Town Working on Deal to Sign Burnley Keeper
Saturday, 13th Jul 2024 13:39

Town are working on a deal to sign Kosovo international keeper Arijanet Muric from Burnley.

The Blues have been on the lookout for a new number one following the departure of Vaclav Hladky, who left the club earlier this month having been unable to agree terms on a new deal at Portman Road.

TWTD can confirm national reports that the Blues have made a move for the 25-year-old and are currently working on the switch but with the deal not yet done.

According to The Athletic, a fee of £8 million plus £2 million in add-ons has been agreed between the clubs with a medical having been pencilled in.

Swiss-born Muric joined Manchester City’s youth set-up from Zurich-based Grasshoppers in 2015 and while at the Etihad spent spells on loan at NAC Breda, Nottingham Forest, Girona, Willem II and Adana Demirspor in Türkiye.

Having made five Carabao Cup appearances for City, the 6ft 6in tall glovesman joined Burnley on a four-year deal in the summer of 2022 was a member of the Clarets side which won the Championship in 2022/23, a season in which he was named in the PFA Team of the Year.

Last season, Muric made 10 Premier League starts for the Lancashire side - all in the final couple of months of the season - in addition to four games in cup competitions.

Overall, he has made 52 appearances for the Clarets, keeping 21 clean sheets.

A latter-day Paul Cooper or Roy Bailey, Muric has saved eight of 26 penalties over his career, including one from England skipper Harry Kane while in action for Kosovo in a Euros qualifier.

If the deal is confirmed, then Muric will become Town's second Kosovo international following Bersant Celina. The keeper has won 38 full caps, having previously made one U21 appearance for Montenegro.

Portman Road’s keeping ranks could be set for a major overhaul this summer following Hladky’s departure and Muric’s likely signing. Hladky has been linked with Banik Ostrava and Slavia Prague back in his home country.

Christian Walton could potentially move on for first-team football, while Cieran Slicker has said the next stage of his development is a move on loan with Scottish clubs Kilmarnock, Ross County and Partick Thistle all believed to be keen.

The Blues had previously been linked with Brighton’s Carl Rushworth, while Luton’s Thomas Kaminski.

So many experts that know everything about every player in the league giving him thumbs down , If we are looking to sign him i,ll be trusting KM and Ashton,s judgement. All keepers will have a gaff in them at some point ,look back at the likes of David James for one,

Let's be honest. None of us have got a clue what he's like. I can't imagine that anybody on here watched a Burnley game last season !

I saw a few games on SKY when Burnley played live and MOTD (as a number do) and I saw him make mistakes...saying that I witnessed a few decent saves too, but there must be something that McK and Ashton see in him (similar style playing out from the back last season).

Makes me chuckle a number seem to 'know' a Burnley fan or fans tweets/social media content regarding him was great or usually stating he would have kept them up if he joined earlier.

I trust in McK and Ashton as well...doesn't mean they're going to be 100% correct/successful in every transfer they make to Town.

If he was going to keep Burnley up he would have to have scored goals. People come on here claiming to be experts but im sure McKenna and his staff have done their homework. It's obvious Hladky wasn't up to it otherwise they would have offered him a vastly improved contract and saved a few million. Feel for Walton as he's been given the number 2 Jersey without having the chance to prove himself probably means he's on his way.

You don't sign a keeper and a reserve, you sign two first choice keepers to fight for their place. Third can be Walton or Slicker, or have a recall option on them if they've gone on loan.

He looks to be a very good keeper to me. Absolute physical presence in that box. Arms n legs of an octopus, and a type of playful arrogance or a certain assurance about him.

No upgrade. Give Hladky a million and keep him..Pocket the savings. In McKenna and Ashton I trust, but this puzzles me.

I've kept quiet in the past weeks, as I've been very happy with the business and moves we are making, but past few days I've been a wee bit gutted about us not getting Philogene is not my lover over the line. He could have been the dual threat with Omari and would have been an amazing signing. It's a stinger not to get him. Greaves is a great addition, and love the robustness of Delap, in almost a carbon copy of what George Hirst gives us. Muric I have a problem with...I watched far too many painful clips of MOTD where he made bloopers galore alongside that Burnley defence trying to play out from the back. Vaz was sweet with his feet, and I don't know why there wasn't a deal there to be done.

I just think it doesn't bode well. A team coming up from the Championship playing free flowing football and playing it out from the back. Burnley were lauded and then got pummelled and went straight back down. I don't want to be that team. I'd rather avoid Muric that tempt fate. I like his hands, I'm just not sure I like his feet.

I think we're making some great moves to improve the squad, I just am not feeling this one.

Would be a good signing IMO.

For those saying we need 3 GK's- that's not correct. David Martin has already been brought in as a player/coach so one of the spaces is filled. I know Schmeichel has been mentioned a couple of times, but do we need 2 veteran goalkeepers to fill the 3 spaces?

I'd have preferred us to have continued with Hladky. Takes time for any GK to adjust and get to know their fellow players strengths and weaknesses. But not to be!

For those of you who Vaz had your heart in your mouth at times - take a look at his highlights reels your gonna love it when he nutmegs the defender.
He does make some good saves in the reels and his long passes are awesome

I agree with McKenna and his coaching staff who see players at close quarters nearly every day in training Hladky is not a Premier league keeper and the fact we were looking for another keeper long before he made his decision not to sign another contract says it all.

Mariner1974. Youcwatched match of the day ansmd saw clips of countless mistakes he made? He only played the last 10 games lastxseason, and from all accounts improved them greatly, defensively . Think u may jabe been watching Trafford, who did make countless mistakes for them. Which was why Muric got back into the team.

Mariner 1974 they got pummelled because he WASNT in goal go check their stats their best results came from when he came back in the side. The mistakes and poor keeping was form their young future England keeper not him. Check your facts before having a moan and down marking people.

Good GK and shotstopper but can't use his feet (see 2-3 examples of where he cost Burnley points last season). Hopefully he is backup unless we are drastically changing style!

Well he saved a Harry Kane Penalty for Kosovo Vs England and his stats are spot on, I think Nick Pope may also be signed but we see, Mckenna and Ashton know what they doing! Trust the process!

As we apparently can’t agree a deal with Brighton for Rushworth, I assume Muric is one of McK/Ashton’s back up options. He has some PL experience but it wasn’t a great experience for him. Not convinced personally.

Just type in Muric mistakes and watch the clips.

Personally do not see how he will help us in the upcoming season.

Hoping this is a massive bluff.

I notice Hladky hasn't been snapped up - even on a free.

mathiemagic added 07:56 - Jul 15
Hladky did ok for us but he wasnt the best at playing out from the back either it has to be said, this signing hasnt been rubber stamped as yet so I am going to stick with backing McKenna and his recruitment team until they get it wrong.

Reality 2021 every single player could have a highlights real over their career if you just went in and videoed mistakes only. Christ what a moronic comment. Go on the Burnley pages and see their reactions they’d rather keep him over Trafford who made mistake after mistake last season for them

bit of a fathead in that photo , is he fit or does he eat too many pies ?

Beattiesbackpocket this is a discussion forum. My comment is my own.

He is not good enough for the Premiership and that’s my opinion. Kompany clearly didn’t think so either or he wouldn’t have signed Trafford.

Maybe you should think about your posts before slating other people’s comments.
