Town Agree Fee For Volendam Keeper

Town have agreed a fee for Volendam keeper Kayne van Oevelen, according to a report in the Netherlands.

Van Oevelen, 22, was first mentioned in connection with the Blues by local Dutch media a fortnight ago with news that a €3 million (£2.55 million) bid had been turned down emerging this morning.

Now, according to De Telegraaf, a €4 million (£3.4 million) fee plus a 10 per cent sell-on has been accepted. The figure is the highest initial fee the Dutch club has ever received.

The player is yet to agree personal terms - a five-year deal had been provisionally agreed with Valencia but with the La Liga side not having had an offer accepted by Volendam - but this is not expected to be an issue.

The 6ft 6in tall keeper is set to travel to England on Saturday with the deal likely to be concluded in time for him to travel with the squad for the training camp in Spain on Monday.

Van Oevelen has been with Volendam, Arnold Muhren’s hometown club where he began his career, since joining them from Amsterdamsche FC in 2021.

He established himself as the club’s number one in 2024/25 as they won the Eerste Divisie title and then impressed in his first full campaign in the Eredivisie, the top flight of Dutch football, last season, despite his side’s relegation.

Given his lack of experience, Van Oevelen won’t be viewed as a first-choice for the campaign ahead but a back-up to more senior keepers with talks having taken place with Newcastle regarding former Town academy schoolboy Nick Pope, while a loan to a Championship club is also understood to be under consideration.

Nice, definitely one for the future!

Will he be no. 2? What does that mean for Walton and Palmer (i know likely one was gone regardless)?. Would we rather have Walton (more experienced and potentially safer pair of hands, based on age / experience) as number 2?

However if he's good enough (and it sounds like he is) then great! I think we are all bit scarred from Muric....

Good young keeper, with top tier experience, potential significant resale value and being linked with big European clubs, so a good deal if we can get it over the line!

Muric as ever gets a mention when goalkeepers are discussed. All I'll say is this, if this guy or whoever comes in, can replicate the form Muric is showing in Italy, he won't be no 3 for too long.

Its now 5 weeks since Ashton told us the club were a long way down the road on a number of deals. What he forgoy to say was thise seals were for a dizen or so women, a couple of 16yos and a new tea lady. GON inyroduced Emmersonn after that interview and Pope may or may not jave had a medical. Feels like Deja Vue and I can already hear GON saying after 3 ooening defeats leave us bottom that it will take a while for the new players to bed in. McKenna was still quoting thst in February

Is he better than Walton and Palmer atm, I highly doubt it. Unless you are signing Lamine Yamal all these youngsters won't keep us in the PL. Look at Egeli.

armchaircritic59 added 23:07 - Jul 17 ITFCSG, it's not a question of age but talent. If we had 11 teenagers that were good enough, no problem. If we had 11, 35yo's that were good enough, no problem. Not a way I'd want to set a team up, but it's talent that matters.

I think Walton is quite a poor keeper, Palmer I think is better but still not good enough for what we need so let both find themselves a home in the championship while we do a revamp of that position,

BangaloreBlues added 07:59 - Jul 18 I have always rated Walton and believe he is more than capable of being our No 1 in the PL. If he now gets pushed aside because of this I will be pretty annoyed. We made the same error getting Muric in last time around. If it's not broken, don't fix it...

A new goalkeeper, particularly one who is not expected to be first team ready is hardly a priority. All this speculate to accumulate, Brighton method of doing business only works if you remain as a Premier League club.
