Pigott Nets Twice For Pompey
Wednesday, 20th Jul 2022 12:40

On-loan Blues striker Joe Pigott got his spell at Portsmouth off to a goalscoring start, netting twice in last night’s 5-2 friendly victory at Leyton Orient.

Pigott, 28, who moved to Pompey on loan for the season at the end of last week, scored in the 18th and 74th minutes of his first appearance for the Hampshire side.

“He's a good player isn't he? He's got really good link and combination skills,” manager Danny Cowley said afterwards.

“If you play into him he's so soft with his first touch and he just has this lovely way that he caresses the ball, and he's a really good finisher.”

It's obvious that he's a good footballer. We've spent years getting nothing out of our strikers. In this case it says more about us than the individual involved. He'll definitely go on to be prolific again. Good luck to him .

Yes , he is a very good footballer , and I can't help but feel we've just handed him free to a promotion rival for the coming season. Really ??

Chepstowblue not saying he is not a good player but 86 goals in 320 appearances many of which are non league or league 2 and nearing 30 is not a great loss …but agree we have struggled with our strikers for years as soon as they have 1 good season they leave

chepstowblue I fully agree with you.
I just don't understand why a lot of strikers just don't do it when we get hold of them.
To name a few……Will Keane, Chris Wood, Nathan Ellington, Aaron McLean, Michael Chopra and to a lesser extent Jason Scotland. Some really good players named there but most of them disappointed in a Town shirt.
I have no doubt Joe Pigott will do well at Pompey.

Strange comment from Crowley , his first touch from us was awful and couldn't trap a bag of wind , probably because we played with a quick snappy pace and there lies his problem IMO.

2 goals in a friendly against a mid table League 2 team and all of a sudden he's world class and we were mistaken for letting him go? I'm not making any comment until he's played a few in the league! If he bangs in 4 in the league in August THEN I might start to have reservations.

Cakeman. Uve definitely named some strikers who struggled but they did so for very good reasons. Wood wasn't fit, just back from a long injurym. Keane was injured much of the time, Ellington was over the hill, McLean too. Scotland was also past his best. Those last 3 would have done well if wed had them a few years earlier i reckon. And after a decent enough start, we all know what happened with Chopra.

Let's be honest most his goals have come against lower leagues and he's scored two against league two opposition so let's not get mega excited over it.
Regarding our success with strikers as some on here are commenting on on most occasions it's because the formation or style of play hasn't suited them and that's down to the managers they should be bringing in strikers who fit THEIR style of football which we have failed to do. I've said I don't think he got a enough chances in our team as strikers need to build relationships with the players around them and a run of games which he never got but when he did play he was off the pace so maybe just doesn't fit our style who knows. I personally see this as a win win because if he does well against our rivals brilliant his price will go up OR the manager may just bring him back in the side if he can get that run going? Who knows but let's not start getting excited just yet he scored in a friendly at a league two club

Cakeman - the answer is - every Successful striker needs playing to their strengths.
We bring them in on the back of an impressive record, and that's where it invariably ends, because we try to lever them into a different system, and change them.
It just does not work at any level of the Game - as we should know by NOW !!
We never seem to learn, or change.
Cowley must be having a laugh … at our expense unfortunately !!
He's no Fool, and knows the Game.

Same old - some will continuously trawl excuses for all and everything Ipswich Town.
That achieves NOTHING, and glosses over failings.
Let's see what we have to Celebrate, or Commiserate in May shall we ??
That's the time for debate, and REALITY !!!

Pigott scores twice against L2 oppo with trialists is a pre season friendly and all of a sudden hes Maradona? Absolute Cr*p.

Had his chance here last season, couldn't cut it, not good enough for our system our manager or our club. I wish Joe well, but for where we are aiming, he hasnt got it. Can you honestly see him at Championship level spearheading a PL push? We need players with the ability to succeed and the potential to make it in leagues above, not score a hat-ful of goals against orients reserves.
The players we've signed this all have potential above L1, as do Burns, Morsy, Wolfenden, Walton etc etc.
Someone start thinking about the bigger picture......

Unfortunately he isn't the type of players KM wants. Let's see what our strikers do this year.

When he was with us he made endless excellent runs and got himself into good positions, the ball never came, we were terrible at crossing, he will score 25 goals for Pompey.

Pigott ot Hurst.

If Town sign Hurst then a striker was going and Pigott would have been the one.

The two Town signed plus Jackson, Pigott was never going to get anymore game time than last year

The town of old would have allowed him to leave on a free.
If he scores a ton of goals this season then next summer town will have a player with value to sell or keep.
The deal smoothed our way to Harness. Who is an excellent player to have.

Strikers thrive on confidence and this will give him plenty going into the new season.

Never a bad player, things just didn't work out for him last season. I wish him well.

19781981twtd …. there's more than a Very Good chance that you will be right.
And no one else to blame but ourselves !!
Much otherwise to prove - let's just hope certain people are making the right decisions, whoever he or they maybe.
