Ashton: We'll Be Better Prepared This Time
Monday, 4th May 2026 16:53

Chairman and CEO Mark Ashton believes Town will be better prepared for the Premier League than they were two years ago.

The Blues confirmed their return to the top flight after one year away with a 3-0 victory over QPR at Portman Road on Saturday with the celebrations continuing today as 30,000 fans lined the streets and filled the park for the traditional - and now quite familiar - open-top bus parade.

In the summer of 2024, Town had won promotion to the Premier League only a year after coming up from League One.

Two years on from then - and two further years under Gamechanger 20 Ltd’s ownership - Ashton says the club is better placed to survive.

“Yes, it is,” he said. “I think we’re more organised, I think the training ground will be open, that’s huge. Commercially, our revenues are up, that makes us more competitive.

“We’ve got a different level of skillsets in the business at Portman Road and at the training ground, but it’s the biggest and best league in the world for a reason and it’s going to be tough. But we’ll be better prepared.”

He says lessons were learnt from the previous season in the top flight: “You learn every day, but there’s no silver bullet to the Premier League.

“But I go back, I think our silver bullet is our consistency, the professionalism of the board to allow myself and the team to run the business, to set the plan and deliver the plan and then push us forward.

“If you look at the way clubs are run across the world, I think that’s quite unique, but it’s fair to say, three promotions in four seasons, the team’s delivered.”

Supporters’ minds will quickly turn towards the summer’s recruitment and Ashton says that’s well under way under head of recruitment Mick Court, who joined the club in September, while more recently Peter Braund has come in as head of European scouting and José Mayorga has been appointed the club’s first ever head of Americas scouting.

“Mick Court and his team have been working,” Ashton added. “You’ll have seen some of the names that have joined the club behind the scenes in the scouting and recruitment department. Everything’s building.

“It’s still going to be tough, I’ll repeat it, but I think we’re in a better place than we were last time.”

It’s understood that Cedric Kipre’s loan from Ligue 2 Stade Reims has already become a permanent switch after the Ivorian international made the requisite number of appearances, while the similar clause in Jens Cajuste’s deal wasn’t triggered.

Asked whether that was correct with Kipre, Ashton added: “Yes, all that will get cleared up and clarified in the next week or so. We have some obligations, we have options.

“Again, I’ve always said, it’s difficult to tell the fanbase everything, but we fairly well protect ourselves in a lot of things we do.

“Regardless of what some people think, there is a plan and it’s just nice now to have seen it all come together.”

Two years ago, the club had to spend millions upgrading Portman Road following 22 years out of the Premier League.

While this summer’s work won’t be as significant, there will still be upgrades to be carried out with the standards changing on a yearly basis.

“There’ll still be multi-millions of pounds to spend on Portman Road,” he said. “It’s incredible considering we’ve been in the Premier League so recently, but as the machine of the Premier League moves on and moves forward, their demands are increased.

“But it’s nowhere near what we had to do last time. The big thing is Playford Road and the training ground will be open in July. The team have done an incredible job, Mark Calver [facilities consultant] and the team have got that on time and on budget, and I can’t wait to get in it.”

Quizzed on whether promotion hastens the rebuild of the Cobbold Stand, a medium to long-term aim, Ashton added: “Over the next couple of months you will see numerous plans coming out for Portman Road and the areas around Portman Road.

“We work really well with the council, they’ve been really supportive. Not only do we want to build a football club, we want to help regenerate this town. We’re passionate about that.

“I’d say watch this space because I think there’ll be more things coming out over the next few months.”

Ipswich Town do NOT need to copy Bournemouth, Brentford and Brighton. They are different clubs, all smaller than Ipswich Town with nowhere near the same size of fanbase.
Criticise all you like and everyone makes mistakes but compare what has happened at Ipswich Town to the likes of Mancheater City, Chelsea and their fairweather fanbase. It is different here and they are building something really unique and special. Even if they do not survive next season in the Premier League, eventual the club will establish itself in its top half. It's a long-term project. Short-term rush decisions to change the management personnel never bear fruit.

All that money. If indeed we are a community club donate a little to the restoration of the Broomhill Lido an architectural gem in our midst and a rare example of the art deco movement - here in little Ipswich. We have lost so much so let us retain one of the few assets that remain Mr Ashton.

@Swoody Why do you assume those who have a different view to you on Ashton are "lefties"? You are happy for the club to be dragged into politics? To risk squad disharmony? To jeopardise commercial revenue? To be lied to?

RIPbobby excellent write-up!
If Ashton learns from his errors, no problem with him, but no one is bigger than ITFC. Be honest.
Development of the Cobbold Stand not necessary until we are an established Prem Team. It will be the Pioneer Stand all over again otherwise.
I expect us to come down again - NOT if we get The Recruitment right though. I just hope the new Recruitment Team are professionally competent. Go abroad. We need to follow Brighton's model without doubt - Ashtons comments seem a bit vague and jumbled here.
Would love to see the Owners scrutinise decision making at ITFC and not give Ashton cart blanche to do what he wants.............

Strange giving such a detailed interview considering (according to some) he won’t be here next season.

"Only this site can produce knob comments after Saturday" - Only Ashton could want to be centre-stage in celebrations so soon after setting off a political incendiary device at the heart of the club.

Anyone else think Mark Ashton looks like hes lost weight, is drawn and hagged looking?

I do wonder what is really going on behind the scenes at the Club now. Ashtin has been notable by his public absence a media muteness, since FarageGate!

Do not, under any circumstances, underestimate our American owners. American businessmen/ businesses pay top $ but do not tolerate fools or incompetence as they see it, and are ruthless operators.

ITFCson, well we know for sure he will be, given the comments he made on another post in here today, I quote, " I was with all the owners at the weekend, and they were very clear to me, give us the plan and we’ll support it.” No gray areas there whatsoever. I'm just looking forward to an intriguing summer and hoping they get it right this time. A Championship team even containing the cream, seldom cuts in the PL, as we know.

@Nederlandsblue, how do you know he angered some players and staff?
What information are you privy too?
The rest of the country seems to have forgotten farages visit and no longer care, yet it seems there are a core number on here who just won’t let it go and continually bleat about it - get over it.
Should be celebrating another promotion and not whining and moaning- should be ashamed!!

Some of the comments on here are frankly pathetic. Let me guess, all members of blue action. The worst fans this club has ever had. At no point did Mark Ashton lie to an̈yone. The original statement put out after the farage visit, wasnt made by him. So how did he lie? How anyone can suggest the apology he made later in the week wasnt genuine, is also ridiculous. Unless ur psychic and could see inside his mind or just pandering to ur own biassed opinions. I challenge any one of you to say you've never made a mistake in your life? No, no1,can say there, unless ur lying. People, say it upset the players, etc? Clearly not, or we wouldnt have been promoted. Bcse ifctheycwere, theres no dountcperformances would have suffered
Clearly they were quite content. Any of youvwho are bringing this bs up agsin, if you dont like it, go support some1 else
Fact is, 99% of all fans couldn't give a toss about the whole episode. Only the morons on here.

I must admit i have never made the mistake of inviting a far right anti immigrant nazi around for dinner, while being in charge of a football club that represents a town a county and all the diversity of the people that goes with that.........but great that the team rose above the unneeded national attention that the political farage farce caused ,and got us back in the first division....

I'm assuming we now have our own top class data programme/base. Should have after all this time. We wouldn't be able to piggy back Tony Bloom's this coming season anyway, and rightly so.

We need to realise it's PL quality we need this time, even as I would expect it doesn't actually come from the PL. We now seem to have a proper scouting network covering a fair bit of the world, so it shouldn't be too difficult, and all the major targets need to be here before the pre season friendlies, otherwise we're going to get the " needing to gel " scenario yet again, and in the PL that's an absolute non starter, didn't work well in the Championship, so heaven knows what it would be like there! Interesting times we live in!

Just curious how many (and who?)loan players do we have out there and how much would they bring in if sold. I suspect that Ashton is a much better businessman than some of you moaners think

After decades of hurt and frustration we have had 3 promotions in 4 seasons yet some people still just love to moan, They probably have a dozen different names on a dozen different sights just moaning all day every day about everything. I say just let their comments go and the true fans and supporters of this wonderful club can enjoy what millions of fans around the country would love to have at their clubs. Great owners, great staff, a great manager and a successful squad.
Sadly success always brings resentfulness, bitterness and jealousy from others.

Things have clearly improved with everything ITFC since Game changer & Ashton arrived.
We've had wobbles, we still are one-dimensional in terms of tactics and only seem to play one half of decent football in every four (at best).....however, the manager has been given all of the tools and financial backing, and he has gotten us promoted 3 times now. I really don't know how we have gone up as the second best team in the division.....but the last two performances were awesome and got us over the line.
I enjoyed a few beers with my sons, celebrating after cheering the boys on!
In terms of recruitment, I do hope we identify and sign the right players. These new scouts must be restricted in terms of talent identified whilst employed by another club and being able to follow that up with new employers. Have they been in place to be of benefit to ITFC in time for our return to the Prem? I really don't want another season that starts in October whilst the new recruits gel and learn each others name.
Well done Town, Ashton, McKenna and the players. Well done Ipswich fans for getting them over the line.
COYB....let's enjoy having gotten promoted again, and look forward to next season.

I love our fans, slaughtering the guy that gave you your club back because your politics dictate it. It's football FFS

Now, recruitment. Clarke, Philogene, Johnson, McAteer, Greaves, O'Shea, Matusiwa, Taylor, Furlong. All brought in during this "disasterous" recruitment period for the club, all yet to reach their peak and all absolute nailed on to be part of the nucleus next season Terrible!

Yes, we had Muric, Ogbone was unlucky to snap his achilles and Szmodics turned into a bad apple, but do we need 15 players now? No.

5 or so, better players, bigger fees, and add those to the departing ones. I don't expect Akpom, Cajuste, Azon, Burns, Baggot, Muric, Humphreys, Chaplin. H Clarke, Button or Szmodics to be here in July. 5 of those are out on loan already, the rest OOC or have (unqualified) obligations and loans that won't be renewed. Somewhere in the region of £200m to spend within PSR, thats a lot of quality, £50m players x4 plus a loan or two is within our reach now. Last time we had £140m to rebuild the whole squad.

It won't be easy, but are we better positioned than 2024? Absolutely. And as for the Ashton out brigade, well i feel for you, i really do. It must be sad to be that short sighted

Nice one Mark. Ashton 100% IN. The emotion coming out of him at the final whistle on Saturday shows how much this club means to him. He made an error, FFS forgive and forget and move on. We've all made mistakes in our lives and told a few porky pies. Get over it. Roll on next season with MA and KMK at the wheel. COYB.
