Sears Joins Braintree
Monday, 11th Mar 2024 18:41

Ex-Blues striker Freddie Sears has joined National League South Braintree Town.

Sears left his previous club Dagenham & Redbridge last week by mutual consent.

The 34-year-old signed for the Daggers in September following his release by Colchester last summer and scored one goal in 23 appearances while with the National League side.

“Over the moon that Freddie has decided to join us,” manager Angelo Harrop said. “A player I’m very excited to work with.”

One goal in 23 games for Dagenham, sounds familiar.

Do you recall the calamitous summer we lost 40+ goals from the previous season's forwards who had moved on and we were left with poor old Freddie who had scored 2? He was a trier though.

Nah - when we lost Didz and Waghorn. Christ it was poor. A teM of triers. McCarthy could only make a silk purse out of a sows ear for so long. Still, those dark days are behind us now. Love this current team like none other.

The most ineffective players I have ever seen at a professional level.

His next stop will probably be Needham Market.

Bobble, you make a good point. I used to know someone from Braintree. Believe me, if you'd ever have met him you would've thought he had a some kind of brain damage or disease. Either that or you would've thought he was a Norfolk native.

Why do some people need to criticise or abuse ex players? Ok Freddie wasn’t a Mariner, Brazil, Bent or even a McGoldrick but he always gave 100%. If you remember after a reasonably productive first season, McCarthy turned him into a defensive wide left player, not his natural game. Good luck Freddie as you drop down the ladder!

Freddie when we first signed him scored 9 in 21 games, after that downhill

Well I appreciated Freddie’s contribution clearly more than some on here. The season he joined us he was probably in everyone’s starting line up and then he was asked for most of the rest of his career with us to play massively out of position in a winger role.

Good luck Freddie, I hope the game is kind to you in the final years and I wish you well for the future.

Work with a daggers fan. Said he added nothing and didn't track back. Not surprised he has been released.

Should be ripping up the lower divisions even at age 34. Guessing he will retire at the end of the season.

People have short memories McCarthy turned him into a wide player because he hadn't scored in over thirty games and he made a decent job of it. Players always appear better when you look back and Freddie never was an out and out striker at West Ham and his stats back this up. Core that Teddy Bishop was a helluva player though.

I do think it's worth remembering that when Freddie did play up front ( on his own ) it was the hoofball era.

The technique of booting it over his head for a goal kick never worked in his favour, especially when up against four 6' 5" defenders.

Bobble :))) have yourself a great evening.

Bobble and Skip, Braintree is where I was born and grew up ,I have no neural disease or Brain damage. Like Ipswich it's not the town I knew growing up . although I left there many years ago , it wasn't because of rampant brain damage of the residents or as I repeat mine .
