Town striker Joe Pigott is reportedly a target of fellow League One side Portsmouth.

According to the Portsmouth News, Pompey have made enquiries regarding the 28-year-old with the former AFC Wimbledon man said to be available on loan with an option to buy.

Pigott joined Town on a free transfer after leaving the Dons last summer but made little impact in his first season with the Blues and it is expected that the Maidstone-born frontman will move on this summer.

Town have already added Freddie Ladapo to their squad during the close season with a bid for Leicester’s former Portsmouth loanee frontman George Hirst understood to have been turned down.

Pigott scored three times in 14 starts and 15 sub appearances in all competitions during 2021/22.

Pompey are also said to be monitoring Accrington Stanley’s Colby Bishop, but face opposition from the MK Dons who reportedly have had a bid turned down.

Meanwhile, QPR manager Mick Beale says former Blues loanee Macauley Bonne wants to stay with the West Londoners, despite recent comments in which he said he has “unfinished business” with Town, his hometown club who he supports.

Bonne made an impressive start to pre-season with Rangers on Saturday, scoring twice in a 3-3 draw with Crawley.

“Me and Macca have had a real honest conversation this summer and I have been really happy with his attitude,” Beale told West London Sport.

“I’ve seen a couple of things from the interview and had a bit of a joke with him about it and with a little look in my eye that wasn’t a joke, if that makes sense.

“He says he was misquoted and that he wants to he here and wants to work. I think you can only show the fans what he showed on Saturday.

“He was chasing things down, scored a fantastic goal on his own and scored another really good goal.

“Since I have been here I can only take people at face value and Macca has not been a problem for me whatsoever. He is telling me he wants to be here.

“You have to remember with the interview it is the city [sic] he is from, it’s his club and he spoke well about them and maybe the journo has elaborated on his words and left out some key words out from the end of the interview where he said he was excited to here and liking working with me and he wants to make a mark at QPR. They were left out of the interview.”

Bonne returning to Portman Road this summer seems unlikely with Town looking elsewhere at the likes of Hirst and with the Chantry-based striker having scored only one of his 12 goals last season after Kieran McKenna took over as manager.

Any player with ambition should play at the highest level possible unless there's better money elsewhere. As for Pigott i think McKenna should take a good look at him in the next two or three friendlies.

Think Hurst is a far better option and feel Town can match the Championship in wages a price but will he drop down to league 1

So r u suggesting that no1 weve signed in the past 2 years has any ambition? Most of them had the chance to play higher, and would undoubtedly have got more money at those higher clubs. I agree that u want players with smhition, but sometimes in order to achieve that ambition you can take a step back, into a project, such as we have here. Think for a player like Hurst, regular football in lge1 would be better for him at this stage of his career, than possibly not being a regular in the championship? Just a thought. Clearly tho depends how he sees things. If money is his main objective, he won't be coming here.

BeattiesBackPocket added 13:00 - Jul 11 I'm not sure how I feel on this. Not done anything to say ‘keep me in the team' but then also strikers need a run of games as well to get scoring. We also need players that fit out style now and I' not sure he does. So many year now we've been getting players in like pitman for example who is used to playing as a two but struggled with being a loan striker. Round pegs in round holes are needed and I feel pretty sure McKenna knows this

reva added 13:04 - Jul 11 Piggott hasn't done it for town last season but it wouldn't surprise me that we have a different player this season - he knows this is his big opportunity - and with our coaching staff who knows what can happen - Jackson has (hopefully) turned it around and with our manager I think we'll see a different player this year.

What he did in a struggling Wimbledon side was exceptional, including being unplayable against us. I'd like to keep him, mix our play a bit and get balls into the box for him instead of him having to come 40yards deep in order to get involved. Surprised ñeither Rotherham or Wigan have shown interest. He'd be fairly prolific in their systems.

IMO he has ,with fairly limited chances done nothing. I would be inclined to sell. We really need to be firing on all cylinders, and get a good start and maintain it , we must break out of this league this season, or i fear we may never do so .

blues1 added 14:40 - Jul 11 Karlosfsndangel sorry to disapooint you,but there's no way we can match championship wages. Remember, we are limited on wages, to 60% of our income. Something championship clubs don't have to adhere to.

Also Piggot himself with pre season under a new manger might bring hos form from two seasons ago we didnt really see enough of him in the league last season imo

Bazza8564 added 15:01 - Jul 11 Sorry but I have a very clear view on this. At the back end of last season McKenna played both Norwood and Bonne ahead of Pigs, and then let them both leave. If he had ANY faith in him, he would have started him ahead. He had his shot, he didnt impress, yes some of that is down to the system, but that is'nt going to change is it! Let the lad move on, buy better and lets wish him success wherever he ends up.

d77sgw added 15:51 - Jul 11 Fairly average when we played AFC in 20/21, I was underwhelmed when we signed him - a lot of his goals the season before were penalties, and I suspected he lacked the mobility we needed (less important at AFC). Reality is that he's not the sort of striker McKenna wants and as Bazza says above that was clear toward the end of the season. He'll do a decent job as a target man for a direct team in League 1 (perfect for the Cowleys!), but he's not what we need to be taking us forward.

Loaning a player who may not suit our system but could bang in 20 goals for a rival and we just save on wages doesn't make sense. Whoever we bring in doesn't come with a goals guarantee… so we shouldn't be doing try before you buy for one of out biggest rivals.
