O'Shea, McAteer and Ogbene in Ireland Squad
Tuesday, 5th May 2026 11:33

Skipper Dara O’Shea, Kasey McAteer and on-loan Blues forward Chieo Ogbene have been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for their friendly against Grenada during a training camp in Murcia on Saturday 16th May (KO 5pm).

Ireland have two more friendlies, Qatar in Dublin on May 28th and a trip to Canada on June 6th, but a separate squad will be selected for those games with no players whose season is still in progress picked for the Grenada.

O’Shea has previously won 43 caps, McAteer eight, netting one international goal, and Ogbene, who was with Sheffield United for the season, 32, scoring four times.

Jack Taylor, who has previously won 11 caps, has been left out of the squad, as has Sammie Szmodics, 12 caps, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Derby, manager Heimir Hallgrímsson explaining at his press conference that it was as they have been struggling with injuries.

Taylor missed the penultimate game of the season at Southampton due to a knee problem but returned for the final-day victory over QPR.

The manager is also not picking players who have games still to play.

There are open spots for these players in later games / camps.

Must be pretty grim to be in a squad for such friendlies at this point of the season. I imagine Taylor is happy not being in so can join some of the others in Vegas or whereever they go.

a pointless friendly a week after the season's finished against the 163rd ranked team in the world. can't imagine DOS is that excited about this!

I presume these pointless friendly games will have all the intensity of a pre season friendly. Just hope no one gets injured!

Had completely forgotten about Ogbene. Is he one for us next season? Can't even remember who he was loaned to.

Steve ITFC Sweden, well if the prerequisite for the PL is Physique, power and pace, Chieo has all 3. There is only one other player at ITFC that I believe has all 3 and he's in that squad too!

Hopefully O'Shea, McAteer, and Taylor (and Ogbene and Szmodics) all get named to the squad for their Canada trip in June because I've got tickets to see that game.

Pretty sure it’s being played in Murcia and not Dublin (warm weather training camp)
