IBC Apply For Planning Permission For Portman Road Car Park
Friday, 13th Mar 2026 13:38

Ipswich Borough Council (IBC) has applied for permission to build a new 718-space multi-storey car park in Portman Road.

The plans are part of the wider scheme to build an aquatics centre on the existing car park behind the Cobbold Stand, which also allows the club space to rebuild the stadium’s oldest stand going forward.

The proposed car park development will have spaces for 718 vehicles, among them 36 Blue Badge spaces, 26 dedicated bays for electric vehicles, 14 for motorcycles plus cycle parking. The eight-storey car park itself will house 655 spaces with 63 spaces in an adjacent surface area.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: “This multi-storey car park is a vital first step in delivering the Portman Road Masterplan.

“By approving the revised design and budget, we’re enabling progress on key developments like the new aquatics centre, while ensuring long-stay parking is maintained for residents and visitors.”

Exciting times for the club and for the town - only 26 bays for EVs seems like a bit of an oversight though?

My first thought was not many EV spaces. However, it’s possible for an EV to charge elsewhere, there is no requirement for them to charge whilst parked. It’s convenient but not necessary so why spend the extra money on additional infrastructure?

I always love how when planning permission is applied for, people automatically believe its all going to be built, some might cynically suggest thats the point of such announcements

@USA - EVs definitely should be parked when charging. It's a right faff trying to charge when you're moving...

It says IBC have applied for planning permission, but are they not the ones that will also be approving it?

Well, it had to happen. We've become used to bus parking at PR, might as well go the whole hog :)

Talking of the EV charging bays (if that’s what they are), a Chinese company has designed an overhead rail system that sits above all parking spaces. Charging units can move on the rails to any bay where a driver wants to book a charger. Thus in theory IBC’s 26 chargers could be used to charge cars in any of the 700 spaces. Brilliant idea

When I read about this it reminded me of years ago in the 60’s as a toddler following Mum around the old Sainsbury’s (??) butchers/grocers shop in the town centre. A wire and pulley system with Bakelite boxes loaded with bills, cash and change, whizzed above everything from a cashier to the various counters. I loved it.

Pretty good odds they will get permission from themselves, what a waste of taxpayers money..

For all the comments regarding not many spaces for EVs, EVs do not need to be charged every time they are parked therefore can access any of the spaces, and regarding 36 blue badge spaces, that's about right as i believe car parks have to provide 5% of it's spaces to blue badge. At the end of the day it be good to see more parking available near the ground
