Blues striker Richard Naylor is set to make a surprise return to central defending when Town's reserves take on Spurs at Portman Road on Wednesday night (KO 7pm). Naylor started out as a defender but by the time he progressed into the first team had reverted to the strikeforce.

Manager Joe Royle rates Naylor as a player but doesn't think he scores enough goals: "The lad is as strong as an ox and it's something I'm going to experiment with.

"I've had a long chat with Richard. He's a dedicated professional and I've got a lot of time for him as a player, but I don't think his goal record may be sufficient to suggest that he is right to play striker at this level."

Naylor has played one reserve game since returning from his knee operation. Martijn Reuser is also likely to be involved on Wednesday, in a more customary midfield role.
