Burns: I'd Love to Stay
Wednesday, 6th May 2026 10:09

Out-of-contract Blues winger Wes Burns says he’d love to stay at Portman Road for next season’s return to the Premier League.

Burns, 31, is one of four players to have won three promotions with Kieran McKenna’s side, alongside Christian Walton, George Hirst and Leif Davis.

The Wales international’s terms with Town are up this summer but he says he would love to continue his time at the club, despite rumours that he may be set for a move to the US this summer.

“Who knows?” told the EADT when asked what his future holds. “It’s the question that everyone wants answers to. I myself have no idea.

“The club will do what it wants to do, whether that’s with me in its plans or me not in the plans. Who knows?

“I’d love to stay. The club’s got a massive place in my heart. There’s one goal that I’ve always had throughout my career. I’ve scored in the Conference, League Two, League One and the Championship, but I never got my goal in the Premier League.

“I’d love to be able to just tick that last little thing off because it’s a little bit of a gripe of mine. I’d love to be able to be given the chance to do so.”

Speaking about Burns’s situation last week, manager Kieran McKenna said he didn't know where things currently stand.

“Honestly, I don’t have a complete update on it,” he said. “And I’m not sure I can reveal anything too much.

“I think Wes has earned the right here over the last few seasons to be the first one to decide his future. I think there were some discussions in January with Wes about his future.

“And he knows how highly we think of him and how important we see him as part of the team and part of the club. I think every party needs to meet on what the right next step is.

“I think in that situation, probably the biggest deciding factor will be what Wes wants for his future and what he wants for his next few years.

“There were some conversations around that in January. I’ve certainly not been party to any conversations I’m sure have been had in the background.

“So that will be up to Wes to discuss with the club. He’s put himself in the history books of the club and I’m sure he wants to have another big day in it tomorrow.

“But I presume, there will be conversations and decisions made over the summer on that.”

Perfect scenario would be for him to sign for a MLS club and be immediately loaned back to us until January just before the MLS season starts. Hopefully he would then have the opportunity to get that goal. He certainly deserves.

As much as I have loved him at the club, he is not a premier league player. Yes we have more that aren’t but it will be about saying goodbye to as many of those as we can and replacing them with players that hopefully are. Interesting times - let’s hope we make a better fist at recruitment this time!!!

If we want to stay up next season, which has to be the target, then the club have to push all sentiment to one side. Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of Wes, he has been great for us but if we want to join the big boys full time like Brighton or Bournemouth have then we have to have a ruthless streak. Buy abroad and loan well and the club now has the infrastructure to become a full time Premier League club, which I think is what we all want.

Whatever happens with Wes I wish him all the very best for the rest of his career. He should rightly put his family first.

I've just agreed with darkhorse. Not sure that is right.
As I write Wes is still our best right winger. Yes Kasey is improving but for me it is still Wes.
Another year if he wants it is a no brainer.

That was a daft thing to do.

This is the time of year when sentiment clouds our judgement. I think the only way Wes is staying is if he's offered a three year contract He's certainly a better option than Acpom. I think possibly Wes would find it difficult to stay fit at Premier league level and at a lower level he wouldn't have to exert himself so much.

He deserves a year as I feel he is a bit more consistent when he plays than McAteer etc. but as we have wasted a squad place on Chuba Akdonkey then unfortunately i fear he will have to be Wes will have to be sacrificed

Please sign him for 1 or 2 more years. I know he's had a few injuries recently but every time he's come back he always looks like he's never missed a game. Burns also offers something different on the right that we may need next season and I would love him to final get his goal in every league

I love Wes, but realistically he's not good enough to help keep us in the EPL.

He was ineffective 2 seasons ago at that level and very hit and miss this season (yes I know he's had injuries). I think he's at his best went he hits the byline and really stretches defences, but the last two seasons our style of play (I'm not sure by design or not) is generally very slow with the pass back/square more often the option taken. The odd time we attack with pace we look very dangerous.... but what do I know?

bringmeaKuqi makes a good point, Ogbene is due back after his loan spell. That will mean we have three right wingers under contract, and if Millwall fail to make it through the play offs I can foresee us going back in for Femi Azeez. So, as much as I love Wes, I can't see us offering him a contract.

Not a time for nostalgia, but I think he’d have a role in the PL on ability and attitude alone. Would be a decent impact sub. All depends on who else is on the right midf. Is Wes / McAteer / Egeli (who’ll be U21) the right combo?

Regardless of whether he stays or goes, the attitude of McKenna is worrying, he talks around it, passing on the decision making to someone else, effectively. He doesn't state he wants Burns to stay, he talks around it rather weakly. Is this a reflection of how much power and influence he actually holds in recruitment and retention?
