Burns Signs New Deal

Winger Wes Burns has signed a new one-year deal, the club has announced.

Burns, 31, the first signing of the Gamechanger era and a key player in all three promotions, has been in talks with the club with his previous deal up at the end of last season.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have extended my stay at the club,” Burns told the club site.

“I am so proud to have represented Ipswich Town for the last five years and to have achieved so much during that time.

“I love everything about the club and the area so to be able to stay and play in the Premier League again is something I am really looking forward to.

“Winning a third promotion last season was really special for the club and the town and also for me personally, after working so hard to get back on the pitch after a long time out through injury.

“After missing so much of our last season in the Premier League, I’m really motivated to compete at the highest level again and help the club take the next step.

“After speaking to [new manager] Gary [O’Neil], I’m excited to get back to work and prepare for the new season alongside my teammates.”

O’Neil added: “Everyone at the club is delighted Wes will be with us next season.

“I know just how important Wes has been to the club over the last five years and, after speaking to him, it’s clear he takes great pride in representing Ipswich Town and our supporters and knows exactly what is required to play for this great club.

“He has real experience and quality and I’m looking forward to working with him as we prepare for the challenge of the Premier League.”

Burns and his teammates return to the club for pre-season training on Monday.

Why are some people (mainly dark horse) crying about this and acting like he’ll be our only signing. You can’t view this in isolation but more as a part of total transfer business done this summer, which hasn’t started yet.
He won’t start many games assuming we sign quality players in the window, but when he is called upon you know he’ll give us something.
Minimal cost as no fee, so nothing really to lose and certainly not a reason to start bashing Ashton before we’ve signed a single player from anywhere else.

I'm hoping we have extended so we can get something if we sell him, otherwise if its for Wes to play a part, its going to be another dismal premiere league season!

jonwillpott added 14:18 - Jul 5 I would suggest that there are several EFL clubs showing interest in signing him and Ipswich would like to get a fee for someone that has been a big servant to the club for many years and not let him go like Morsey and others!!

Sad to say but approaching Mid July 26 - the Championship is looking somewhat of a possibility in May 27 again.
With a Squad weaker than we finished last season with, and without a sign of a ‘new’ player yet, although a MONTH back several signings were ‘a way down the line’ - I can only assume in the adverse direction, which Ashton didn’t state - can anyone see any actual positivity ?
But we have a New Kit !!

I can only assume that many ITFC supporters do not actually watch Prem’ Football - if they did they would be aware of the increasing season upon season massive gulf between the Prem’ and the Championship - and thus be less patient with signing progress thus far.
Unless of course, the step up is assessed as always going to be a step to far for ITFC - these days ?
The gulf is wider this time, as we’ll find out.

Brogan55 added 14:38 - Jul 5 Good news.I think he will enhance our attack.I suggest that O’Neil will have different ideas and he obviously thinks that Burns can be part of it.Last time around we were too much going forward and got caught out.I sense that we will be harder to beat and more effective,thus winning more games.

Monkey Blue. Ashton said deals are down the line. Not well down the line. There's a difference. Why some are panicking I really dont know. Not as if our direct competition have,signed loads of players as yet. And still plenty of time. Reckon there'll be signings in the next couple of weeks. Fans also need to remember, before they start having.g a go at Ashton over signings, that the only part he plays in transfers, are the actual negotiations over the contracts. The rest is done by thecrecruitmwnt team in discussions with the manager. Maybe, as u kind of say, there are some players he wants to sign, other than those who we were talking to before he,arrived. So could have held things up slightly. Sure we'll be ok tho.

I am not suggesting that Mbappe et al are our target players but their clubs are not going to release players that may be needed if one of their stars get injured in the US. The market will sort itself out once that trivial competition is over.

Great news! Aside from the obvious sentiment, when he was on the pitch after his injury towards the end of last season, he was head and shoulders above anyone else on the right wing. He and McAteer should both be up for the Premier League. Ogbene, sorry not his fault due to injury, but he’s done nothing for us, and not exactly set the world alight on loan. Walle Egeli clearly not a right winger. I suspect we’ll see him more as a No 10. Enormous potential, but maybe not getting too many games this season.
