Town Complete Palmer Signing Monday, 3rd Feb 2025 21:16 Town have completed the signing of West Brom keeper Alex Palmer on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
A £2 million initial fee plus add-ons was agreed between the clubs early today with Palmer travelling to Suffolk to undergo a medical this afternoon.
“It’s an exciting time for me and I am ready to embrace a new challenge,” Palmer, who will wear the number 31 shirt, told TownTV. “I’ve come here with one aim and that’s to help the club.”
The Blues’ goalkeeper situation has been unsettled all season with summer signing Aro Muric putting in inconsistent displays and making way for Christian Walton before Christmas, the former Brighton man then suffering a groin injury at Liverpool just over a week ago.
Kosovo international Muric, who cost the Blues £10 million from Burnley, returned on Saturday but made crucial errors as Town were beaten 2-1 by bottom side Southampton.
Kidderminster-born Palmer, 28, came through the Baggies youth system having joined them aged 14 and spent time on loan at his hometown club, Oldham, Notts County, Plymouth, Lincoln and Luton.
For Albion, the 6ft 3in tall glovesman has made 104 starts, although none in the Premier League, while he won caps with the England U16s as a youngster.
In 2023/24, Palmer jointly won the Championship Golden Glove keeping 18 clean sheets and this season has secured 11 shutouts in 30 league games.
Palmer, who had 18 months on his contract at the Hawthorns, hasn’t played for the Baggies in the FA Cup this season, so could make his debut at Coventry on Saturday.
The keeper’s recruitment is set to be the last Town business of the transfer window, the Blues having brought in Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta, Jaden Philogene on a permanent basis from Aston Villa and Julio Enciso on loan from Brighton in addition to Palmer and 18-year-old left-back Somto Boniface, whose signing for the development squad was confirmed earlier this evening.
As expected, former Blues midfielder Flynn Downes remains a Southampton player.
Elsewhere, ex-Town full-back Kane Vincent-Young has rejoined Colchester United, the side he left to sign for the Blues in August 2019. The 28-year-old was released by Wycombe at the end of last season.
Another former Blue, winger Kyle Edwards, 26, has joined Stevenage from Oxford United.

itfc24, ever heard of PSR? We simply can't spend like Wolves, or even Southampton.

We are building for the championship which seems to be the case from when we got promoted the likes of Jack Clarke, Philogene excellent championship players but physically not up to Premier league. We've relied heavily on Sam Morsy and although he started the season well he's now showing his age and like all good players they tend to get slated more by the fans because the team suffers badly when they lose form. Keiran McKenna has already stated that our recruitment has to be much better and our scouting network more wide spread.

If him and Walton play between now and the end of the season we might stay up…

@Gazelle Great Post thanks I totally agree and we have tge pace and talent to do that and must now imo play our best 11 to do that and I feel experience and the quality we have we can play that way. Palmer in goal, he is an established number 1 who should be able to make step up, 11 clean sheets etc and a better pick than Walton and Muric at present so for me Palmer starts. Back 3 of Tunazabe on right O'Shea as Captain and Greaves on left Wing backs Ben Godfrey on right he is defensive and quick and can rotate with Tunazabe Left is interesting as I think Townsend has the experience and is more defensive than Davis but it will be Davis So those 5 so far can immediately go to a back five or push up In front of defensive id have and think we should have K Phillips as defensive mid to orchestrate defense to midfield and Enciso to orchestrate midfield to forwards on break Then 2 just inside of flanks who have pace and skill Phillogene left and Hutchinson right and with Enciso pushing forward at pace if they pass forward getting the ball to Delap should be constant. My only worry in that line up is Davis as he is great bombing forward but not as quick getting back and if we played as I suggest he wouldn't need to as much but he will be fine as long as he remembers defensive duties. I think that team looks like a good team with experience, pace and guile and the substitutions then are straightforward and like for like. Unfortunately Morsy needs to make way now for remainder of season. Its ridiculous having Phillips and Godfrey on bench and I think that Mckenna may have been a wee bit too sentimental to the league one players who have all had a chance but if we are to stay up we need to play the best players that we spent over 100 million on. Starting 11 Palmer Tunazabe O'Shea C Greaves Godfrey Davis Phillips Enciso Hutchinson Phillogene Delap Subs Muric or Slicker Burgess for defense Johnson for Godfrey Townsend for Davis Cajuste for Phillips Szmocicks for Enciso or Broadhead for Hutchinson J Clarke for Phillogene Hirst for Delap That's our 9 subs That looks like a good match day squad to me Phillips or Cajuste to start and sub who ever starts. So no Morsy, J Taylor, Woolf, Luongo, Walton, Chaplin. That's my team I'd love to see other people's it's a good debate to see who you would drop/start etc Mckenna hopefully Will go that way now.

Hey to you smart asses out there just because we rightly and quite fairly cricise a player who has almost got us relegated on his own that does not make us cluless-----this move should have been made weeks ago and it is sad that it was forced on us in the end.

Why do people on here keep shouting for the inclusion of Phillips he's shown little commitment apart from scoring a goal against Bristol Rovers just because he's got this star image people are star stuck by him. Reputations count for nothing in football desire and commitment does and when he starts showing it i will be the first one to say well done.

This could turn out to be our best and most important signing this season. I said previously that our season will kick on from mid-February. I now think we have a great chance of survival. Bring on Aston Villa. RobsonWark added 22:08 - Jan 19 The past two seasons, the improvements from our January signings haven't kicked in till mid February. So look forward to picking up points from then on till the end of the season.

Hahahahahahaha I'm rolling on the floor laughing....Blues1 you do make me laugh. The rubbish that comes out of your mouth... blues1 added 21:35 - Feb 3 "Timmy H. Typical town fan. Philogene has hardly played and ur slagging him off already. Actually did ok on saturday when he came on, got in a few decent crosses. Not his fault there was no1 in the box to get on the end of them. Give the guy a chance for gods sake." What's the point of putting in decent crosses to an empty box lol? You are so easily pleased. That's like saying Muric did a great dive to his bottom left corner but not his fault the ball went in the top right corner.

LeeJames99 constantly contradicting himself "Muric for a season, he is only 26 and needs to get confidence back it is no different to when a striker doesnt score for ages and fans booing their own keeper and slating hin doesnt help, he was 8 million and I think Mckenna will work with him and we should support hik all the way for as long as he is a town player." and then he says "Midfield is a worry, Morsy is just not good enough IMO" I thought Morsy was a Town player? You don't support all Town players then? Just your very strange obsession with Muric...
RobsonWark added 20:25 - Feb 4
bkues1 you are as big a clown as Muric. Stop talking $hite blues1 added 23:23 - Feb 3 "Bluearmy81. Really. Brightons 1st goal. Dived over the ball." Walton clearly had that ball covered and was making another great save in that game when Leif Davis clipped it under his arms. Davis was to blame for that goal." Get your facts right. How about the save he made from Pedro too? And how brave he was against Pedro only to be bulldozed by him. It's become apparent that you do not watch any games. You only listen to commentary on radio.

The first 25 seconds reminds me of Muric lol

I hadn't seen this until now, what a disaster you are you go on and on too annoying fans on here, I'm not contradicting himself, my opinion is that Town will stick with Muric and give him time and see where we are in Summer and I'm my opinionMorsy was great for League one and Championship but no good for prem. In terms of Phillips nobody is starstruck he is the experienced, level headed, defensive England midfielder sitting on the bench so the captain can play. Have you not tgought that if any clubs ever thought Morsy, Burns, Chaplin etc were good enough for prem they would of tried to buy them. Do you know anything about football at all? It has no place for sentiment, I why can't you just post sensible, thought out posts? Everyone adores Morsy for last couple years, part of clubs history but unfortunately isnt a Prem player of quality, one league too much in my opinion and playing League 1 players is our downfall this season not Muric, he has made many more saves than mistakes walton let in 16 goals 6 games that's ridiculous.
RobsonWark added 19:58 - Feb 5
There you go again LeeJames contradicting yourself. "Have you not tgought that if any clubs ever thought Morsy, Burns, Chaplin etc were good enough for prem they would of tried to buy them." Did anyone try and buy Muric from us (couldn't even give him away)? Why not? Obviously he aint good enough for Prem otherwise they would have tried to buy him or take him from us (more the pity!). Muric is our downfall. You have never watched a match live so stop commenting.
Leejames99 added 21:07 - Feb 5
@robsonwark I go every game lol I'm going to help you... The definition of contradiction deny the truth of (a statement) by asserting the opposite. Where did I say Muric isn't good enough for Premiership? He obviously is as he played for Burnley there and Ipswich and at fault for 10 goals over 2 seasons (7 this season), he was coached by Richard Wright at Man City and is a bosnian International etc I said Morsy, Burns, Chaplin arent good enough for Premier League and League 1/Championship is there level or if they were rated good enough to step up clubs would of bid for them imo. Muric was bought for 8 million, was Championship keeper of season etc and he made many top saves and look at our results aside Man City his first game and West Ham he has kept us in games, all our results were 1-0, 1-1, 0-0. He can't be blamed for the other 40 odd goals, Walton has let 16 goals is 6 games. You and others turned on our own player to demand we put a league 1 keeper in and field Dad's Army while 20 million signings and top loans are subs out of sentiment and thats why we are where we are and now we got Palmer in so you turned on Phillogene who has played half a game and 1 star, it's pathetic in my opinion, ive never seen a home team boo and slate their own player at home. Some fans would rather we back in league 1 with Dad's Army or buying 40 or 50 million pound players, what's most funny is nobody says who should go down instead of us, it's hilarious we got to Prem by a miracle and that had put us in a great position to keep building and establish ourselves but it can take time. It's not 1978 or 1981 where we had Robson & Wark I'm afraid to say Robsonwalk could be jogsontalk-rubbish Mic drop!

Mr contradiction (aka LeeJames) read my post before you comment. Let me try and spell it out for you. This is what you said... I said... "Did anyone try and buy Muric from us (couldn't even give him away)? Why not? Obviously he aint good enough for Prem otherwise they would have tried to buy him or take him from us (more the pity!)." Using your logic Muric (as we all know anyway - apart from you of course) is not good enough for the Prem because as you put it 'no one tried to buy him.' The fact that you can not see that you contradict yourself almost every post that you make, makes you look dumb aswell.
RobsonWark added 21:23 - Feb 5
By the way, Mr contradiction, do you remember that Walton won the GOLDEN GLOVE? Of course you don't because you know nothing and just rely on stats that can be manipulated anyway you want.

I never said pity nobody bought muric you must of copied from somewhere else or if you mean because I said Chaplin, Morsy and Burns didnt get sold to Prem or even a bid thats a fact! And Muric has played in Prem before and we signed him for the prem, and you called me dumb, i would word battle you allday but A your boring B youvwrite pointless posts having a go at people and C this is not what people want to read on here its for opinions and debate in a friendly non abusive respectful manner. Golden Gloves, my Mum has oven gloves but she can't play in goal for Ipswich Town. Enjoy your night! Here's one to occupy your brain - How many number 9's in 100? Answers on a postcard
