Blues 'Preparing Move' For Sunderland's Clarke
Tuesday, 23rd Jul 2024 19:38

Town are reported to be ready to make a bid for Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

According to iNews, the Blues are preparing a move for the 23-year-old, who the Black Cats are said to value at around £18 million, although other sources claim £25 million.

We understand there is something in the reported interest with Town looking to add to their left-sided forward ranks this summer, a deal to sign Hull City’s Jaden Philogene having recently fallen through, the former England U21 international instead opting to rejoin his previous club Aston Villa.

York-born Clarke joined the Leeds United academy in 2009 and went on to make his first steps in senior football with the Whites in 2018, going on to make five starts and 20 sub appearances, scoring two goals.

His performances for the West Yorkshiremen led to an £8,500,000 move to Tottenham in July 2019, after Town boss Kieran McKenna had left the North Londoners.

Spells on loan back at Leeds, QPR, Stoke and Sunderland followed before the switch to Wearside was made permanent in July 2022, signing a four-year deal.

Tottenham are reported to have a 40 per cent sell-on from that deal, although we understand the percentage is actually 25 per cent.

Lazio, West Ham United and Southampton have previously been linked with Clarke, who scored 15 times and recorded four assists last season.

Overall for Sunderland, the former England U20 international has made 88 starts and four sub appearances, scoring 26 times.

Bit of a gamble but if anyone can coach this lad and get him to Prem level, McKenna can

A real stand out performer last season, I’d be very happy with this!

Looks as if all the pre- preparedness byMA and KM was totally justified ,but acquisitions are now seemingly difficult to wrap up ,often with others materialising and ‘sellers’ playing a hard game .

Good, exciting player. Wish we were being linked with a central midfielder though.

We're signing strong, but also, they are players who, under McK, will only get better.
I think also there is some future proofing going on as well, so that if we were, not that I think we will, to get relegated, we're in a very strong position to bounce back.

Had a great first half last season but not sure he maintained it in second half when his team generally disappointed.

I said a few weeks ago,he is player we should be going in for.He is by far Sunderland's best player and is a quality finisher.
From what I witnessed last season is also more consistent than Philogene and fir me,the better option.
Really hope we can pull this one off.

Yes please.

Szmodics and or Clarke would be brilliant.

It might be a ploy to force Blackburn to sell if they think we’re looking elsewhere?

Well done Ashton.

He's great on the ball; with touch, control & a finish, so of course he would be a good addition for us.
What I can't really remember of him is tracking back & tackling, something which is a real must in a McKenna team. We saw it with Omari & definitely it was part of the appeal with Philogene, so presumably we are confident that Clarke can bring that side to the table to, if we are serious about signing him.

Sunderland fan I play with was banging on about him all last season, and expecting a prem club to come in- agree shows good intent and hopefully he is tempted under the McKenna plan.

So assuming that would mean it would be one or the other between Clarke and Szmodics?

I think personally I would rather have Szmodics… however I’m definitely not going to complain on this one !!! What a time to be a town fan !!!

Nothing wrong with the choice of player, but 25 million sounds ridiculous.

Great season last year but the Sunderland player I want is Pierre Ekwah

I always feel deals for players with a hefty sell on clause in their current contract are always that much more difficult to do. It always drives the price up significantly, which is wrong really as a player is only worth "what he is worth" and in my opinion, it's simply the selling club's "misfortune" that they have to pass on a percentage of any fee to the predesessor club.

I know this is a simplistic view and football finances don't work like that, but it's just my viewpoint.

Having said all of the above, this is a very exciting link.

Certainly going for Championship players with big potential...maybe Szmodics the odd one out with his age, going to need some coaching but McK is the man to do it if this come off!
