McKenna: Matusiwa-Philogene Spat Put to Bed
Thursday, 6th Nov 2025 15:13

Blues boss Kieran McKenna says the on-pitch argument between Azor Matusiwa and Jaden Philogene during the second half of Tuesday’s 1-1 home draw with Watford has been “put to bed” and has praised the start the Dutchman has made to his Town career.

Matusiwa, 27, and Philogene, 23, engaged in a lively exchange of views following a Hornets counter-attack after the former England U21 international had lost the ball and was on the ground complaining that he had been fouled. Other players sought to calm them down with McKenna speaking to the midfielder following the final whistle.

“It’s all put to bed, they’re both fine,” McKenna said. “They’ve both been in, trained well, no problems.

“We spoke about it after the game, we’d much rather see passion and people really showing emotion and passion on the pitch and trying to take responsibility and arguing their case than the opposite of that. But, of course, there’s a boundary there that you don’t want to go across.

“Two players working hard for the team and trying to help us get the result. They’re both fine, both cracked on and trained well today.”

Regarding Matusiwa, who has started every game in the Championship since signing from Rennes in the summer aside from the Charlton match, McKenna says the one-time Ajax trainee has played more than had been planned when he joined the club for £7.8 million in July.

“He’s done well to be available as much as he has,” McKenna said, “I think it’s pretty obvious and it’s been said before, we probably expected him to come in alongside our former skipper [Sam Morsy] and for those two to be able to play together a little bit and be able to introduce Azor, maybe not quite as full-on as he has been.

“But he’s had to come into the team and has played pretty much all the minutes in an absolutely pivotal role in there, and often with other people who are new to the club or to the league. So it’s been a lot of responsibility, but he's stepped up well from that point of view.

“He’s starting to really feel the rhythm of the league now and understand what it’s all about. It is definitely different than any other league in the leagues he’s been in before.

“But in terms of availability, him getting himself out there for the team, consistently doing his best, I think he can be commended for that and we’re going to need plenty from him over the games ahead.”

Interesting that he was viewed as the partner to Morsy and not the replacement!

Why is McKenna continually spending huge fees by Football League standards on players he doesn't consider capable of starting regularly? See also the ridiculously expensive Kasey McAteer.

So a replacement for Mass then. He has had a good start. Excellent. Another success for MA.

He can start that relationship when we resign Morsy in January!

Matasewa should be captain, it might improve O'Shea by taking a task off of him.

Azor is getting better game by game, real pivotal player in the middle of the park.

As for Jaden, shoot me down in flames if you don’t agree. Great dribbler , very skilful and can score goals but I think he has an attitude problem. We were 3-0 down against Charlton and he is sauntering over to take a corner, before Watford the lads are ready and waiting for a team huddle … who strolls over late keeping everyone waiting … Jaden of course wearing his gloves on a very mild evening. I think he probably believes he is better than Ipswich, he played at villa and featured in champions league but let’s be real, he wasn’t good enough that’s why he’s here with us. And then the spat with Azor. Absolutely right, he falls down so easily and rolls about like a premadonna, great player on he’s day but very poor attitude.

AM should be captain, just the sort of passion and commitment we lack at the moment. I wonder if it's just coincidence that the club does very well when we have a captain with at least one of his names beginning with M!

Think McK is being over protective of Billy Jean there, of course I wouldn't have expected him to have said anymore than that but he did suggest earlier in the week that whatever was said between the two should have stayed in the dressing room!!! Then pictures appear to see him ticking off Azor on the pitch after the match. Did anyone see him do the same to Billy Jean on the pitch? . If he was ticking off Azor then it does come across as hypocritical and whilst giving him the benefit of the doubt he perhaps does need to be having a word with his captain ti show a bit more passion otherwise others may decide to take the lead if they think players are not pulling their weight. Who hasn't seen situations where a player has been incensed with one of their team mate, like when they are too greed and could have made a far better opportunity for the team.

This does make me think Morsy might return. They chat regularly...

Morsy cannot return. Whilst I have serious concerns about O’Shea’s captaincy, to bring Morsy back into the dressing room would be a backward step and create division. As for the Philogene spat, I sense that he lacks maturity and despite his goals that the crowd are yet to warm to him. KMcK needs to mentor him and I am sure that he will.

Azor must be skipper for me - only reason I see he isn't is that O'Shea is the longer servant
