Burns Signs New Deal

Winger Wes Burns has signed a new one-year deal, the club has announced.

Burns, 31, the first signing of the Gamechanger era and a key player in all three promotions, has been in talks with the club with his previous deal up at the end of last season.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have extended my stay at the club,” Burns told the club site.

“I am so proud to have represented Ipswich Town for the last five years and to have achieved so much during that time.

“I love everything about the club and the area so to be able to stay and play in the Premier League again is something I am really looking forward to.

“Winning a third promotion last season was really special for the club and the town and also for me personally, after working so hard to get back on the pitch after a long time out through injury.

“After missing so much of our last season in the Premier League, I’m really motivated to compete at the highest level again and help the club take the next step.

“After speaking to [new manager] Gary [O’Neil], I’m excited to get back to work and prepare for the new season alongside my teammates.”

O’Neil added: “Everyone at the club is delighted Wes will be with us next season.

“I know just how important Wes has been to the club over the last five years and, after speaking to him, it’s clear he takes great pride in representing Ipswich Town and our supporters and knows exactly what is required to play for this great club.

“He has real experience and quality and I’m looking forward to working with him as we prepare for the challenge of the Premier League.”

Burns and his teammates return to the club for pre-season training on Monday.

For me this is a great signing, as I feel that not only does he have a lot to offer the experience will count for a huge amount in the coming months.

Depending on application, players are going on longer at higher levels. There is no doubt that he made a huge difference in the games that I saw, with speed very much still apparent too as well as the guile of experience.

I am worried about the signings, yes, as some of the competition have made a start but these appear to be the clubs expected at the top of the table, not mid to bottom. There is a lot more convincing to do to get a player to come to the premier league and into a potential relegation fight.

I also think that we do have a lot of quality already in the squad which will be able to step up and I do not think that we need as many signings as a number of other posters on here. There is still a way to go and quite possibly a number of targets / signings will not happen till the conclusion of the World Cup. Although I suspect that the scouting team are raking over those now available whose tournament has finished.

So for me, I think we have to remain calm, for now, and see what the future holds which includes a Welsh wonder on the wing.

I do think Wes has something to offer from the bench, he was one of our best players when fit last season, however someone needs to leave in order to get a quality RW in? Hopefully the signings start soon as the likes of Spurs who are rivals are really giving it a go whilst we have been left in the starting blocks. This time recruitment has to be spot on, experienced top players not potentially talented ones need to come in (just as Sunderland did) if we are to stand any chance whatsoever of avoiding relegation, because this squad right now finishes 1 place above bottom at best. There’s time, but not for much longer so hopefully Ashton starts producing results and players Gary O’Neil has an outside chance of survival with.

In this case I agree with you, that he probably won't get a lot in the way of regular football, but he's a guy that's overcome a lot and with him you just never know! At worst he'll be really useful back up and a great guy to still have around the place.

I love it! I still think he's our best right winger, McAteer now knocking on the door more and more, but still Burns imo... I honestly thought it would be the last we'll see of Wes from the last game of the season, because of the massive send off when he was subbed. I hope he can realise his dream of scoring in the Prem, I know pretty much if not all town fans will be hoping for them same. In my opinion he's right up there with Matt Holland in legendary status. To think we paid 10k for him from Fleetwood... bargain of he century!

Delighted with this, and it says a lot about Burns that he chose a 1-year deal with us versus longer-term deals elsewhere. Not that I definitely know they were on the table but I'd be staggered if they weren't, he would be an absolutely top free agent signing for any Championship club. Football careers are short and this is a brave and bold move from him as well as showing how much he loves it at Town. And we love you Wes!

NEWS FLASH EVERYONE; Blueboy1981 has written the season off already.

Very little business has been done by anyone yet (we’re in the middle of a World Cup and history will tell you transfers start after that’s finished).
We haven’t even started pre season training yet.

But Blueboy is saying championship football it is then ALREADY! what an absolute cretin. Moaning for morning’s sake. I hope you’re not like this in real life. Man, what a drag.

I agree with Darkhorse, yes we all love burns and what he gave to the club, he isnt good enough for this league, In order to stay up, we need better quality and not live in sentiment.

we wont even attack the bottom 3 if we keep hold of players who just arent good enough.

I do love Wes, he just doesnt cut it in this league and holding onto players like that will be our downfall

I also love Wes Burns and he has been a great servant to the club, but IMO he's not good enough for the Premier League - he made no impact last time round, and before everyone jumps in and say he was injured - that happened in our 25th game of the season.

Even last season he tended to float through games, without being consistently impactful - too often playing backwards, rather than taking on his man.

I'd love him to make a positive impact on the field next season, but fear if he is playing regularly we're likely to be relegated earlier than last time.

Pessimistic added 23:35 - Jul 5 We have to get rid of the dead wood if we are to survive in the Premier League. Burns thought his number was up v QPR, and so did I! This is a backward step for Ipswich Town and will not help our chances of surviving in the top flight of English football. It is quite frankly a shameful decision that will cost us dearly in the long term, in my humble opinion.

Marinersnose added 11:12 - Jul 6 Burns has earned his contract extension. I’m not sure that he’ll be starting many PL games but he could have an impact from the bench. Many posts have listed our right sided players and I may be controversial but I’m not sure tha t any of them are PL quality particularly if we are looking to stay up. I’m sure a few will be moved on probably at a loss.
