Mazionis Returns From Cheltenham and Taylor Could Join Him
Friday, 2nd Jan 2026 10:53

Central defender Jacob Mazionis has returned to the Blues from loan club Cheltenham Town.

The 19-year-old had been on a season-long loan with the Robins but hasn’t featured since September due to a foot injury.

The Lithuania U21 international made eight starts and one sub appearance for the League Two club.

Fellow Blues youngster Tommy Taylor also looks set to leave Cheltenham, despite manager Steve Cotterill having been a fan of the forward.

Cotterill is looking to reduce the number of loan players at Whaddon Road.

“Tommy is a funny one because I love him,” the veteran boss told GloucestershireLive following the 4-1 New Year’s Day defeat at Crewe. “He wasn't on the bench today because I felt I was covered in forward positions.

“With him being one of the loan players and a decision to be made, I need to sit down and have a chat with him. I already have done today, but I want to give him more time than that.

“I think he’s a great kid. I spoke to his agent the other day. We can’t strap ourselves with as many loans as we’ve just had. We might have to.

“The only other time I’ve been at a football club with seven loans was when I was manager of Pompey and we were in administration, so it was the only way I could get a squad together. I might have had eight at one stage.

“We have seven here, so you always have to leave two out and how do you work that? Sometimes you might want somebody more in a position so you have to have that loan, but you have another lad not doing anything.

“Whatever happens with Tommy, he needs to play more football than he’s had in the period of time I’ve had him. I wish Tommy was one of our own. I’d love to work with him over a period of time, but it’s how much football I can give him. He really needs regular football all the time.”

Taylor, 20, has made three starts - one in the league - and 11 sub appearances, scoring once.

I lot of supporters are tough on Walle Egeli - a 19 year old - before criticizing, let's remember that our most promising home grown 19 and 20 year olds can't get much game time in L2 and and Fin Barbrook, a 21 year old, couldn't get on the bench in L1.

Yes but Tractorboy in UK we paid over 15 million for Egeli and just lately hasn't looked any where near that fee.

Understand your point Tractor_Boy_in_HK....but ask yourself how Egeli would get on in League 2?! Suspect he might find it even harder surrounded by even less able players but no less physicality. It can't happen as we are structured and with the players we have acquired, but you want to give them a chance with better players in a system they know. Young players will now have to be exceptional to get a chance....assuming first team is not ravaged by injuries at any time.

Yes we did pay a lot of money for Egeli but the lad is only 19 we have played 8 games in December and he has played a played a lot of minutes for a youngster, in Denmark he would probably only have played 4 games and would now be having a winter break so give the boy a break, there’s some player in there but let’s show the lad we appreciate him and have some patience.

How on earth is Muric relevant to this story. Some people just can’t let some things go.
He’s moved on, probably permanently, doing pretty well, let’s just be pleased for the guy.

virginblue, I suspect some in here have posters of AM and KM ( the player ), on their walls that they throw darts at. Though I bet the ones of Jack Clarke and Jaden Philogene have been mysteriously taken down! Meanwhile AM continues to ejoy himself in the top half of Serie A !

@Linkboy13 Egeli is very young and has undergone a massive culture shock, on the pitch. His age will mean he will be inconsistent and the change in play style will take him time to adjust to too. Philogene and Clarke have the advantage of Leif Davies. Sindre is often isolated, when he receives the ball so has to slow the game down to find someone to link with. I agree that £15m or €15m is a vast sum of money, but we are buying his potential. He's not yet fully grown and he's already a unit with good skill, great pace and a cannon left foot. We need to have patience with the boy, a high price tag rarely guarantees outstanding performances; especially in a player this young.
