Scowcroft: Town Could Strike Gold With Emersonn
Tuesday, 14th Jul 2026 12:02

Former Blues striker James Scowcroft says Town’s signing of Brazilian frontman Emersonn is a gamble but believes they could strike gold with the 21-year-old, who was brought in from Toulouse for an initial £24 million, a new club record fee, a week ago.

Scowcroft, 50, who has worked as European scout for Crystal Palace for the last seven years, took a look at Emersonn in action for Toulouse, who he had joined from Turkish club Göztepe in January 2025, earlier this year.

“I’ve watched him, I’ve seen him live,” Scowcroft told TWTD. “He’s one who came on the scene in the second half of the season, which they seem to do in French football, players just appear. They haven’t got a TV deal, so they play younger players and Toulouse have always produced good, young players.

“This guy came in, I got tipped off about his data and he has a fantastic profile. The talk would be, he’s a strong runner in behind, he can do all the athleticism.

“The counter-balance of that is his rawness and technically his first touch isn’t great. He’s got the physicality, he’s got the profile, but is he technically good enough? Who knows? Ipswich could strike gold if it all comes off, but it’s a gamble that other people haven’t been willing to take. But that’s where Ipswich are.

“They admitted that when they went up last time that they massively underestimated how physically strong the Premier League is, which it is.

“What I’m worried about this time is that they’re just going to sign athletes, whereas actually you need the technical level as well. It’s very hard to get both because those players aren’t on their list, you’re not going to get technically gifted, physical players because they’re at the top. It’s all about the balance.

“I would say that Ipswich could strike gold with him. He’s got the physical profile. I’m not quite sure he’s got the technical side, he’s got a lot to improve technically.

“A lot of people looked at him and didn’t take the gamble, but it might pay off for Ipswich. We’ll wait and see.”

Reflecting on the role a number nine will need to play at Town in the campaign ahead, Scowcroft added: “In the Premier League, for a centre-forward for Ipswich it’s all about getting you up the pitch. His main job will be to get Ipswich transitioned up the football pitch, hold it up, but also stretching behind, winning a throw-in.

“Liam Delap did that very well but Liam Delap also added goals. That’s what they’ll be looking for, that kind of centre-forward that can occupy.”

Scowcroft says bringing in Gary O’Neil as manager following Kieran McKenna’s departure could prove a wise choice given his previous roles at AFC Bournemouth and Wolves.

“Gary O’Neil is a sensible appointment because he’s been at the level where Ipswich are and he’s had success,” he said.

“He knows the level. He knows what it’s like to be, from the first game in August, in a staying up battle. He knows what it’s like.”

Scowcroft says O’Neil has come from a club which has highly impressive young players.

“Strasbourg have the best youngsters in Europe, collectively as a group the best youngsters,” he continued.

“The problem he’s got is that they’re not cheap. You’re not going to get anyone from Strasbourg who is below £25 million, most of them will be £30 million.”

The former England U21 international says Town would ideally want to get players in quickly so they can be bedded into the squad, but with signings likely to come at a premium at this stage of the transfer window.

“The problem Ipswich have got is that they need to get players in now, but the bargains will come at the end of the window,” he continued. “So it’s a case of how long do you hold your nerve. It’s a difficult conundrum.

“People will take their time before making their decisions and everybody will want a top price now and those prices will drop in the next six weeks.

“You’re trying to build this billion-pound football club but it’s difficult when every window you’re signing seven or eight players. You want to be in a position where you need to sign two players and then you can be more selective, more thoughtful.

“But Ipswich are in a cycle at the moment where every transfer window they need loads of players, which happens when you go up and down.

“They are going to have to spend a lot of money to get to where they want to get to.”

blueoutlook - that’s not Ashtons job. We have whole recruitment team for that and a manager. Obviously Scowie would know more, he’s a professional scout.

If we need players to develop their technical side ( and every club should ), please install at least one Futsal pitch at the club, they'll soon learn. And sensible words from JS, who actually knows something about the player.

I'm not knocking the Emersonn signing but if Scowcroft mentioned that a few have looked and not taken the gamble, it would make you wonder, is it his age? not the profile they needed, not strong enough? curiousity kills the cat

I am told that Elkan Baggott is set to sign for Millwall, I wonder if he's a makeweight in a deal to bring in Femi Azeez.

Anyone claiming they know whether this is a good signing or not is lying or deluded. The people making the decisions at the club couldn’t say 100% how it will turn out as it is a gamble. We just have to hope who we sign turns out well because the players who are nailed on to succeed are not signing for newly promoted or even lower prem clubs. We are in flip of a coin territory. Unless we have developed a recruitment and analysis team that’s better than most prem teams we are going to have to keep our fingers crossed. If anything Omari and Delap were far less risky than signings we are going to make as they were English, brought up in top class academies and we had plenty of sight of them, one via a loan and Delap was playing in the same league for a season.

He’s spot on. The inflated prices now for ‘potential’ look at Brighton spending 50 millions on 19 year old Luka Vuskovic who hasn’t even played one first team game at spurs the markets crazy even for players with potential like some of us have been saying for a few years now. The premier leagues success is what has changed football and not for the better imo there used to be half the team in the league who had a chance of competing near the top before the premier league came along now not so much the big clubs get bigger because th ET have more money. Give me the 80’s and 90’s back any day.

So exoerienced scout scowy is saying we have basically paid well over the odds for a player every club knows about but where not prepared to pay because he has not the technicall skills required for the premier leauge!
Pure and utter gamble unless the coaching team can make him into a goalscorer!

Sounds like another AZON! Hopefully it will pay off

He reminds me of Darwin Nunez and I suspect he might become a bit of a fan favourite but still polarise opinion. He is going to create many opportunities for himself the same as Delap but he is going to miss some sitters. This is thr pond we are fishing in for this season at least

Yeah precisely that! Hoping it pays off for us

Ashton for all your talk and gumph - you and the Club are up against a stone wall as far as suitable signings are concerned.
We are no longer an attraction to such quality players, we were away too long, and missed maybe our only chance with relegation.
McKenna knew when to bail out.
I hope people realise the monumental task G O’N has on his hands with what he currently has at his disposal.
Possibly the most important two weeks ahead for ITFC - for a very long time !!!
Let’s see what comes through the door during that time.
Otherwise, G O’N’s task is to create a silk purse from a pig’s ear !
Not for the faint hearted that.

Long term the main job of our recruitment team will surely be less about scouting for players who’ve (almost) already made it and cost >£30m, and more about unearthing talent we can develop in the Academy then bring into the first team. The top clubs all have such a supply chain of young talent. MA knows this hence the early prioritisation of the tier 1 Academy and strengthening of it with domestic signings from top clubs.

But short term we are where we are and PL survival means we need to pay heavily yet still take risks to acquire the right talent. BTW I hope this includes some experience (a la Sunderland)

The owners know this and I heard a couple of months back that we may spend £200m this summer. Based on the £24m for Emersonn, £200m doesn’t feel excessive. The good news is may still have £175m up our sleeves. But ironically the challenge may not be our budget but persuading players to join us esp where they have alternatives with established clubs.

MA always did say this was a multi year journey. That looks more true than ever

Can't believe Scowy not working for his home town club but then again Palace are a well established Premier league club.
