning ten times what we would be paying him.

Great negotiation from Mark Ashton. Again!

Strong talk of Hirst and Davis, which would make great sense and a flurry of exits on loan or sales would complete the picture.

Hopefully going to be a busy couple of weeks...

Surely we can set our sights higher than Hirst ?

Don't know too much about Hirst, anyone out there know if he's good enough to be our much needed 20 goal a season striker and possibly first choice to lead our attack next season ??
Good luck Flynn by the way 👏

Like some others I know nothing about Hurst and am a little underwhelmed but would be delighted to be proven wrong. We still need a good striker(first choice) on the team sheet as i believe we dont currently have that in the squad. Maybe the gaffa is thinking of the big ex Rotherham striker as our new first choice with any of the others as a side partner.

Who knows ?one thing for sure I like many others have a good trust in his judgement.

Nice to see we've got a good see on fee more than what we sold him for Sweet. Good luck FD hopefully you'll do really well in the premiership.

13:players scored more goals in L1 last season. Maybe he is about to blossom into someone more prolific ? He'll probably cost less than £1m so that might end up looking like a great bargain or it might end up looking like a lack of ambition if he doesn't bang in 20 plus goals

Hirst I mean

Well let's hope we can use any additional funds on sone top signings! I think we are 3 top players short of mounting a serious challenge - Additional left wing back, creative midfielder (Celina?) and Striker. With the business Derby and Sheff Wed are doing, I feel without additions we will struggle to keep up!

Blueballs83. Business derby are doing? Really. Signing free transfer, mainly past it players is gonna make them a challenging force is it? Don't see them being a major challenger. Obviously due to still being limited as to who they can sign doesnt leave thrm much choice tho.

Boss man. Who do you think we should be trying to sign then? Kane? Calvert- Lewin? Lukaku? Hirst is a good player and will score goals given the service. No doubt ud take Bonne, yet he scored less than hirst last season. When will fans realise we are in lge1. And we're trying to sign a player from a pl club. But no, we're ipswich, let's just write him off before hes even signed. In fact, in this case, before we've even made a bid for him?

If McKenna is buying another striker maybe Hirst?? Is he gonna play 2 up front then? We have 5 strikers now if you include Simpson. Do like Hirst which suggests maybe we will sell Pigott🤷‍♂️

It's the dream move for Flynn so I hope it works out for him. I didn't see him play for Swansea so I can only comment on his performances for us and there is no way that player is worth 9 million. I would rather have Morsy than Downes and I can't see him getting many games for West Ham.

I'm now worried about the friendly with the Hammers next week because if he plays I can see one of our players being seriously injured by one of his hot headed challenges.

Can anybody explain the Downes situation to me whilst trying to keep a straight face. The poor lad will be chasing shadows all season(as he did in the championship and league1). If we get a sell on fee for this ludicrous price tag then surely it should go towards acquiring the services of Celina. A guy far too good for league 1 who it seems genuinely wants to be at the club !

I hope it works out for Flynn but I'm struggling to see how he will get regular first team football.

With this transfer war chest of money, when are we actually going to spend some of it?

I remain convinced we will sign two, but even more so that we will see the majority of these moved on

Pigott, Simpson (maybe), Harper, El Mizuni, Penney, Vincent-Young.

We must remember that its 5 subs this season and we will only use DF and GK in the case of injury, so having Jackson, Ledapo, J-J and possibly Hirst would make sense, as well as attacking MF options. Ideally, we will be changing 5 of the attacking unit either as impact or to get minutes and experience in, God forbid we should have a decent lead.

Im not sure if Simpson is even training with the main squad and im convinced KM will be looking for incremental improvements above the ability of all those ive listed, he wont just be buying with L1 in mind, and all of those struggled last season

Bazza8564. Agree with most if ur post but don't see why you think we would only use a defender sub due to injury? Pretty sure there'll be a reasonable number of defensive subs during the season.
