Burns Set For Leicester Medical

Blues winger Wes Burns is close to joining League One Leicester City.

Burns was absent from the Town squad which beat Le Havre 1-0 in a friendly at Portman Road last night and, as per the Daily Telegraph TWTD understands Burns is expected to undergo a medical with the Foxes today.

The move comes as something of a surprise with the Wales international, a key man in the three promotions under Kieran McKenna, signed a new one-year deal a month ago today.

If the deal is completed, Burns will become the second legendary figure from the McKenna era to move to the King Power Stadium, Conor Chaplin having made the switch earlier in the summer.

Burns, 31, was the first signing of the Gamechanger era when he came in from Fleetwood in the summer of 2021.

The one-time Bristol City trainee went on to make 132 starts and 32 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring 30 goals, among them some of the most memorable of the last few years.

Meanwhile, striker George Hirst continues to be linked with Stoke City, who are reportedly willing to pay up to £10 million for the Scotland international, who is also understood to be interesting Preston North End.

So Wes moves on, Ogbene made available for transfer. Sindre (CAM / 10) & McAteer (RB/RWB) played very well in different positions last night. So suddenly our 5 RW options are down to just Fatawu & the very raw Tudor Mendal (who played OK in the first half but aint going to be PL ready, probably a L1 loan awaits). Wonder that now we seem to be saving some money this season by Enciso being a loan, if we might go out for another winger. Femi Azeez at Millwall could provide competition / cover for Fatawu.

finidi added 12:46 - Aug 5 Can't believe all these people wallowing in sentiment yes he was a good servent and gave us some good memories but this is a business we got him on a new contract to get a fee simples! He would have struggled in the prem at 31! as a winger.

He's never going to be good enough for the PL and would have hardly got any game time but will be playing every week and with a longer contract at Leicester. A good servant and leaves memories of the wonderful goal from outside the box on the outside of the foot.

Your comments about Wes being better than the new signings are understandable .He has been the most consistent over the years and of course scored that wonder goal against Coventry.
I was surprised when he signed a new contract and even more surprised he could be now leaving.I feel that this could be the right decision as I believe the new players will be as good or even better than Wes.Time will tell.
Thank you Wes,and enjoy your new venture,I am sure you will play more games for Leicester than at Ipswich and no doubt get another promotion medal.

Anyone with any thoughts way that might be? Let's get serious, unfortunately both those boys wouldn't cut it. Sad as it is

Would be gutted to see Wes Burns go but, he's 31 and probably getting a 3 year deal and he's moving to a League One club (albeit a huge club!).

What strikes me is that we are not just trimming the squad but reshaping massively. GON will not feel the same loyalty to players that KMcK did...

I like George Hirst but 10 million is huge money.

I wonder how many existing players are 100% within GON's plans? Leif, Dara, Greaves? Egeli? Nunez? Matusiwa?

I feel as if anyone could go if money is brought in and it facilitates bringing in new players...

As Fatawu will be first choice on the right wing, it makes sense for Wes to move on for more game time and teaming up with Chappers again is perfect. I hope they are both brilliant for Leicester. That said, I'm still sad to see him go. Partly for sentimental reasons, because he has played such a big part in our three promotions and now has legendary status here, but also because I believe he could still be effective in the PL. In my opinion he's currently our second best option on the right wing.

Now is the time to go while he can still offer a Championship side something and we can get a small fee. Neither Wes nor Hirst are going to get much, if any, game time in the PL. But the very best of luck to both of them.

My heart is sad to see him go but my head says this deal suits him and the club best, I wish you all the best Wes and I’m sure you will be an asset to Leicester by linking back up with Conor.

armchaircritic59 added 18:02 - Aug 5 Not a huge surprise to me, I think Wes needs regular football at this stage of his career, it's unlikely he'd have got it here in the coming season. My only surprise at first was dropping down to League One, but I suspect he sees it as a " temporary condition ", just like his " old " mate! Together they should rip up League One. Very best of luck Wes.

Mixed feelings here. The good is that this move gives Wes a sizeable extension to his playing career and opens a slot for us to bring in another new player. But that latter benefit also highlights a risk which most fans seem unconcerned by.

We’ve signed 7 new guys so far (one GK may go on loan but the others will likely be in every match day squad and most will be starters. But judging by GON’s comments we may have 4,5 or even more still to come in. This means we’re approaching a point where only a handful of our regulars last season will even make it into our PL match day squads. I recognise we had to strengthen but should we now think about squad cohesion etc? This is where the loss of a player like Wes could hurt us.
