Szmodics Nets Twice Tuesday, 13th Aug 2024 21:55 Town target Sammie Szmodics started and netted twice as Blackburn Rovers thrashed Stockport County 6-1 in their Carabao Cup first round tie at Edgeley Park this evening.
Szmodics, who TWTD revealed the Blues are chasing more than a month ago, was making his first start of the season having missed much of pre-season as discussions continued regarding his proposed move and having come off the bench in Friday’s season opener against Derby, in which he scored one and assisted another.
Despite rumours to the contrary, there appear to be no new developments regarding the deal, the Blues having had a £8 million rising to £10 million turned down earlier this month.
With Rovers having established a 4-0 lead before half-time, Szmodics was replaced in the 63rd minute.
Elsewhere, Anel Ahmedhodžić, who TWTD reported is on Town’s list of potential recruits, was absent from the Sheffield United side which beat Wrexham 4-1 in their first round tie.

Szmodics is not coming to Town……if Town really wanted him they would have increased the offer by now.
tractorfromongar added 22:01 - Aug 13
Not going to happen. Three goals in two games Blackburn will want more and he will be happy hes scoring. Move on now

Phill Ham this is getting boring now mate, we need to move on, Like most of us in reality if Mckenna really wanted him like Hutchinson for example he would be here by now

The price is going up with every game he plays and scores in. We wanted him and have now missed the boat. Could be a big mistake from MA this one.

Clearly not coming here. Shame. Must get signings soon.

In other news, Onil Hernandez who is also not an Ipswich player scores twice for Norwich

Our failure - for whatever reasons - to secure SS transfer will be cited, down the line, as a major failure by MA, should the worst happen. I’m not normally in the “ get him at any price” camp; but on this occasion, I might just be, if it helps keeping us in the PL.

He's not coming....I'm afraid 'in Ma we trust and Km we trust' dropped a right b#llock here....this ship has well and truly sailed. Big big big mistake. Should of just paid what they wanted. His value is going up with every goal he scores....

herfie; Disagree I’m afraid. We as a club have a value that we are prepared to offer. The minute we start being held to ransom and caving in sets a tone that other clubs will try and copy when Town make contact for a player. We clearly want him and his record speaks for itself already but nobody will be pulling the pants down on MA.

Some strange comments here. This is a 29 year old player with zero PL experience. He has a price, but certainly not an unlimited one.

Would Phil still be head lining him if the deal was dead in the water …….Hmmmm ?
PrinceMinky added 22:55 - Aug 13
I - personally - would like to sign him. I rate him highly - ever since he was at Colchester. I noticed we haven’t allocated the number 8 to anybody. I think we are still pushing for a deal. It’s frustrating because these Venkys are awful to do business with.

Playing him in the league cup might make him look less attractive to us but ultimately I assume Blackburn will once again move the goalposts on the price… We have to walk away from this deal. If someone wants to cough up more than £10m then fine, but Blackburns owners are not good faith actors, look at what they did to us with Gallagher. They now have a striker on very high wages who doesn’t score goals because they were greedy.
Monkey_Blue added 23:18 - Aug 13
Whoops, they sold Gallagher to Stoke but for exactly what we offered which still makes my point for me.

All this we need this and we need that, we are lucky we have made it to the prem so quick. We have beaten top European teams in pre-season and although hopeful its going to be very difficult against Liverpool and Man City and we should be glad as Ipswich fans that firstly we are in the Prem and secondly we get to see our team play against the world's top players at Portman Road. Staying up is all that matters this year and enjoy being back. Mckenna and Ashton have done superb and I personally think playing Liverpool and Man City before the window shuts is good because they are 2 top 4 teams and we will gauge where we are at and where we need to strengthen before January. Szmodics has scored 3 but 1 against a very weak newly promoted Derby and 2 against newly promoted to League 1 Stockport so he was hardly up against Van Djjik or John Stones but he would be a good asset if we were God forbid to go back down, we would have a massively strong side. He left 8 and 9 out those two numbers will be filled and more signings will come that is a certainty. So please can we just enjoy that we are in the premiership playing Liverpool at home not Lincoln. I think we have enough to hold our own, I do think Oxelaide Chamberline will come to Town as Ed Sheeran good friends him and his missus Perrie from Little Mix and produced her album so they have a connection. I still the Smodicks will be here but he be here when he is here and I think it is still possible to get Jack Clarke but in the striker position Armado Broja is the one and Trevor Challaboah to come back on a free. That would be a very good squad. Whatever happens let's enjoy it and let Ashton and Mckenna sort the player puzzle and in the meantime get behind the squad and make Portman Road a fortress. Who ever is in the shirts will do us proud like they have been. COYB

I think we will blink and get him, the fact that he played 60 mins tonight will be good when he also notches 2 against Fulham

Reminds me a bit like the Kevin Phillips deal Town missed out on
NorrisHatter added 00:04 - Aug 14
Except he won’t be playing against academy lads like he was at EP tonight. County had about six 17 year olds in the line up. I was at the game and he looked like an averagely good championship player. Sigurdsson much more impressive. Sure SS scored two goals tonight but believe you me as a County fan with the team we put out tonight quite a few NLN strikers would have had a brace. Don’t take tonight as a meaningful further reason Town should buy him.

isn't he out of contract after this season? Good business for Town to wait and pick him up on a free. This is a poker game

No panic necessary. MA and KM will also be considering an alternative or two to Sammie. Maybe the Greek guy. But someone. It’ll go to the wire. We should just accept it’s part of football. BTW am hearing the KP play is more serious than we thought when it first came up….
Steve_ITFC_Sweden added 08:05 - Aug 14
We are quite right not to cave in to excessive demands. SS may be a good bet, but he's not the only kid on the block. Negotiations across the board are clearly difficult, but MA and his team are somewhat more qualified than we supporters to make decision. Let them get on with it, and see where we stand when the window closes
ernie added 08:29 - Aug 14
Great move Ashton, you master negotiator - hold things up enough until the season starts and SS smashes in goals right left and centre and his value goes up. Not getting this one done early will come back to bite us, have no doubts about it.
oldelsworthyfan added 09:24 - Aug 14
Stockport County 'A' Team is hardly Liverpool.
algarvefan added 09:31 - Aug 14
ernie he is not a proven goalscorer, he has had one good season for Blackburn and has scored 3 goals in their first 2 games against a poor Derby team and Stockport county!!! This is hardly Liverpool or Man City. You have no idea how the negotiations have gone and cannot in reality blame Ashton for something you know nothing about. I'm bored with this now like many others, but there are plenty more fish in the sea.
Karlosfandangal added 09:37 - Aug 14
Blackburn need to sell to strengthen the team…….the longer it goes on the less chance Blackburn have to buy players. Town will have more than one target…..if they get someone else Blackburn will be hoping Szmodics can keep them in the Championship again. If not they are league 1 and Szmodics will be gone and the money they get for him will be less and will cover the loss of revenue of relegation
